After a hot opener between the Usos and the Wyatts at last night’s Battleground PPV, a great video package played previewing the Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose match.
All of my friends who have the WWE Network pegged this match as the one they wanted to see most, even more than the Fatal Four Way main event between John Cena, Roman Reigns, Kane, and Randy Orton. These friends are hardcore wrestling fans rather than casual fans. They watch Raw just about every week and dig through the archives of the WWE Network. None of my friends who are casual wrestling fans have the WWE Network (or even know about it).
The match didn’t follow the hot opener. Instead, Dean Ambrose attacked Seth Rollins who was doing an interview and they had to be separated. Triple H kicked Dean out of the building.
Soon thereafter, Triple H tweeted out the following:
Who is he speaking to? Is he speaking to the super casual fan who more than likely doesn’t have the WWE Network and surely wouldn’t have bought this lame duck show on PPV? Or is he speaking to the smart wrestling fan who desperately wanted to watch the match between the two. I understand that he’s tweeting in character. But why send out the message to the fans who’ve purchased the WWE Network that this match isn’t happening and it’s actually a good thing?
Seth Rollins came out in the center of the ring to be announced the winner of the match. I think most people expected Stone Cold Dean Ambrose to heroically show up to start a match that people were dying to see. Well, he showed up, but only after Rollins was announced as the winner.
They had a helluva pull apart brawl. It started and stopped several times. Jamie Noble and Fit Finlay were involved. And both men couldn’t wait to get a piece of each other.
If you’re booking long term, it’s not a bad move. You whet the appetite to make the match feel even more important at the next PPV. But it becomes a double edged sword. While the match feels bigger by not having the match, you just bait and switched on your very loyal audience who pays $10 a month to watch your product. And you didn’t bait and switch Paige vs AJ or Naomi vs Cameron. You bait and switched the single most important match to that fanbase. It felt slimy.
