ROH 7th Anniversary Show fan report
Reported by NDX from OWW Genesis:
Opening contest, Rhett Titus and Kenny King vs. Erick Stevens and Roderick Strong. A solid opener that saw nice pacing a good series of spots. Titus and King are going to do well in ROH in the future as a tag team, but this evening belonged to Chooch and Strong. In the end, Chooch hit’s the Doctor Bomb for the win on the now Addicted to Vicodin Rhett Titus.
Second match saw Claudio Castignoli in a grudge match with Brent Albright. Albright was okay in the match, but Claudio did well. A lot of striking back and forths, especially towards the end, when the match ended in a 15 minute time limit draw. They still fought till refs and students broke them up. Claudio asked for 5 more minutes, Albright accepts, and about 2 minutes into overtime Claudio gets disqualified for a low blow blocking the Half Nelson Driver. Post match saw Claudio hit a Ricola Bomb and walk as the crowd booed.
Match three was the match of the first half. BOBBY DEMPSEY squashed Scrap Iron Adam Pearce with a neakbreaking Death Valley Driver. Dempsey has some nice entrance theme, and the crowd blew up with his entrance and win. A lot of fun. Some guy from NBS was there and got in on the fun. He even ran a spot for his show while we were on line. My fat mug might even be on it. I apologize now if I break any TVs.
Our fourth match was the special attraction match between Mike Quakenbush and Jerry Lynn. Sadly, an uneventful match bordering on boring. Not much memorable happened. I don’t see what anyone sees on Quakenbush. He does unnecessary things that just look unnecessary and impactless. Lynn wins with the Cradle Piledriver much to the delight of my group seeing it end.
The last match before a much needed intermission was the Ultimate Endurance – Revlotion Rules match that was a total waste of my time. Tyler Black was the sole survivor of his team of Necro Butcher and Delirious facing Jimmy Jacobs, Austin Faries -err… Aries, and the all too impressive Brodie Lee. What impressed me most was Brodie Lee. He was huge, but moved very well and new how to hit some very solid big man spots. His boot and version of the Black Hole Slam are very stiff but clean. The first elimination was Delirious. Brainbuster from Aries and he was pinned, this making the next fall Submission. I would say count out, but the first 5 minutes of the match took place outside the ring. Second and third eliminations took place when Brodie and Necro battled all the way out of the arena. Reason for elimination? The left ringside. The never announced how the next fall should be won. So for about 5 minutes Aries and Jacobs beat on Black and then quarel, fight, and Aries gets e liminated by Black by submission after getting knocked out by a superkick. Last fall can not be won by submission, so there goes the End Times, or so we think. Jimmy used the submission trying to choke the life out of Black and then pin him after he was out, but Black came back, hit a Package DDT and won with a small package. The match wasn’t thought out enough and could have just been an elimination tag. Waste of time. Thankfully, intermission. Water time.
We come back from intermission with the Myster Tag Partner match. Bison comes out with Prince Nana in tow, and Nana cuts a killer promo, announcing the much anticipated return of the CROWN JEWEL OF WRESTLING JIMMY RAVE! The Embassy is back in business! AmDrag explodes from the back attacking Bison and Rave, but soon gets beaten down. And who comes to his rescue? GRIZZLY REDWOOD! And then Bison throws him out of the ring the hard way before he even does anything. The lights dim, the smooth voice of Kid Russel blurts out, and some fat Jew name Clot Banana or something comes out and cleans house. This was the second best match of the night. A lot of solid back and forth action. Bison I thought was nothing special. Just big, but hit some nice spots. It was nice to see Rave WRESTLE again. He worked well with the three. Same with Clot. Match saw Colt Cabana roll up Rave for the win.
Next match saw D-Lo Brown work a slow, smart methodical match against Jay Briscoe. ROH should put on more matches like this. It was very good, which showed some good offense and defense from both. D-Lo played the heel after suttley announcing he’s with ROH full time. Should be some nice matches in the future.
Next match was match of the night. American Wolves fail to dethrone Steen and Generico, but they tried their damnedest to do so. Lots of good spots, use of chairs and a ladder. Generico tried a help on Davey Richards on the ladder, but Richards moved and the ladder nearly bent in half. Goooooood match. Right lenght, didn’t go too far, and saw Richards tap to Steen’s Sharpshooter. Post match saw a brutal beatdown on El Steenerico by the American Wolves. I have to say, Eddie Edwards really has impressed me since last August. I want to hate him, but I can’t.
Last match of the night was a good one but could have been better. KENTA worked over Nigel McGunness’s arm that was heavily taped up. At one point, KENTA hit the G2S, but Nigel used the ropes to break the pin. Night revered a G2S attempt into his own G2S on KENTA! Lots of close calls on both sides. Nigel won with his submission London Dungeon after several attempts and heavily working KENTA’s left arm at the end of the match. Surprisingly, Nigel hit not one of his Lariats in the whole match. Good match, but at points felt slow.
All in all, a good time and a good show.
