On 10/3, the biggest WSU Tag Team Title match in WSU history took place as defending champions Jessicka Havok & Hailey Hatred took on two of the most successful WSU World Champions in WSU history, current WSU World Champion Mercedes Martinez & former World Champion Angel Orsini.
 
We found out earlier in the evening that #1 Contender to the World Title, Rain, hired Havok & Hatred as her special enforcers for the night. That played into the ending of the match.
 
After 20 minutes of battling back & forth, the match turned into a brawl. Both Havok & Hatred found themselves outside on the floor. Angel Orsini daringly moonsaulted from the top rope to the floor, wiping out Havok & Hatred. If that wasn’t enough, as Havok & Hatred were getting to their feet, Mercedes Martinez hit a huge suicide dive!
 
With Havok & Hatred looking like they had their heads scrambled, Orsini & Martinez rolled both into the ring. Orsini & Martinez would hit stereo-brainbusters on the champs. However, before the ref could count to three, RAIN interfered and pulled the ref out of the ring.
 
Not allowing Rain to get an advantage, Portia Perez, who was beaten earlier in the night by Rain, came out to make the save for her friends. This led to a huge pier-6 battle, and saw Angel Orsini, Portia Perez, Havok & Hatred all brawl to the back. The match was ruled a NO-CONTEST.
 
With Martinez in the ring all alone, Rain took the opportunity to decimate the champion. Rain destroyed Martinez with a barrage of steel chair shots. We never saw Martinez look so vulnerable before in WSU. The attack was heinous and despicable.
 
While Martinez will take on Rain at WSU’s next event on 12/12, in the meantime, Martinez has not forgotten how Hatred & Havok have set her up. Orsini, who has her own problems with Havok/Hatred (Check out the “ON THE ROAD 2009 SUMMER TOUR DVD), has agreed to team up with her former protege/student, Mercedes Martinez one more time, in the quest to win the WSU Tag Team Championships.
 
Due to what happened during their first tag team title match, WSU has barred everyone from the WSU roster from interfering in this match. If anyone interferes in this match, they will be suspended from WSU for a year. WSU is dedicated in making sure this match produces a clear-cut winner.
 
Can Martinez & Orsini, the two biggest cornerstones in WSU pick up tag gold on 11/7 at ACE? Or will Havok & Hatred prove to the womens wrestling world why they are called “The Best in the Mid-West.”

Before I start I want to offer my condolences to the friends and family of Captain Lou Albano who passed away earlier this week. I never had the opportunity to meet Captain Lou during my career so I don’t have any personal stories or insight to offer, but never the less was saddened to hear of his passing. RIP Captain Lou…thank you for your contributions to the business I love.

Not a ton of other stuff to talk about today but I have a few things I want to plug that I think a lot of you would enjoy checking out.

ROH has released the 2 Night “Death before Dishonor VII” DVDs. “Death before Dishonor VII” were the two shows in Toronto, Ontario this past July that I work for Ring of Honor. These two events feature what will probably be the last 2 matches of my career. The July 24th event featured fellow Canadian Kevin Steen and me squaring off against Chris Hero and Davey Richards, and the July 25th event featured a singles bout between Chris Hero and myself. I just watched both matches back for the first time, and can tell you I was very happy with my performance in both matches.

When I wrote about these matches right after doing them I commented that I wasn’t what I once was, but looking back that was only half true. After watching them back I feel the work rate and quality was still there, I just had to work a lot harder to get there. In the past I would have been able to do those matches without effort and had a lot left in the tank when they were done. At 40 I had to give it everything I had to keep up with the younger guys and the tank was definitely on empty when it was over. In some ways though, this actually added to the match, especially the single with Hero. I think the sweat and fatigue added some realism to my selling and the credibility of the match, it helped tell a perfect story. I’m very proud of these matches, I hope you check them out.

If seeing my last two matches isn’t hook enough, there is also the usual GREAT ROH Action on the events, as well as an appearance by Bret Hart on the 24th event and Ric Flair on the 25th. Both DVDs are available at: www.ROHwrestling.com and are priced ridiculously low at $20 each.

The other thing I’d like to plug is “Shimmer”. “Shimmer” is a Women’s only Pro Wrestling organization that features some of the most talented women pro wrestlers on the planet. WWE has their Divas, and TNA has their Knock outs, but my God Shimmer has some women who CAN WRESTLE! To be honest I haven’t seen a ton of Shimmer, but the more I see of it the more I like it.

I first picked up a couple “Shimmer” DVD’s for my SWA Library, but never had the time to sit down and watch any of them. I seldom have time to just sit down and watch DVDs so they just sat on my shelf for students to check out. Earlier this year I was contacted by the Shimmer promoter and told that one of my SWA students, Tenille, was booked on their next set of DVD tapings. I was thrilled “Shimmer” was giving Tenille a shot and I was looking forward to watching her match once the DVD was released.

Well the DVD has been released and Tenille lent me her copy, so I could check out her match. The DVD is “Shimmer Vol. #23” and so far I’ve checked out about half of it and boy was I impressed. I haven’t even gotten to the Main Events yet, and I’ve seen some of the best pro-wrestling I’ve seen in a long time. Yes I purposely didn’t say “Best Women’s Wrestling” I’ve seen, because a couple of these matches are so good they stand up to any matches out there men’s or women’s.

