What If? – Women’s Wrestling Edition #5

What IfOWW Women’s Wrestling Columnist Eric Holt discusses the “what ifs” of women’s wrestling that could’ve/would’ve/should’ve happened, from championship reigns to returns/debuts to storyline options.

What if…Thea Trinidad gets signed by WWE?

Thea Trinidad had a two-year run with TNA as Rosita. During her time in TNA, she was paired up with Sarita as her storyline cousin. Together, the pair won the Knockouts Tag Team titles, making it Rosita’s first-ever championship reign. Thea/Rosita brought a high-flying style of wrestling to TNA and some Puerto Rican flavor to the company as well. Despite that, her run with TNA did not last long, and she was eventually released from her contract.

M.V.D. – Most Valuable Diva of the Week: Brie Bella

MVDOWW Women’s Wrestling Columnist Eric Holt chooses his M.V.D.- Most Valuable Diva(s) of the week, based on television matches, promos, and/ or segments.

Brie Bella has been on a roll these past couple of months with how impressive she has been in the ring and with her character. This week on Monday Night RAW, Brie continued her shine when she picked up a win over Divas Champion AJ in a ten diva tag team match. Despite the shortness of the match, Brie was impressive during the time she got to compete, and in my opinion, she was the standout competitor in the match. Although it seemed as though WWE was leaning more towards Natalya challenging AJ for the Divas Championship, Brie’s victory over AJ may now cause a change in plans. Brie also was part of a backstage segment with her twin sister Nikki and boyfriend Daniel Bryan’s current rival Randy Orton. During the segment, Randy insulted Daniel Bryan and told Brie she needs a “real man” aka Randy Orton. Brie stood up for her man, calling him a real man and champion, showing that she was not going to back down from Randy or be intimidated by him. That segment was absolute GOLD in my eyes. Brie brought a lot of personality and character to this segment, and I loved how she stood up for herself and Daniel Bryan against Randy Orton. She looked and sounded like a strong woman.  With Brie’s noticeable improvements, her clean win over Divas Champion AJ, and her real-life relationship with Daniel Bryan coming into play, the possibilities for Brie are endless. Will we see her challenge AJ for the Divas Championship? Will she play a role in the Daniel Bryan/Randy Orton/WWE Corporation feud? Either way, Brie is bound to receive a push in the near future.

Come back next week to see who will be the Most Valuable Diva of the week.

Did you agree/disagree with my pick for M.V.D.? Who do you think should have been this week’s M.V.D.? Give me your thoughts in the comments section below, or tweet me your thoughts @_ericholt_ .

What If? : Women’s Wrestling Edition #4

What If

“What If?” is a weekly column where I discuss the “what ifs” of women’s wrestling that could’ve/would’ve/should’ve happened, from championship reigns to returns/debuts to storyline options.

Diva Dirt recently did an interview with former WWE developmental diva Anya. After listening to the interview, I knew what I wanted this week’s “what if” to be. With that said…

This week’s What If is:

Anya was never released from WWE?

I’ll never forget reading an article on WWE.com earlier this year about some of NXT’s superstars and divas having promising futures in the WWE. Anya happened to be one of those people mentioned. Based on what I read about her athletic background and pictures I looked at of her, I knew Anya was going to be something special in WWE. There was a certain uniqueness about her that made me feel like WWE diva fans were going to take notice of her. She was given the moniker of being the “Russian Bruiser,” which made me think that she was going to have a powerhouse style of wrestling. The NXT Universe and myself anxiously awaited the arrival of Anya, and we continued to wait for her to arrive even after she was out with an injury. Unfortunately, before we got a chance to see what Anya had to offer, she was released along with many other NXT hopefuls. Anya never got the chance to make the impact WWE told us she was going to make.

AJ: On RAW, AJ shocked Kaitlyn and the WWE Universe when she revealed to them that she set up the “secret admirer” thing. AJ went on to explain why she did it: Kaitlyn was busy chasing the Divas Championship, while AJ was busy getting her heart broken. The resident Crazy Chick got into Kaitlyn’s mind, causing Kaitlyn to break down.

