The King Has Passed (RIP Curtis Iaukea)

The King Has Passed
(RIP King Curtis Iaukea)
By Mike Lano

The incredibly amazing Curtis Iaukea, known first in our industry as Prince and later as King(not sure how he made that jump quicker than England’s Prince Charles who’s still waiting to become a “king”) was a total, well-known Hawaiin sports legend. He was first a name high school football and wrestling athlete and later
revolutionized the way 5 star promos were done. He sadly died this past Saturday, Dec. 04 after a long illness at age 73.

“He died peacefully, with family around him,” his former wrestling son, Rocky, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. “At his home in Papakolea.”

Iaukea starred in amateur sports at Punahou, and then at the University of California, where he received an award for football excellance on offense and defense.

Television is the Life Blood of Pro-Wrestling

Dory Funk’s Corner
Television is the Life Blood of Professional Wrestling

I remember watching Professional Wrestling from the Marigold Arena in Chicago on television with commentator Jack Brickhouse. I watched Lou Thesz, Walter Palmer (Originator of the Spinning Toe Hold) Indian Chief, Don Eagle and Dory Funk Sr.

In those days the only way to preserve live video was a method called Kinescope whereby live video images were transferred to 16 or 35 millimeter film. Kinescope could be reproduced and bicycled to major cities for television programming, professional wrestling being hugely popular.

Dr. Mike Lano Remembers Edouard Carpentier

Some Great Carp Memories

by Dr. Mike Lano

I never clarified with L’Excellance Ed as to the correct spelling of his name or his preference, because since 1959 we saw all sorts of spellings from Edouard, Edourd, Edourdo, etc. whether he was “the first” AWA or WWA world champ (helping start both promotions actually), the Omaha “AWA” champ for the Duseks, his various WWWF appearances, both major runs in my homebase territory of Los Angeles, for Baba’s AJPW in ’73 and later the AWA-related IWE; of course his AWA and Montreal main runs and more.

Wild Samoan Siki interview recap

For full audio please visit http://www.inyourheadonline.com

Sika the Wild Samoan joined Jack E. Jones, Oneinchbiceps and Barbie Richards for the September 29th edition of In Your Head Wrestling Radio.

Jack begins the interview by asking if what he’s heard about Sika and Afa being fans before they got into wresting and being pretty rowdy. When you’re raised in San Francisco with it being crowded where he lived you got to stand up, and make your way sometimes, and when trouble comes down your way you can’t run, and you have to just stand up and let them know who you are. Him and Ada did that from when they were young kids, and its how they got invited into professional wrestling. Sika says he used to watch wrestling in the Cow Palace, and there was always something going on in his generation.

Jack asks if there was anyone who’d get him riled up, or if it was just whoever was facing Peter Maivia. He says his brother didn’t really tell him anything about the business, and it took him a long time to learn that it’s a hard job.
