A WORD FROM FORMER EWF WRESTLER, MATT SINISTER

July 3, 2007

After I retired from Wrestling in 2005 due to back and neck injuries I went back to school to get a degree in Criminal Justice. Before receiving my AA, I decided to apply to the Riverside Corrections Academy in October of 2006. I passed the written examination and I had to get ready for the Physical Agility Test. I was training harder then I ever trained in my life, going to the gym sometimes 3 times a day.

Two months into my training, I started to feel a lot of pain in my groin and lower back. I was hoping it would pass but it only got worse. I thought I had a hernia so I went to the doctor in February and after he examined me, he informed me that I did not have a hernia but something was wrong with my left testicle. It was hard as a rock and enlarged. The following week an ultrasound revealed a possible tumor in my left testicle. I went to see a urologist who, at first, put me on antibiotics to make sure it was not just an infection but nothing changed so I had to have surgery on March 22, 2007 to remove my left testicle. The surgery was successful but the tumor turned out to be cancerous.

I then was sent to see an oncologist who scheduled me for CAT Scans, blood tests, and chemotherapy. My urologist had suggested surgery to remove the lymph nods but the oncologist told me that the tests were negative and chemotherapy could wipe out all of the cancer. I was scheduled to start treatment on June 18th and ensured by the staff that, since my insurance didn’t cover a lot that and since I had a low income job that finding funding would not be a problem plus, I was told “We’re not charging you at the door.” Well, funding can take a long time and when we couldn’t find funding right away.

I was then informed a week before I was going to start treatment and one day after my 1 year wedding anniversary, that since funding was not immediately available I would have to pay $882.00 a day for treatment with a grand total of $19,242.00. This was the amount due after my insurance covered their end. I went into shock and I
did not know what to do.

However, my father went to USC where he played football in the late 60’s, winning the national championship in 1967. He still has a lot of friends who have influence at USC medical. I went to see one of the top urologists in the country and he gave me even worse news, that I was misdiagnosed and the original tests were not negative they were positive and not only would I need chemotherapy, I would also have to have the lymph nod surgery followed by more chemo. I’m starting treatment at a county hospital on July 3. New tests will first be done to determine how much treatment I need with either 3 cycles (within 3-4 months time) or as many as 8 cycles (7-8 months time). I then must have the lymph nod surgery and further
chemotherapy.

During this time I have been on medication for depression, anxiety, and pain killers which I’m trying to keep at a minimum because I lost so many friends as well as others in the wrestling business due to abuse. I don’t want to end up that way. I have a beautiful wife and we want to have a family someday and this cancer could prevent that from happening. I did have my sperm frozen but it is still a 50/50 shot that that will work and a 40% chance that the chemo will leave me sterile.

I’m determined to beat this thing. One thing I learned in wrestling was how to stay strong. This is a very treatable cancer but I’m going to have to go through a long process but I’ll never stop fighting, I’ll never TAP OUT.

Thank You all for your support.