Now I’m not saying every match is a mat classic, but even the worst Shimmer matches I’ve seen are still decent and you have to respect these girls for how hard they work. Tenille wrestled Amber O’Neil on the show and to be honest only had a decent match and she is capable of much better. She is going back for the next set of tapings (November 8th) and will likely be more comfortable her second time out and better show case her talents.

The best match I’ve seen on the DVD, so far, featured Sara Del Rey and Madison Eagles. I’ve met Sara a couple times doing ROH appearances so I’ve seen her work, but Madison Eagles I’d never even heard of before. This match blew me away. This match featured some of the best mat wrestling I’ve seen this side of Bryan Danielson. These girls were AWESOME, these girls can WRESLE. I CAN NOT praise this match or recommend this DVD enough. The DVD is priced absurdly low at $14.95 and this match alone is worth that. Guys in this business could watch these two girls work to improve their mat skills, hell if I was coming back, I’d watch this match again, for s–t to steal.

There are a ton of great women workers on this DVD including Daze Haze, who I’m also a big fan of, Amazing Kong (TNA’s Awesome Kong) and I can’t wait to check out the Main Event featuring Shimmer Champion Mischif defending her title against Serena Deeb. I haven’t had the opportunity to see either of these girls yet but if they are Main Eventing a show already this good, they must be great.

If you miss the days of Trish Stratus, Jazz, Molly Holly, etc. do yourself a favour and check out “Shimmer”, either on DVD or live. The next Shimmer taping is coming up November 8th in Berwyn, IL which is just out side of Chicago, so if you are in the area PLEASE show your support and attend this event. AYAKO HAMADA – Height: 5′4″ Weight: 143 lbs. Hometown: Mexico City, Mexico. Pro Debut: August 1998. Ayako Hamada has been one of the premier female professional wrestlers worldwide for much of the past decade. Mainly competing in Mexico and Japan thus far in her career, Hamada brings an exciting blend of wrestling styles to the squared circle. The daughter of wrestler Gran Hamada, Ayako’s championship accolades include capturing the Queen of ARSION title in late 2000, winning the prestigious WWWA singles championship in All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling during 2003, and becoming AAAW champion in GAEA during 2004. The Main Event Mafia’s Traci Brooks joined The Monday Night Mayhem Radio Network as part of the countdown to TNA’s Bound For Glory PPV this Sunday night from The Bren Events Center in Irvine, CA. As many have had the chance to see, TNA’s original Knockout, has had the opportunity to cross over into the world of Playboy, and has received rave reviews for her work with the magazine. There has been many rumors swirling online how Traci was originally scheduled to be on the cover of Playboy, but was bumped for others, including Marge Simpson. Traci used The Mayhem’s airwaves as a platform to address the controversy. “The funny thing is, you know how I feel about anything on the Internet. First of all, I was never promised the cover. That was someone posing to be me answering the question. I did the photo shoot in May, someone found out about it, & gave the information out…the wrong information of course. No one ever promised the cover. Hef (Hugh Hefner) had the final decision on the cover. Unfortunately Farrah Fawcett passed away, and if you go inside the magazine, she is the celebrity pictorial, which I was supposed to be, but he wanted to honor her, since she was in the magazine before. I got bumped for Farrah Fewcett, which I’m not going to complain about because she was a sex icon.”

Some reports have recently surfaced that one of Traci’s Main Event Mafia colleagues, Booker T, will be leaving TNA at the end of his current contract, and possibly return back to the WWE. Traci was asked how this could change The Mafia’s dynamic, as well as if this could affect the long-term viability of the group going into its one-year anniversary as a faction. “Everything is going great. People need to focus more on what’s going on TV than all the rumors backstage. We put on a helluva product, and right now, The Main Event Mafia is doing great. We’re defending all the titles this week except for Kurt Angle wrestling Matt Morgan, and of course, Kurt is going to come out on top.”

The original stomping grounds for TNA was not Universal Studios’ iMPACT Zone, but The Nashville Fairgrounds, affectionately referrer to as “The Asylum.” It has been reported that the fairgrounds may be either remodeled or torn down completely by the end of next summer. Traci’s career with TNA Wrestling goes back to the original Wednesday night Pay-Per-View days of the company, when it was in its infancy stages. The Big Mosh asked Traci for her memories of performing there & her emotions on the news of the building closing next year. “It goes back before TNA, there was some great wrestling there. It was the home of TNA, and I have some great memories there. My debut, I went for the (NWA) Tag Team Titles with David Young. I always say my wrestling career started then. It will be sad to see the doors close on The Asylum.”

Looking back on the rise of the Knockout division in TNA throughout the past several years, Traci Brooks was indeed there from the beginning of the women’s division, and very much is proud to see the growth of one of the company’s most important parts. The Mayhem Crew asked about the recent additions to the Knockouts division, plus what she wants to accomplish during the remainder of her TNA in-ring career. “I’m wrestling more, hopefully going for the gold with Sharmell. I can’t be happier about Taylor (Wilde) & Sarita, good Canadian girls that are there, & holding the (Knockouts) Tag Team Titles. They represent TNA very well. They’re beautiful, classy, & absolutely talented. I can’t believe I went from being the only Knockout to there being 23 girls there now.”

