D. J Gabriel and Alicia Fox danced in the ring before the opening mixed tag match. Their opponents were, of course, the British siblings, Katie Lea & Paul Burchill.

Each month, I issue a report card for TNA. I examine and grade the promotion in all the vital areas. I discuss strengths and weaknesses and chart the ups and downs. The grades in parentheses are for the previous report card. The grades in parentheses represent the previous report card.

Well, what a nice way to begin 2009.

WWE laid off at least 80 office, production and online staff within the last 48 hours as I’m writing this column. At least two people I know (working in the music department and music libraries) escaped the layoffs. Thanks to God for that.

OWW Wrestler of the Week: Mick Foley

Our resident philosopher, Jay Shannon, profiles the Hardcord Legend, Mick Foley. Foley was the shining star among the darkness that was Genesis.

Genesis was touted as the return to action of Mick Foley. In a Pay-per-view plagued with injuries and disappointments, Mick Foley stepped up to really impress the crowd. While I’ve never met Mick Foley, we have had so many near misses. In his first book, he talked about living in Irving, Tx. He lived less than three blocks from me and we never met. He talked about battling Sabu at the Silver Nugget Casino. I was there the night he nearly got lynched by a gang of ticked off card players. Mick Foley is a Hardcore Legend. He’s a multiple time World champ. This week, he’s also the OWW Wrestler of the Week.

TNA Genesis PPV Recap (1/11)

The show opens with comments about the nature of power and its tendency to corrupt those who hold it, cut in with clips from the action leading up to the PPV.

Announcers Mike Tenay and Don West are at ringside to welcome fans amid a display of pyro, and talk about tonight’s card. They announce that Rhino still has not arrived at the building tonight, and Don West says that something doesn’t smell right about the situation.
