Katz Files: What about a Wrestling Superbowl?

The Katz Files – Arnie Katz

What about a Wrestling Super Bowl?

The Kingfish Arnie Katz, now almost recovered from Super Bowl festivities, ponders the possibility of a “big event” for professional wrestling.

The approach of WrestleMania 25, with memories of Superbowl 43 still in mind (and lower tract), got me thinking about whether professional wrestling could stage an event of this magnitude.

The simple answer is: No.

For one thing, wrestling would have to be a whole lot more popular. Thanks largely to gambling, pro football has 50 times as many fans as pro wrestling. Even Bruce Springsteen as the Special Ring Announcer isn’t going to inflate the audience to Superbowl proportions.

The Superbowl also has the entire structure of professional football leading toward it as the culmination of an entire season. If pro wrestling boiled down to one, 19-week tournament and every entrant had the media coverage of Hulk Hogan and there was no champion crowned until the SuperRing, then you might have something that would be one-tenth as popular as the Superbowl – and by far the biggest day in the history of pro wrestling.

Katz Files: My Weekly TNA Notebook

The Katz Files – Arnie Katz

TNA Gone Wild!

The Kingfish Arnie Katz takes deadly analytical aim at the controversial 1/29 episode of iMPACT

Last Thursday night, as is my custom, I tuned the television to Spike Network at a little before 9:00 PST to start the recorder to capture TNA iMPACT. OWW Wrestler of the Week: Shane McMahon

HeadLocker — Jay Shannon

OWW Wrestler of the Week: Shane McMahon

Our resident philosopher, Jay Shannon, honors the first fourth generation wrestling personality in the business. Shane O’Mac returned on Monday to exact revenge for the attack on his father, Vince, by Randy Orton.

The wrestling world is filled with second and third generation wrestling personalities. The Samoans, Von Erichs, Harts, Guerreros and Orton are all presenting third generation family members. Only one family has a fourth (and fifth) generation member, The McMahons. On Monday Night Raw, Shane McMahon returned to the ring to kick the stuffing out of Randy Orton. Orton had attacked Vince McMahon, one week earlier. Shane McMahon is this week’s OWW: Wrestler of the Week.

What in God’s name were they thinking?

WWE had done a great job building up new lead heel Randy Orton over weeks and months, even while he was injured, finally building up 2 weeks ago to an angle where, just as Vince McMahon was going to fire him for disrespecting Stephanie McMahon, Orton attacked Vince McMahon by slapping him in the face, then punted McMahon in the head with a scary stiff looking kick. The angle was great, even if we did have to watch Stephanie McMahon’s melodramatic screeching to EMTs and everyone from the National Guard to Homeland Security to come help her father.