Before the show could even start, Angel Orsini & Rain brawled throughout the building. Orsini & Rain have had a testy relationship ever since Rain debuted in WSU on 1/10/09. It all finally exploded on 8/22 and this was the first time these two were in the same place at the same time since Orsini finally had enough of Rain’s BS. Security and management had to break these two up before the show officially started.

MATCH TWO
Jana d. Jennifer Cruz, giving Jana the 2-1 advantage in this mini-feud that has been brewing in WSU.

After the match, Jana made it clear she still had unfinished business with WSU Spirit Champion and former partner, Latasha.

In a special edition of Missy’s Manor, hosted by 2009 WSU Hall of Famer Missy Hyatt, Missy Hyatt welcomed back Becky Bayless, who made her return to WSU after a 14 month absence. Becky was welcomed back to the fans. WSU fans learned that Missy Hyatt had applied for a managers license in WSU and Becky wanted Missy to manage her. However, Rick Cataldo came out to interrupt. Rick Cataldo stated that WSU replaced one drunk with another, referencing Sean Hanson, who lost a Loser-Leaves-WSU match last show and Becky’s 2008 DUI. Cataldo made several other comments about Becky’s personal life, which riled up Becky and this match started off with a bang.

With Brittney Force unable to make the show, Latasha said she wanted to defend her title tonight. Latasha gave out an open challenge to the WSU roster, which was answered by her best friend and traveling partner from Boston, Lea Morrison. The two were having an epic clash, until Jana ran out. Jana attacked Latasha, which made the ref call for a DQ. Lea was upset that she was screwed out of a title opportunity. Lea said she wanted to kick Jana’s ass but also wanted a title match. Latasha said she would take on both Lea and Jana in a Triple Threat match at the next event.

MATCH SIX
WSU Tag Team Title Match

During the match, Rick Cataldo, who announced on Missy’s Manor that he had a manager’s contract as well in WSU, came out to scout this match. After Carter was pinned, Rick came into the ring. It was shockingly revealed that Cataldo signed Carter behind Alicia’s back. Cataldo & Carter then attacked Alicia. This is MUST SEE on the DVD release, as this was one of the most despicable acts ever in WSU, although the most despicable act ever in WSU was still yet to come at the end of the night.

Carter then announced she was sick of being called something she wasn’t and being so happy all the time. Carter said her real name is Brittney Savage, something that you can look up online if you don’t believe her, and this is what she’s really like. Brittney Savage said she is sick of playing the role of a good girl and that Brooke Carter was dead. Brittney said she is sick of having to deal with Alicia and somewhat sounded jealous of Alicia’s previous accolades.

Savage then went to curb stomp Alicia, American History X style, until Becky Bayless ran out to help Alicia. After two years, Bayless & Alicia were back in the ring together, for the first time, since December 2007. Bayless & Alicia challenged Cataldo/Savage to a match on the next event.

MATCH SEVEN
UNCENSORED RULES
Rain d. Angel Orsini
In a wild 25+ minute brawl, Rain got the upper-hand on her former business associate Angel Orsini. This was another MUST SEE on DVD match, as we saw a new side of Rain. These two brawled all over Union City, and even had a bar room fist fight. After the end of all this insanity and brutality, Rain defeated Orsini after her patented implant DDT.

MATCH EIGHT
WSU World Title Match

Martinez & Perez ripped it up again in their rematch from November 2008. After 24+ minutes, Martinez was able to win the match with her fisherman brainbuster to retain the title.

After the match, Rain came out. Rain pled her case as number 1 contender. Rain said her partner Nikki Roxx, wasn’t
here because Roxx had better things to do then show her face in this dump called Union City. Portia said Rain had
no friends. Rain made it clear that she doesn’t have friends, but she has partners, and brought out her hired guns,
WSU Tag Champs Havok & Hatred. Havok, Hatred & Rain attacked Martinez & Perez, who had just fought an epic battle.

However, Angel Orsini came out and made the save for her long time friend Martinez. After another war of words, Orsini & Martinez challenged Havok/Hatred for the WSU Tag Team Titles and Portia vs Rain, with the winner becoming the number 1 contender to the WSU World Title was signed!

Jana hit a vicious spinebuster on Lea Morrison, with Morrison taking the brunt of the move on the back of her head. Jana took advantage of an injury and pinned Lea to win the championship. Latasha, who lost her championship but did not factor in the decision, was irate that Jana went out of her way to injure her “real-life” best friend. This feud between Latasha & Jana, which is almost at the one-year mark has gotten extremely personal, with Jana going out of her way to injure Latasha’s best friend to win the WSU Spirit Championship. It was a plan that Jana told WSUWrestling.com after the match was in the works ever since 8/22. However, perhaps Jana thought she could never beat Latasha for the belt on her own, which is why she lured Latasha into agreeing to a match where Latasha could lose her title if she didn’t get beat.

