Davey Boy Smith Career History

In the Beginning

  • Davey Boy Smith began his training at the very young age of 14, under the guidance of Ted Betley, in his native country of England.
  • Davey Boy Smith (aged 17) was wrestling all over the United Kingdom, as well as Germany and Japan.
  • Davey Boy Smith brought to North America by his cousin, Tom Billington (aka the Dynamite Kid).

Stampede Wrestling

  • Davey Boy Smith joined Stu Hart’s Calgary-based Stampede Wrestling promotion.
  • Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid engaged in a feud for several months before forming a tag team.
  • During this time, Davey Boy Smith met his future wife, and daughter of Stu Hart – - Miss Diana Hart.
  • Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid became a tremendous team, and split their time between Stampede and New Japan Pro Wrestling.
  • 1985: Vince McMahon struck a deal with Stu Hart to buy Stampede and wanted Bret Hart, Jim Neidhart, Davey Boy and Dynamite Kid.
  • ~~~(Side note: Vince McMahon failed to make payments to the Hart Family and the deal was never finalized).

World Wrestling Federation – The British Bulldogs

  • Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid would become known as the British Bulldogs and managed by Capt. Lou Albano.
  • January 2, 1986 – TNT: The British Bulldogs had a tea party with Mr. Fuji and Moondog Spot (Spot destroyed set).
  • March 1, 1986 – SNME: Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine defeated The British Bulldogs to retain the Tag Team titles.
  • April 5, 1986 – WrestleMania II: The Bulldogs w/Ozzy Osborne defeated Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake to win the Tag Titles!
  • May 3, 1986 – SNME: The British Bulldogs defeated The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff to retain the Tag Team titles.
  • October 4, 1986 – SNME: The British Bulldogs defeated Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine to retain the Tag Team titles.
  • Late 1986: The Dynamite Kid severly injured his back, so they needed a plan to get the titles of the Bulldogs.
  • January 1987: The Hart Foundation (Jim Neidhart and Bret Hart) defeated The British Bulldogs for the Tag Team titles.
  • ~~~WWF managemet decided to hide Dynamite’s injured back by having one of the Harts attack him before the match.
  • ~~~The Dynamite Kid was laid out and stayed outside on the floor for the entire match.
  • ~~~Davey Boy Smith, left to fend for himself, was pinned for the titles in the ring.
  • The British Bulldogs took some time off to get Dynamite’s back in shape, but they came back too quickly.
  • March 29, 1987 – WrestleMania III: The Hart Foundation and Danny Davis defeated The British Bulldogs and Tito Santana.
  • May 2, 1987 – SNME: The British Bulldogs defeated The Hart Foundation (Tag Team Champions).
  • ~~~The Bulldogs won the 2/3 Falls match in two straight falls but since the first was by DQ the titles did not change.
  • November 26, 1987 – Survivor Series: The British Bulldogs participated in a huge 10-Team Elimination match.
  • ~~~Team #1: The British Bulldogs, The Rougeau Brothers, The Young Stallions, The Killer Bees and Strike Force.
  • ~~~Team #2: Demolition, The Hart Foundation, The Bolshavics, The Islanders and Dream Team II (Team #1 WON).
  • The British Bulldogs took some more time off so that so Dynamite Kid could rehabilitate his injured back properly.
  • Late 1987: The British Bulldogs returned with their mascot, Matilda, who was dognapped by the Islanders!
  • March 27, 1988 – Wrestlemania IV: The Islanders and Bobby Heenan defeated The British Bulldogs and Koko B. Ware.
  • April 30, 1988 – Summerslam: Demolition (Ax and Smash) defeated The British Bulldogs by DQ to retain the Tag Team titles.
  • July 31, 1988 – WrestleFest: Demolition (Ax and Smash) defeated The British Bulldogs to retain the Tag Team titles.
  • Legitimate backstage heat began to develope between the British Bulldogs and The Rougeau Brothers.
  • August 28, 1988 – Summerslam: The British Bulldogs vs The Rougeau Brothers ended in a time limit draw.
  • November 24, 1988 – Survivor Series: The British Bulldogs participated in a huge 10-Team Elimination match.
  • ~~~Team #1: The Powers of Pain, The Rockers, The Young Stallions, The British Bulldogs and The Hart Foundation.
  • ~~~Team #2: Deamolition, The Brain Busters, The Rougeau Brothers, The Bolshiviks, The Conquistators.
  • ~~~The Rougeaus were eliminated early, so they could get backstage and leave the building as fast as possible.

