Top 2009 Wrestling Announcers
The Kingfish Arnie Katz picks his favorite WWE and TNA announcers for 2009.

The pro wrestling show depends on the skill of the wrestlers, but the announcers can make an ordinary match seem special or kill the heat for one that’s a genuine main event.

It isn’t easy to call matches or contribute meaningful color commentary. You can tell it’s a hard job; just think of all the people who washed out in recent years.

One thing that makes it harder than it might appear is that the booth sends constant stream of instructions during the card. When you hear the play-by-player-caller obsess about some future match while a perfectly good one is actually in progress, you can be pretty sure that someone has nagged him about hyping the one that seems to have him excited.

Top 2009 Female Wrestlers
The Kingfish Arnie Katz picks his favorite WWE and TNA female competitors for 2009.

The role of women in pro wrestling has changed markedly since I first stated watched it as a small boy in the 1950’s. Things have improved behind the scenes, too, and women get a lot more respect than they did back in the day.

American female wrestlers have become much more athletic and skilled in the ring – and they are also a lot better looking, in most cases.

TNA has emphasized in-ring performance since starting the Knockout Division. The WWE Divas are, in general, less accomplished inside the ropes but have more glamour and, sometimes, mic skills.

Top 2009 Rookies
The Kingfish Arnie Katz picks his favorite newcomers for 2009.

Pro wrestling depends on fresh faces and young blood to keep fans’ enthusiasm high. We go to the arenas and buy the pay per views to see the marquee stars in the main event matches, but promotions grow stale and predictable without high-profile rookies.

It is axiomatic in wrestling that this year’s hot rookie may be next year’s fan fest participant. Therefore, it’s entirely possible that five years from now, it’ll be obvious that I overlooked someone who became a megastar and touted someone else who washed out along the way.