In an update, Lea Morrison had a mild concussion after the match. Morrison was treated and should be well soon.

MATCH FOUR
Amber O’Neal d. Malia Hosaka to extend her winning streak to 4-0. It seems that WSU has really brought the best out
of Amber O’Neal, as Amber has shown more drive and determination at this point in her career than ever before.

#1 Contender Match to the WSU World Championship
Rain d. Portia Perez
Before the match, Rain brought out Havok & Hatred as her back-up but Orsini & Martinez ran them off to make sure this match stayed one-on-one. Despite having her plan foiled, Rain showed that she is a true threat by winning the match and cementing her status as the top challenger to the WSU World Title in this excellent singles match.

MATCH SIX
For the WSU World Tag Team Championship
(c) Jessicka Havok & Hailey Hatred fought WSU World Champion Mercedes Martinez & Angel Orsini to a No-Contest
In a wild tag match, that featured top rope dives to the floor and showing the quality of tag team wrestling in WSU, the match went to a no-contest when Rain came out to interfere. Portia Perez came out to help Martinez & Orsini, but Orsini & Perez wound up fighting all the way to the locker room with Havok & Hatred. This distraction left Martinez vulnerable and Rain seized her opportunity to get time with the wounded champion, who has been battling through neck, shoulder, knee and back injuries. Rain completely decimated Martinez. This is not an exaggeration.

WSU fans have never seen Martinez so battered and weakened, as Rain destroyed Martinez. Martinez, who wrestled on 10/3 injured, as she refused to take time off to recuperate her injuries, became a victim of her grueling schedule. Rain picked apart Martinez. For the first time ever in WSU, a show ended without a hand being raised, as Rain ended the show by dismantling the champion. In an iconic and symbolizing act, after beating on Martinez with a barrage of chair shots, Rain grabbed the world title and hoisted it over her head for everyone to see. Rain promised the championship would be hers the next time she stepped inside a WSU ring. Martinez had to be assisted to the back and due to her pre-existing injuries and injuries received by Rain, needed EMT attention.

Before this attack, every WSU event has ended with a clear-cut winner. Rain decided to change all that and make a statement. The statement has been heard by the womens wrestling world, and Rain has proclaimed herself as the next WSU World Champion. With Martinez fighting through serious injuries and Rain proving that she will do anything to win the title, it looks like the Rain Era has begun. To understand the severity of this situation, one must check out the DVD of this show once it is released.

WSU Post Show News/Notes:

During the event, WSU announced that they will be giving a match to the upcoming Dragon Gate “Independent Tour De Force” DVD. This DVD will feature top matches from many top independent promotions from across the United States. This DVD, which will be given away for free by Dragon Gate USA to ringside ticket holders on upcoming DragonGate USA shows will feature the Mercedes Martinez vs Nikki Roxx World Title Match from 8/22. We will have full information about this DVD in upcoming updates. As Dragon Gate tries to do something new, exciting and fresh in the United States, WSU is happy to expose Dragon Gate fans to the best in womens wrestling today.

WSU will like to thank ACE Pro Wrestling and their staff, specifically Mike Morgan, John Fallon, DJ Cyco & Lauren Nolan for their help and assistance in making WSU’s debut in Union City successful and with ease. WSU plans on returning to Union City this winter, as we are trying to coordinate a date that is best for our talent and fans, as we know there are many upcoming events the northeast area in late November/December, which is our target for our next event.

WSU will be working with other northeast promotions as usual during the fall/winter, as WSU is proud to be working with both the ACE & NWS promotions. We hope to announce a full schedule of matches later this week, as WSU has been approached by different organizations for WSU title defenses.

Ex-WWE diva Terri Runnels recently traveled to London to be at the side Martin Duggan, a 29-year-old wrestling fan whose bad kidney has forced him to three-times-a-week dialysis treatments — and a kidney transplant.

“Martin is the uber fan, he’s a phenomenal fan of WWE, of wrestling in general, but he’s especially fond of me, God bless his soul,” Terri said of Duggan, who had to overcome two huge obstacles in his journey to the operating table — finding a donor and shedding a substantial amount of weight.

“He has needed a kidney for some time, but he was too obese to be put on the viable candidates list to be able to get a kidney,” Terri said.

Duggan “doesn’t necessarily have a lot of money, and couldn’t afford gym memberships,” Runnels said, adding she told him to engage in free physical activities (such as walking) to help him lose the weight he needed in order to save his life.

“I told him, to motivate him to get his20kidney … barring some personal emergency, I will be there by your side for your operation,” Terri said. “He’s become very near and dear in my heart, and its cool that I could motivate him to do what he needed to do for himself, and see the whole process come to fruition.

Wrestler’s Rescue founder Dawn Marie said it came as no shock to hear what Terri was about to do for this young man.

“Terri is a huge part of Wrestler’s Rescue,” founder Dawn Marie said. “She has been with us since day one, and has always been the first one to raise her hand when it comes to doing events to help with the fundraising efforts of Wrestler’s Rescue.”

Dawn Marie said, upon learning about Runnels’ trip, she asked her how she would cover the considerable traveling expenses involved.