Back to Stampede

  • December 1988: The British Bulldogs headed back to Stu Hart’s Stampede Wrestling in Calgary.
  • The British Bulldogs quickly won the International Tag Team titles.
  • The British Bulldogs lost the titles a few days later, due to interference by Davey Boy’s “cousin”, Johnny Smith.
  • ~~~Dynamite Kid blamed Davey Boy Smith for the loss, and a violent feud erupted between the two.
  • March 24, 1989: Davey Boy Smith defeated Don Muraco for the Stampede North American Heavyweight title.
  • July 4, 1989: Davey Boy Smith and Jason the Terrible and Chris Benoit were injured in a head-on automobile accident in Jasper.
  • ~~~Davey suffered a cracked vertebrae in his back and needed 100 stitches in his head after being thrown through the windshield.
  • ~~~Jason suffers 2 fractures in his left leg and Benoit suffers an injured right knee.

World Wrestling Federation – The British Bulldog

  • 1990: Davey Boy Smith briefly toured Europe and Japan before returning to the World Wrestling Federation.
  • Davey Boy Smith had trademarked the “British Bulldog” name and used it in his singles career.
  • January 19, 1991 – Royal Rumble: The British Bulldog entered at #14 but was eliminated by Earthquake.
  • March 24, 1991 – WrestleMania VII: The British Bulldog defeated The Warlord.
  • April 24, 1991 – UK Rampage: The British Bulldog defeated The Berzerker.
  • August 26, 1991 – Summerslam: The Bulldog and Kerry Von Erich and Ricky Steamboat beat The Warlord and Hercules and Paul Roma.
  • October 3, 1991 – Royal Albert Hall: The British Bulldog defeated The Barbarian | The Bulldog also won a Battle Royal.

  • The British Bulldog took some time off to look after some nagging injuries.

World Championship Wrestling

  • December 1992: Davey Boy Smith wrestled a few independent shows, most noteworthy in Eastern Championship Wrestling.
  • February 21, 1993 – SuperBrawl III: Davey Boy Smith made his WCW debut, defeating Bill Irwin.
  • Davey Boy Smith quickly began a feud with WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Big Van Vader.
  • May 23, 1993 – Slamboree: Davey Boy Smith defeated Big Van Vader (World Champion) by DQ (Vader retains).
  • June 16, 1993 – The Clash: Big Van Vader and Sid Vicious and Rick Rude defeated Sting and Davey Boy Smith and Dustin Rhodes.
  • July 18, 1993 – Beach Blast: Davey Boy Smith and Sting defeated Big Van Vader and Sid Vicious.
  • August 18, 1993 – The Clash: Big Van Vader defeated Davey Smith to retain the World Heavyweight title.
  • September 19, 1993 – Falls Brawl: Sting and Smith and Dustin Rhodes and Shockmaster beat Sid and Vader and Harlem Heat in War Games!
  • September 1993: Davey Boy Smith began a feud with TV Champion and fellow european Steven Regal.
  • October 24, 1993 – Halloween Havoc: Davey Boy Smith vs Lord Steven Regal went to a time limit draw.
  • November 10, 1993 – The Clash: The Nasty Boys (Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags) defeated Sting and Davey Boy Smith.
  • November 20, 1993 – Battlebowl: Road Warrior Hawk and Rip Rogers defeated Davey Boy Smith and Kole in a Lethal Lottery match.
  • July 1993: Davey Boy Smith got into an altercation with a man who was messing with his wife, Diana at a bar.
  • ~~~Davey was so angry, he attacked the man, putting him in the hospital for 7 weeks, and causing permanent brain damage.
  • ~~~When the case finally came to court later in the year, Davey Boy Smith’s contract was terminated by WCW.
  • ~~~Davey Boy Smith was scheduled to feud with International Heavyweight Champion, Rick Rude, at the time of his departure.

Back to the World Wrestling Federation

  • August 1994: The British Bulldog returned to the WWF where there was an ongoing feud going on between Bret Hart and Owen Hart.
  • ~~~The British Bulldog sided with Bret “The Hitman” Hart while Jim “The Anvil” Niedhart joined forces with Owen Hart.
  • ~~~A series of amazing Owen Hart and Jim Neidhart vs. Bret Hart and British Bulldog matches followed for several months.
  • October 3, 1994 – RAW: The British Bulldog defeated Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart by DQ.
  • October 17, 1994 – RAW: The British Bulldog defeated Roy Raymond.
  • November 7, 1994 – RAW: Bret Hart and The British Bulldog defeated Owen Hart and Jim Neidhart.
  • November 23, 1994 – Survivor Series: Razor Ramon’s team defeated Shawn Michaels team in an Elimination match.

