Funk’s Corner: Do Your Best & Don’t Quit

Funk’s Corner
Do Your Best and Don’t Quit

In the spring of 1998, I was working for then WWF as head Coach of the Funking Dojo wrestling training camp in Stamford Connecticut. I received the list of trainees for the third wrestling training camp. On the list was Olympic Gold Medalist, Kurt Angle. “Hey what a thrill to coach an Olympic Gold Medalist!”

I had trained Jumbo Tsuruta, a Silver Medalist, Anton Geesink a Judo Gold Medalist, Mark Henry Olympic Weight Lifter and Giant Silva an Olympic Basketball Player. I believed that real wrestlers and real athletes are important to the credibility of professional wrestling. My father was an amateur wrestler from Indiana University and he had insisted that I compete in amateur athletics before turning pro.

Tickets on Sale for “Ring Roasts III: Get Corny

TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR “RING ROASTS III: GET CORNY”

The third installment of what has become a wrestling tradition, has been officially announced.  “Ring Roasts III” will take place on Friday, October 15, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza in Mornoe, NJ, and this year’s guest of honor is Jim Cornette.

Cornette spent his career working through the territories and all the majors, but his wrestling afterlife, filled with unhealthy diatribes and tongue-lashings to all who dare cross him, is where he gained his most recent notoriety.  Cornette, in so many ways, is the perfect roastee.

Dory Funk remembers “Karate” Kinji Shibuya

Funk’s Corner – “Karate” Kinji Shibuya

Kinji Shibuya dropped into a defensive football stance and stepped forward bringing his powerful arms up charging and lifting me at the same time.

Kinji said, “You have got to fire out of your stance make contact and lift your opponent at the same time, look for the ball and get rid of the blocker.

We were on the wrestling mat in the garage of Dory Funk Sr.’s home on the Flying Mare Ranch in Umbarger, Texas. Mom and Dad were friends of “Bob” Shibuya, professional wrestler and former football player and amateur wrestler from University of Hawaii.