“She informed me that she was going to pay for it out of her own pocket, unless we knew of someone that would want to help her in her efforts,” Dawn Marie said. “I immediately called on some people that I know are friends of our program and informed them what Terri was about to do.”

That led to Majestic Promotions’ Eric Poppel, who Dawn Marie said donated $500 to help Terri’s cause.

“Knowing Terri is a single mother, we did not want her to lay the money for her trip to the UK out of pocket,” Poppel said. “We decided the right thing to do was make a $500 donation. Our hopes are this will help bring attention to what Terri is doing and also make donations, so s he does not have to take any money out of pocket to visit this ailing fan, who is now on the mend — this is the crux of what motivated [my wife] Lisa and myself.”

Dawn Marie made the acquaintance of Poppel and his wife Lisa booking talent for The Ultimate Collectibles and Autograph Show, which will be held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania Oct. 3-4. There, Dawn Marie and Terri, as well as many other legendary wrestling personalities including “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, Sabu and Steve Corino, among others, will be in attendance.

Poppel said he was moved upon learning about Wrestler’s Rescue, and the organization’s objective to help retired ring generals down on their luck, both physically and financially.

“It touched many nerves for myself and my wife: We have seen first hand retired baseball and specifically football players and the condition their bodies are in after their career is over,” Poppel said. “Wrestler’s Rescue to us is the type of organization that retired football and baseball players should have — Dawn Marie is doing some amazing work and we’re looking forward to seeing her hard work continue to be realized, as the organization continues to grow and help more wrestlers.”

Dawn Marie said she would be continuing to raise funds to assist Terri in her expenses meeting up with Duggan.

“Wrestlers Rescue will be collecting funds from anyone that wishes to help Terri give this amazing story the proper en ding it deserves,” Dawn Marie said. “If more people in this world paid it forward, like that movie many years ago, we would live in a much better world.”

In the wild world of pro wrestling, there are an abundance of odd characters. Topping the list of strange personas is Daffney. The self-proclaimed Scream Queen faced Hamada in a brutal no-disqualification battle. Daffney’s unique character, years of in-ring warfare and last week’s performance has earned her this week’s Wrestler of the Week award.

The World Traveler
Shannon Claire Spruill was born into a military family on July 17, 1975, During her first 12 years, she moved between West Germany, England and the United States. When her father retired in 1987, the family moved to the Atlanta, Georgia area. Shannon completed high school and moved onto college at Georgia State University. She was an outstanding student, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in RTVF (Radio, Television and Film). She also minored in acting. After graduation, she took a job at a video production company. Eventually, she decided to move on to acting, full time. Her first acting gig would last for over a decade, in various forms.

The Birth of Daffney

In November, 1999, World Championship Wrestling sponsored a contest to find new talent. Shannon entered and won. Creative, which often took characters from film and television roles, based Shannon’s new character on the female lead in the movie Natural Born Killers. She was rechristened Daffney. The mentally warped Daffney became infatuated with David Flair and became his girlfriend/manager. She also led Crowbar (Devon Storm) to the ring.

During her time with Crowbar and Flair, she became the Cruiserweight co-champion, along with Crowbar. Thanks to interference from Chris Candido, Daffney was able to pin Crowbar (by accident). She wore the Cruiserweight title until dropping it to Lt. Loco (Chavo Guerrero, Jr.) in a Triple Threat match that also included Disco Inferno. During the match, Miss Hancock (Stacy Keibler) got involved in the match. That kick-started a short, vicious feud between the two. The feud centered around David Flair. Hancock “stole” David away from Daffney and then claimed to be carrying his child. When the pregnancy angle came out, the in-ring wars came to an end. Hancock would soon leave WCW and turn up in WWE as Stacy Keibler.

Daffney would then get into a program with Torrie Wilson, who was serving as Shane Douglas’ valet, at the time.
The “Scream Queen” gimmick came about after a bad landing. She let out a legitimate shriek and writer Ed Ferrera figured that since Daffney was trained as an actress, she could scream at will. The annoying habit of shrieking like a Banshee caught on and was later copied by Melina in the WWE. As WCW began to struggle, financially, talent cuts were put into place. Despite a huge following, creative really had no direction for Daffney to go and she was released in February of 2001, just a month before the company’s merger with the WWE.

Having a devil of a time

After being released from WCW, Daffney joined Dusty Rhodes’ Turnbuckle Championship Wrestling organization. She was there, mainly, for further training. She continued to use the Daffney persona until she left TCW. Once she hit the indy circuit, she went through a series of identity changes. In TNA, she went under her given first name, Shannon. She also became Shark Girl, a valet to Shark Boy. Her time in TNA was short-lived. She then moved on to the east coast indies, most notably Ring of Honor. It was there that she served as manager to the Second City Saints (C.M. Punk, Colt Cabana and Ace Steel). She adopted the punnish name of Lucy Furr (Lucifer) to go along with the Saints portion of the team name of Punk, Cabana and Steel.

She would stick with that name, along with Daffney, until she accepted an offer to go to the WWE’s training territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling. She was partnered with Aaron Stevens until December, 2003, when she was released. The reason for her release was never explained, though it was considered odd that she lasted less than six months with the company.

