Wrestler of the Week: Mick Foley

HeadLocker — Jay Shannon
OWW Wrestler of the Week: Mick Foley
Our resident philosopher, Jay Shannon, profiles the new TNA World Champion. Foley defied all the odds to take the gold from Sting,

In pro wrestling, there is a saying: Never say never, brother. That was never more clear than when Mick Foley hoisted his obese frame up and over the top of the cage and dropped to the floor, winning the World title. Foley has beaten the odds his whole career. He’s been a success in wrestling, as well as writing. Mick Foley’s upset win over Sting catapulted Mick to this week’s OWW Wrestler of the Week award.

Reviewing the First Superstars

The Katz Files – Arnie Katz
Reviewing the First Superstars
The Kingfish Arnie Katz tells you all about the first episode of Superstars on WGN and gives the new show a critical examination.

A new wrestling show is rare enough, even in these days of over-exposure, to merit a long first look. Even Celebrity Championship Wrestling was worth at least one episode.

A new show from WWE that features all new matches and draws on the company’s three brands is a major event. Even though the show is only 60 minutes, the fact that it is an original show rather than a compilation makes Superstars very important.

ROH in Montreal (Steen dominates Grenier)

Kevin Steen Dominates Sylvain Grenier
ROH Montreal results 04/17

by Michael “Llakor” Ryan

Kevin Steen led his “Best in the World” Trios team (featuring El Generico and the American Dragon Bryan Danielson) to victory against the team of Sylvain Grenier and the ROH Tag Team Champions, the American Wolves (Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards) in the main eventof the Rong of Honor show in Montreal Friday night. As El Generico prowled the ring, keeping Davey Richards at bay, Kevin Steen trapped Sylvain Grenier in the Sharpshooter while Brian Danielson tortured Eddie Edwards with his trademark Cattle Mutilation chickenwing. While to this observer Edwards and Grenier’s submissions were simultaneous, backstage Sylvain Grenier was lobbying anyone who would listen to convince them that Edwards had tapped first. The victory brought the crowd of about 450 to their feet chanting “Meilleur du Monde!” and sent the crowd home happy.

Lockdown Preview & Predictions

The Katz Files – Arnie Katz
Lockdown: Preview & Predictions
The Kingfish Arnie Katz gets you ready for TNA’s April pay per view event!.

TNA loves gimmick matches, so its annual Lockdown pay per view is a paean to the Queen of the Gimmick Matches, the Cage Match. At Lockdown, they’re all cage matches – and some have additional stipulations, too.

The all-cage-match format is ideal for contests that settle scores and play out rivalries. Sadly, it also offers many opportunities for bookers to bring it home with screwjob finishes and other unsatisfying endings. Which will be the case at this year’s Lockdown?

My Draft Analysis

The Katz Files – Arnie Katz
My Draft Analysis
The Kingfish Arnie Katz delves into the 2009 WWE Draft Lottery and discusses what the changes may mean for the three brands.

The Draft Lottery is done. Now it’s time to put the pieces together and see what it all means.

WE promised a revolution. That didn’t happen, but quite a bit of talent will be working in new surroundings. Thanks to some lazy booking, some of the changes are a little too coincidental, such as the IC and US title-holders switching places and the two Women’s Champions trading. (Of course, all the moves were planned and their was no random luck factor involved, but these kind of coincidences make the Lottery look hokey to the fans.)

Strangely, a lot of wrestlers, including quite a few very important ones, got no mention in the draft. Presumably, they will stay put, unless, of course, WWE decides to supplement the Supplemental Draft with more announcements.

Another small quibble is that it is not ye clear whether WWE will pay much attention to the brands. Big Show was on (4/3) Smackdown and Edge is part of the April RAW European tour. The brands won’t mean much with half the roster crosses over every week.
