In a follow-up to last week’s story, now labor unions are getting into the act. The Culinary Union, who has spearheaded the efforts to keep UFC and MMA shows from taking place in the state of New York, owing to a fight with the non-union casino owned by the Fertittas in Nevada, were now at the last minute (much like the attempt to keep “children” out of Saturday’s fight card) trying to get the main event of the August 17th event pulled by attempting to keep Chael Sonnen from fighting Mauricio Rua this coming weekend at the TD Garden in Boston, MA.

This time, the thought police are after MMA….and not in New York state, where UFC has been fighting to get the sport made legal in the state.

On August 14, UFC will come to Boston, MA with “Ultimate Fighting Champion Homecoming,” a PR event  to celebrate the return of the sport to Boston.

But now those who want to sanitize sports (entertainment wasn’t enough) for your protection, want to pass a law in Boston to keep minors from attending a live MMA event in Boston.

One of the items in this week’s news featured demands by the City of New York to James Dolan and media conglomerate Cablevision, the owners of Madison Square Garden that they have 10 years to find a new location to place Madison Square Garden.

This, despite, well-publicized renovations to the venue over the last three years to the tune of nearly $1 billion.

On a weekend where we are still dealing with the verdict of the George Zimmerman trial a week ago, and the demonstrations against the verdict this weekend just past; it’s time to re-run a column from the past…one that talks about racism in America. In this case, it’s what one wrestler, Rocco Brumbaugh, did to make a small change in one American city.

For those of you who haven’t ever heard of him, Rocco Monroe Brumbaugh, aka Sputnik Monroe, was a legendary character in the true old-time Southern wrestling manner. If that was all Sputnik Monroe was…that would have been more than enough for a few good stories among old friends and students of wrestling.

I’m on vacation this week, and will return just before July 4th weekend. So as I do around each July 4th weekend…I remember the passing of former WWF referee Joey Marella who died as the result of an automobile accident on the New Jersey Turnpike, while traveling to Newark, NJ from a WWF show in Ocean City, MD.

As most of you know, PWBTS.com, the flagship site of this column, focuses on coverage and promotion of independent wrestling. As someone who happily shills independent wrestling promotions whenever possible, one of the things that pisses me off is the way independent promotions seems to have no sense about the basic sorts of things that they need to do to promote their product.

First, word on a long-overdue but welcome step by WWE to address the issue of concussions in wrestling.

This past week, World Wrestling Entertainment contributed $1.2 million over three years to further research aimed at developing a treatment for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. CTE, which has been seen in athletes and wrestlers suffering repeated concussions, and is linked to depression and dementia. This fact and the liability for it has notably challenged by the class action lawsuit by 4,000 former NFL players against the league. CTE has been linked to depression and dementia.