Retirement and Return

After her release from OVW, Shannon decided to walk away from wrestling. She even sold her wrestling boots to fellow OVW talent (and her roommate), Mickie James. Shannon took a job as a personal trainer in the Georgia area. Her plan was to contact some of the people she met in the Turner organization to try and reboot her acting career. That idea came to an end in February, 2006, when she accepted a job, under the ring name of Lucy Furr, for Women’s Extreme Wrestling. She was introduced to the group by Francine and Missy Hyatt, after posing for their racy website.

After a short stint as a manager, she moved to Alabama and worked as a wrestler, under the tutelage of Robert Fuller. Fuller called her his “Million Dollar Baby”. She would be pitted against El Mexicano for the NWA Birmingham Junior Heavyweight title, which she would win. After dropping the belt, she moved on to various Georgia independent promotions, working as both a ref and a manager/valet.

In 2007, Shannon showed up in Shimmer as both her Daffney and Shark Girl characters. She feuded with Ms. Chif for the better part of a year. Daffney/Shark Girl wanted to revert to her earlier character and prove she could become a star, once again.

The Psycho Governor

On June 5, 2008, Daffney, along with Amber O’Neal and Becky Bayless, were giving a guest shot on Impact. Daffney was chosen to battle Awesome Kong, during Kong’s open challenge. Daffney actually defeated Kong and looked to be on her way to a full-time return to wrestling. Suddenly, she disappeared.

In December, Shannon returned, playing Alaskan governor Sarah Palin. The resemblance was uncanny. “Palin” played upon the naivety of The Beautiful People (Angelina Love and Velvet Sky). Palin put the women through several vignettes of humiliation. It was eventually revealed that Palin was an fake, hired by Taylor Wilde and Roxxi. The Beautiful People snapped and attacked Palin, cutting her hair. The trauma of the assault pushed Palin over the edge and Daffney was re-born. Daffney began to attack Wilde and Roxxi, the women who placed her in the traumatic situation. The feud was derailed when Roxxi was released.

Daffney began to climb the rankings, by way of odd stipulation matches, such as the “Queen of the Cage” match. She also became associated with former ECW stars, Raven and Dr. Stevie (Richards). Daffney invented a new finisher called the Lobotomy (a swinging Perfectplex). She worked primarily gimmick matches, such as Monster’s Ball and the Match of 200 Tacks. Her appearances were sporadic. On the most recent episode of Impact, she faced off against Hamada, who was making her TNA debut. The two women had a brutal no-disqualification match that included tables and chairs. While Daffney came out on the losing end, she proved that she was one of the toughest women in professional wrestling.

In Conclusion:

Shannon Spruill has been called “Zombie Hot” and “Psycho Psexy”. She’s undergone numerous name changes, but the character (with the exception of the Sarah Palin gimmick) has always been the same. She’s been a solid performer on every promotion that she’s worked for. Her performance on Impact, against Hamada, was just another example of what an outstanding wrestler Daffney has become. After the match, Rick Cataldo ran out to attack Roxxie, as he was upset about losing the rights to the Beatdown Betties name. Annie Social came out to save her Beatdown Betties partner. Social said even though Roxxie has aspirations of winning the Spirit Championship and that both women are focusing on their single careers, the Beatdown Betties always have each others backs. Roxxie said the next time Cataldo and Roxxie square off, it will be a Loser-Leaves-WSU Match.
 

Amber O’Neal d. Annie Social
Many fans called this the second best match of the night and a show stealer, as the debuting Amber O’Neal tore it up with the always improving and in-your-face Annie Social.  These two had a long bout, that O’Neal eventually was able to win. Despite being welcomed to WSU by the WSU faithful, O’Neal blew off the fans.
 
Jessicka Havok & Hailey Hatred d. Ariel & Cindy Rogers
In what was supposed to be Havok/Hatred vs Pierce/Morrison, Havok & Hatred came to the ring and said Pierce canceled the match. Havok/Hatred put out an open challenge to anyone who would take them on, as Havok & Hatred said they were the best in the mid-west and came to WSU for the best competition. The returning Cindy Rogers answered the call and accepted the challenge, as Rogers introduced one of her real-life best friends, the debuting Ariel! Ariel said it was great to finally be in WSU and wanted to see what the best in the mid-west were all about.
 
In a grueling tag team match, Havok/Hatred were able to defeat these two single stars who have held multiple championships during their careers. After the match, Ariel & Rogers shook hands, signaling that despite the loss, the two remain allies in WSU.
 
Kylie Pierce d. Lea Morrison
Kylie Pierce came out to the ring with Lea and berated her. Pierce was upset that Morrison entered the Spirit Championship last week and snuck that title opportunity spot from her. Pierce said that Morrison was an embarrassment and that it was time for Pierce to teach her a lesson.
 
Pierce soundly defeated Morrison in a match that saw the teacher humiliate the student. Morrison’s confidence looks to have been broken by Pierce.
 
WSU Spirit Championship Match

In a wild brawl, this feud that has been going on for nearly a year, saw these two brawl into the streets of Boonton. These two tore each other up and spent more time out of the ring than in it! Eventually Latasha, who has been on the  losing end of this feud as of late, was able to pin Jana out of no-where. Jana flipped out after the match and it looks like we haven’t even scratched the surface between these two!
 
