WCW’s 21 Greatest Gems of All-Time

WCW’s 21 Greatest Gems of All-Time
Originally published on February 1, 2008
Written by Joe L.

This article will  focus on the moments, gems, matches, and events that made WCW (World Championship Wrestling) a serious contender and a force to be reckoned with. Don’t think that I hate WCW, be cause I don’t, and this article will illustrate why. For every Pinata on a Pole, a young stallion named Booker T won the World Heavyweight Championship. For every Mini-Movie Trinity, there was Ric Flair toppling the monster Vader at Starrcade 1993. There were so many great moments in WCW that deserve to be recognized and it is my goal that the recognition of these moments becomes known.

You’ll notice that this column is missing other worthy candidates and I agree.  This column will not cover the pre-1990 WCW because I do not have the great knowledge or time to access them. So if anybody feels outraged about my list, I apologize. Feel free to write your thoughts at the end of the article in the feedback section.

The Flop of the WCW Invasion

Every so often, somebody complains about the lack of execution on the WWE’s part regarding potentially awesome angles. As you can see from my title, this article is about to talk about the biggest flop of them all. That’s right. The WCW vs WWF Invasion was the most disappointing angles of all time. While it was good TV, it wasn’t what everyone thought the WCW vs WWF would have been all about.

If the wrestling universe is a star, Canada, Mexico, United States, Japan and Puerto Rico are the edges. Canada is well know for their scientific skills, great techniques and The Dungeon. Mexico is high flying, over the top gimmicks and great performers. United States is Sport Entertainment, muscular guys and a lot of idolized Gods of Wrestling. Wrestling in Japan is very religious, great sportsmanship and a good dose of craziness. Puerto Rico is Hardcore, Bloody and very passionate.

The City of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia)

A name that has not really had meaning in just over 300 years when William Penn chartered the city in 1701. Philadelphia, being the former capitol of the United States during the colony years and site of the creation/signing of the Declaration of Independence, also has tons of historical sites. There is just too much to talk about Philadelphia as a part of American history. Philadelphia has also been among the most historical places in professional wrestling history.

There’s not a person who hasn’t seen the devastation of the March 11 8.9 earrhquake in the Sendai region of Japan. The earthquake damage and the even more powerful tsunami, whose effects were felt as far as the Pacific North American coastline have killed hundreds of people, with thousands more missing and feared dead, tens of thousands injured, and untold billions of dollars in property destruction.

Luke and Butch: Before the Bushwhackers

Luke and Butch: Before the Bushwhackers

Many people consider the late eighties and early nineties to have been a Golden Age for tag team wrestling in the WWF. They talk about the likes of the Bulldogs, the Hart Foundation, Demolition, the Rockers and, to a lesser extent, Strike Force, High Energy and the Orient Express. Whilst I wouldn’t dispute this to any great extent, this was also the time of the Bolsheviks, the Powers of Pain, the Twin Towers, Colossal Connection and, perhaps the greatest steaming turd in the cesspool, the Bushwhackers.

The very name of this New Zealander team causes many die-hard wrestling fans to sweat in fear and trepidation. Respected members of the Internet Wrestling Community, including Scott Keith and Smash Wrestling’s Arnold Furious refuse to watch their matches during some of their PPV recaps. There must be a good reason for people so obsessively enamoured of wrestling to ignore more of their favourite sport, but were the Bushwhackers REALLY that bad” -  – - – Well…yes.

Rampage Pro Wrestling joins the NWA

Warner Robins, GA- Dr. Johnny Gayton announces that Rampage Pro Wrestling (RPW) recently joined the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) as an Associate Member. All RPW events and television shows will be sanctioned by the NWA.  Dr. Gayton said “I am pleased to have Rampage Pro Wrestling as part of the NWA, a legendary organization that has a storied history in Middle Georgia. I am convinced that this partnership will be good for the fans and wrestlers of RPW and facilitate the resurgence of the NWA in Middle Georgia.”

Legendary wrestling announcer and Hall of Fame member, Gordon Solie, regularly reminded viewers that Georgia Championship Wrestling on WTCG/WTBS was “sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance, the oldest and largest sanctioning body in professional wrestling.”  The NWA formed in 1948 and is celebrating its 63rd year with members throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada, Australia, and Japan.   For several years Total Non-Stop Wrestling (TNA) was sanctioned by the NWA.  Many wrestling fans will recall NWA events at the Macon City Auditorium and the Macon Coliseum where the NWA Macon Heavyweight and NWA Macon Tag Team titles were defended as well as other major NWA titles.  Cyclone & Roberto Soto won the NWA Macon Tag Team Titles in 1969 and Buddy Colt became the 1st NWA Macon Heavyweight Champion in 1970.  Other wrestling stars who defended NWA titles in middle Georgia included Mr. Wrestling 1 & 2, Ole & Gene Anderson, “Hands of Stone” Ronnie Garvin, Rocky Johnson (the father of WWE superstar the Rock), Jerry Lawler, Abdullah the Butcher, the Road Warriors, El Mongol, and many more.  The NWA World Championship has been held by many superstars including Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, Jack Brisco, Dory Funk, Jr., Harley Race, Lou Thesz, Tommy Rich,  AJ Styles, Jeff Jarrett, Raven and current 3 time champion, Adam Pearce

Who’s Hardcore? He’s Hardcore!

Who’s Hardcore” They’re Hardcore!

Now I know everyone who has watched wrestling has heard the word HARDCORE thrown around – like the old WWF Hardcore title. But in my humble opinion, I think that title had nothing to do with hardcore. Now promotions such as CZW, XPW, FMW, and even ECW are hardcore. Men like Sabu, Mr. Pogo, Masato Tanaka, Terry Funk, Super Leather, New Jack, Hayabusa and Mick Foley are hardcore. I respect all these men so much for what they do. Let’s go through the top five hardcore men ever in wrestling.