This week’s nominees for M.V.D. are:

Taryn Terrell: For the past few months, Taryn Terrell had a lot of tension with Gail Kim, and at Slammiversary, Taryn was looking to settle things by competing in the first-ever Last Knockout Standing Match against Gail Kim. The match consisted of “Holy Shit” chants and some great spots, including the chair crossbody, figure four leg locks around the ring post, and a cutter from off the stage. Taryn Terrell ultimately won the match and a lot of respect from wrestling fans. If any women’s wrestling fan called Taryn’s performance in this match a hot mess, they should visit the nearest eye doctor ASAP!

This week’s nominees for M.V.D. are:

The Bella Twins: The Bella Twins were in tag team action on RAW against Divas Champion and the birthday girl Natalya. After ducking out the way of Kaitlyn’s spear and causing her to spear Natalya, Brie Bella got the win for her and sister Nikki. Adding insult to injury, The Bella Twins decided to sing their own rendition of “Happy Birthday,” which included them calling Natalya a LOSER! The Bella did a great job displaying their bitchy heel characters, but they could have displayed better wrestling skills during the match.

Kaitlyn: Kaitlyn teamed up with Natalya to take on The Bella Twins on RAW. Kaitlyn and Natalya looked as though they were going to win, but after accidentally spearing her own partner, Kaitlyn cost her and Natalya the match. Sorry Kaitlyn, but I don’t think Nattie wanted a spear as one of her birthday presents.

Natalya: In her hometown of Canada, Natalya celebrated her birthday. Going into RAW, Natalya hoped that her birthday was going to go well. Her birthday started off well after her boyfriend Khali sang her “Happy Birthday.” However, things took a turn for the worst during her tag match, where she teamed up with Kaitlyn to take on The Bella Twins. When partner Kaitlyn was going to help Nattie by spearing Brie Bella, Brie ducked out of the way, and Kaitlyn accidentally speared Nattie instead. Brie got the win over Natalya. After the match, Natalya was left in tears after The Bella Twins called her a LOSER while singing their own rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Well, at least there’s always next year for a better birthday.

What If

This week’s What If is:

Jillian Hall had a longer Divas Championship reign?

Back in 2009, WWE decided to have a diva trade take place on an edition of Monday Night RAW. Before that, Mickie James defended her Divas Championship against Jillian Hall. Jillian Hall won the match and the Divas Championship after nailing a powerbomb to Mickie and using the ropes. Jillian Hall was excited about her win, but that was about to change.

Guest host Nancy O’Dell announced that a Diva Trade had taken place, and the changes were effective immediately. She went on to announce that Jillian Hall would be defending her newly won Divas Championship against Melina, who had been traded from Smackdown to RAW. Melina defeated Jillian  that night to become the new Divas Championship. Jillian Hall’s Divas Championship reign lasted five minutes, the shortest reign in Divas Championship history.

What If

This week’s What If is:

Beth Phoenix had never broken her jaw?

Beth Phoenix made her WWE debut when she attacked Mickie James after Mickie had just defended her Women’s Championship against Maria and went after Trish and her shoulder injury. In the coming weeks, Beth continued to go after Mickie, eventually leading to the fans finding out that Beth and Mickie had bad history with each other and Beth becoming Trish’s new friend and RAW’s newest diva. Beth Phoenix won her first WWE match when she teamed up with Torrie Wilson to defeat Victoria and Candice Michelle.

This week’s nominees for M.V.D. are:

Kaitlyn: On RAW, Kaitlyn received a text message from her secret admirer and read it to Natalya and The Funkadactyls. However, Kaitlyn still has no idea who her secret admirer is. When Kaitlyn, Natalya, and The Funkdactyls left the scene, The Bella Twins came from behind a curtain, high-fiving each other and looking devious, giving us a hint that they could be Kaitlyn’s admirer. Later in the night, Kaitlyn teamed up with The Funkadactyls to face AJ and The Bellas. Kaitlyn won the match for her team after AJ was unsuccessful with tagging in one of The Bellas.