WSU Tag Team Championship Match

In another intense and electrifying match, these two teams went at it tooth and nail. However, when the referee was knocked down by Rain, Rain wanted to take a short-cut and wanted her new employee, Angel Orsini, to do the dirty work. Orsini was handed a chair by Rain to blast Brooke Carter with, but Orsini refused to do it, having a new found respect for Carter after their recent battles in August.  Rain flipped out that Orsini wasn’t listening and taking her orders, so she grabbed the chair and destroyed Brooke with it. Unfortunately for Rain, the referee saw Rain use the chair and DQ’d Rain & Orsini. Rain went ballistic and if you weren’t there, you will want to see the DVD for Rains post-match reaction where she went bonkers.
 
Missy Hyatt hosted the latest “MISSY’s MANOR”, which featured the Wedding Shower of Rick Cataldo & Sean Hanson. As  you can imagine, this got class-less real fast. Both exchanged gifts and Hanson even gave himself a gift- a bottle of sugary and feminine “Twizted Tea” which made the crowd chant alcoholic. Hanson announced that Cataldo/Cotton was official for the next show in a loser-leaves-WSU match. Hanson then changed the subject and said that even though he has had women in the northeast and New England areas, and perhaps even created a little mischief in his life, it was his father who was a homosexual, which in turn gave Hanson his homosexual genes.  Hanson said that he’s given into his homosexual urges and said it was finally time to give the fans what they wanted, by allowing the fans to watch them make out for the first time. This led to Missy Sampson coming out. Sampson said after what she went through this week (her father passed away) Hanson had s ome fucking balls to come out and say what he said. Missy said while Cotton/Cataldo was booked to be a loser-leaves match, there was another Loser-Leaves-WSU Match booked for the second taping, and announced that it would be Missy Sampson vs Sean Hanson, much to the delight of the crowd! Sampson said she was going to give Hanson a taste of what’s to come, but before she attacked Hanson, Sampson put on the Big Van Missy mask to a huge reaction, which led to Cataldo & Hanson getting out of Dodge!
 
WSU World Championship Match
No  Time-Limit Match
(c) Mercedes Martinez d. Nikki Roxx at the 35 Minute Mark
Mercedes Martinez is laying claim as being the best WSU World Champion of all-time. Coming off a historic 70 minute Iron-Woman match with Angel Orsini on 6/6, Martinez was pushed to the limit by Nikki Roxx here. This match was incredible, as both of these women know each other. After wrestling to a draw on 8/8, this match was made a No-Time Limit match to ensure there would be a winner.
 
This match saw counter after counter. We actually saw Martinez use Roxx’s BARBIE CRUSHER finisher on Roxx for a near-fall, which Roxx countered with by hitting Martinez’s signature BRAINBUSTER on Martinez for a near fall. However, after 35 minutes, Roxx got caught on the top rope. Martinez quickly saw the situation at hand and brainbustered Roxx from the top rope for the 1-2-3, which brought every fan to their feet. Another womens Match of the Year Candidate.
 
After the match, Rain & Orsini came out and attacked both Roxx & Martinez. Rain & Orsini beat both down, as Rain made it clear she wants the WSU Championship at any cost. However, Roxx & Martinez were able to fight them off. Martinez & Roxx then challenged Orsini/Rain to a tag team match at the second DVD taping. The war of words were fiery here and if you want pure emotion, unbridled fury and just maniacal rage, you will want to see what these two teams said to each other.
 
After a brief intermission, WSU returned with the second half of the show, with another DVD taping.
 
Jennifer Cruz d. Jana
In what may be the biggest upset in WSU all year, Cruz defeated perennial title contender, Jana in the middle of the ring. In Jana’s defense, Jana who previously defeated three women last week in the Spirit Championship Tournament with her Jana-Vice, had Cruz locked in the Jana Vice. That is when Latasha came out. Latasha distracted Jana, and Jana broke the hold, allowing Cruz to roll-up Jane from behind! Jana went completely bezerk after the match and it looks like that now Latasha is in Jana’s head as the tables have been turned in this feud.
 
Winner Guaranteed A Spirit Championship Match
Fatal Four Way Elimination Match
Ariel d. Kylie Pierce, Lea Morrison & Annie Social
The frustration between Pierce & Morrison reached a fever pitch in this match, when Morrison refused to lie down for Pierce. These two went at it hard in this match. Pierce was able to eliminate Annie Social by hook & crook, but then Morrison was able to defeat Pierce, in what set Pierce off big-time! Pierce attacked Morrison after being eliminated, which allowed Ariel, who said after the match that she didn’t want to win the match this way, to pick up the scraps.
 
Amber O’Neal d. Cindy Rogers
It seems that making a “fucking splash” in WSU would be an understatement for Amber O’Neal. After having a show-stealing match with Annie Social, these two turned it up and had a classic see-saw battle of a match. In the end Amber was able to get by Rogers, who some have speculated may have a bit ring-rust.
 