  • The British Bulldog was paired up with Lex Luger in a powerhouse team known as the Allied Powers.
  • January 2, 1995 – RAW: Bam Bam Bigelow and Tatanka vs. The Allied Powers ended in a Double Count Out.
  • January 22, 1995 – Royal Rumble: British Bulldog entered the Rumble at #2 and was eliminated by Shawn Michaels (#1).
  • ~~~Shawn Michael and British Bulldog were the first two to enter and made it to the final two, with Michaels winning!
  • January 23, 1995 – RAW: The British Bulldog defeated The Black Phantom.
  • March 6, 1995 – RAW: Shawn Michaels defeated The British Bulldog.
  • April 2, 1995 – Wrestlemania XI: The Allied Powers (Lex Luger and The British Bulldog) defeated Jacob and Eli Blu.

  • June 5, 1995 – RAW: Owen Hart vs The British Bulldog ended in a Draw.
  • July 10, 1995 – RAW: The Allied Powers (Lex Luger and The British Bulldog) defeated Tatanka and Henry Godwinn.
  • July 23, 1995 – In Your House 2: Owen Hart and Yokozuna defeated Lex Luger and British Bulldog to retain the World Tag Team Titles.
  • August 21, 1995 – RAW: The Allied Powers were suppose to take on Men On a Mission, but Lex Luger no-showed the match.
  • ~~~Diesel (WWF World champion) asked The British Bulldog if he could be his partner for one night only.
  • ~~~Diesel and The British Bulldog vs. Men on a Mission ended in a No Contest when Bulldog turned on Diesel.
  • ~~~The whole thing was a setup, as The British Bulldog attacked Diesel and celebrated with Men on a Mission.
  • ~~~The British Bulldog had turned heel and taken Jim Cornetteas his manager and eventually began teaming with Owen Hart.

  • April 28, 1997 – RAW: The Undertaker defeated WWE European Champion The British Bulldog by DQ (Owen and Bulldog got chased away, and Steve Austin went after wheelchair-bound Bret Hart on the stage but Jim Neidhart returned to save Bret! Bret whacked Steve Austin with a crutch and sent him flying off the stage!).

World Wrestling Federation

  • While recovering, Davey had several conversations with Owen Hart (still in the WWF) about returning to the Fed.
  • After Owen’s tragic death, the Bulldog was intent on returning to the WWF to preserve the memory of his brother-in-law.
  • August 1999: The British Bulldog once again signed with the World Wrestling Federation.
  • September 9, 1999 – SD!: The British Bulldog beat The Big Bossman to win the WWF Hardcore Title, and gave it to Al Snow.
  • ~~~The British Bulldog made it clear it was his goal to win the WWF Heavyweight title.
  • ~~~The British Bulldog turned heel, turning on The Rock in a match where the Bulldog was the referee.
  • September 23, 1999 – Smackdown!: Triple H defeated The Rock in a Brahma Bull Strap Match with The British Bulldow as referee (Bulldog turned heel and helped Triple H win).

  • From there, Davey’s drug problem got worse, and Vince requested that Davey go into rehab, at McMahons expense.
  • Davey Boy Smith seemed to be on the right track at times, but could not deal with the struggle of rehab.
  • Davey Boy Smith’s troubles mounted when he ‘reportedly’ threatened to kill his estranged wife and one of her sisters.
  • Davey Boy Smith and Diana got a divorce soon after and was released from the WWF after one too many second chances.

The Death of Davey Boy Smith

  • Tom “Dynamite Kid” Billington despised his cousin Davey Boy Smith so much, he can’t bring himself to say his name.
  • May 18, 2002: Tragically Davey Boy Smith died of a heart attack while on vacation in British Columbia with his girlfriend.
  • Davey’s son “Harry Smith” is following his father footsteps wrestling professionally in Stampede Wrestling.
  • March 18, 2004: Davey Boy Smith’s autopsy results were made public by the coroner of British Columbia, Shawn Jestley.
  • ~~~Investigation revealed, that in his profession, Mr. Smith had used anabolic steroids in the past.
  • ~~~Injectable anabolic steroid and paraphernalia was seized by the coroner | Analysis of the steroid revealed trenbolone acetate.
  • ~~~The above described changes in the fibrous connective tissues are consistent with previous anabolic steroid use.