WSU Spirit Championship Match

Latasha went 2-0 on 8/22 and was able to continue her reign as Spirit Champion by defeating Amber in a hard-fought match. However, backstage WSU cameras caught Jana attacking Latasha as soon as Latasha got behind the curtain! Jana destroyed Latasha and left Latasha laying in bloody heap. While Latasha may have found it funny to laugh at Jana for losing to Jennifer Cruz earlier in the night, Jana made sure that Latasha wouldn’t have last laugh.
 
LOSER LEAVES WSU MATCH
Rick Cataldo d. Roxxie Cotton
In a match that has to be seen to be believed, Cataldo used his bag of tricks (and Hanson) to get by Cotton. Where Cotton goes from here is unknown. Cotton looked dejected after the match, perhaps realizing she would have to settle  going to weaker places where the competition isn’t that high as WSU. However, there were rumblings that Cotton planned on protesting to WSU considering Cataldo didn’t wrestle the match fair & square.
 
While celebrating Cataldo’s win, Big Van Missy ran out and we had our impromptu
 
LOSER LEAVES WSU MATCH
Big Van Missy d. Sean Hanson in less than 2 minutes
This was a complete kill-job as Big Van Missy dedicated this match to her recently deceased father. Missy destroyed Hanson and WSU fans finally got their wish – Sean Hanson will never wrestle in a WSU ring again!
 
Big Van Missy celebrated her win in the ring and what happened next was one of the most disgusting, humiliating and classless acts we’ve ever seen. Typing this up does not give you the proper image of what happened which is why we encourage you to see the DVD if you weren’t there.
 
Havok & Hatred came out and beat Big Van Missy to near-death. That is not an exaggeration or wrestling hyperbole.  Havok & Hatred said they would fucking beat Missy Sampson to death so she could join her dead father. That wasn’t even the worst of what they said, but in respect to Sampson and her recently deceased feather, we will not recap any more of what was said, only to say if you want to see why Havok & Hatred became the most hated people in WSU overnight, then get the DVD.
 
Not satisfied by hospitalizing Missy Sampson, Havok & Hatred turned their verbal assault onto Alicia & Brooke Carter. Havok & Hatred said Alicia will regret that she ever came out of retirement and called Carter a “rat”. Clearly, Havok & Hatred crossed the line and have no respect for anyone. Despite being new comers to WSU, Havok & Hatred have made it clear that they will step on the throats and stab anyone in the back if it satisfies them.
 
WSU Tag Team Match
Jessicka Havok & Hailey Hatred d. (c) Alicia & Brooke Carter to become NEW WSU Tag Team Champions
In a hard-hitting and fiercely fought war, Havok & Hatred were able to beat the champions to win the championships.  WSU has never seen a team like Havok/Hatred and after their actions on 8/22, they will become number 1 targets for many WSU stars. Carter was also purposely injured by Havok/Hatred during the match as Havok/Hatred have no respect or care in the world for anyone. One thing is for sure, on 10/3, Alicia & Carter will be amped up like never before when they take on Havok/Hatred in a rematch.
 
MAIN EVENT
Angel Orsini & Rain d. Nikki Roxx & WSU World Champion Mercedes Martinez
This was another dramatic match with many twists and turns, as a big story was told by the “Top 4″ in WSU. After 20 minutes, we saw Martinez going for a clothesline on Rain, only for Rain to duck the move and Roxx to be hit out of it.  With Roxx on the floor and Martinez temporarily startled, Rain capitalized and hit her patented implant DDT for the clean 1-2-3 on the WSU World Champion. This is the first time Martinez has been cleanly pinned in competition in her championship reign.
 
After the match, Orsini & Rain slowly watched the ring from the floor, as they knew that the best, in their minds, was yet to come. Roxx and Martinez got to their feet, with Roxx helping Martinez, as earlier we saw Martinez help Roxx to her feet. However, Roxx had other plans and destroyed Martinez with a barbie crusher! Orsini  & Rain hit the ring, and Rain beat up Martinez some more.
 
Rain introduced the newest stable in WSU, herself/Orsini/Roxx, clearly a group that no one could match power with, as Roxx has become Rain’s latest employee.  Rain said what the three have in common was that all three of them have been on/wrestled on TV, while Martinez just watches them on TV.
 
Rain told Orsini to finally destroy Martinez once and for all. Rain handed Orsini a steel chair, a chair Orsini would not use earlier in the show. Rain told Orsini to fucking do it now. Orsini was handed the chair, but instead of blasting Martinez, Rain got smashed with the chair!  Orsini then went head hunting on Nikki Roxx and Roxx left the ring.
 
With Roxx/Rain on the floor, Orsini helped Martinez up. Orsini then cut one of the most intense and realisitic speeches we’ve ever heard in WSU. MUST SEE DVD!
 
Orsini said that she built the WSU Championship up and while she knows she can’t get a shot at Martinez due to the Ironwoman match stipulation, she’d rather see a fighting champion than a cunt like Rain with the belt. Orsini said the WSU Championship is the most important championship in womens wrestling today and could not go thru with being Rain’s employee and seeing the belt treated as a prop or as a toy.
 
Orsini said that despite everything Martinez and herself have gone thru, Orsini has all the respect for Martinez in the world and more importantly respects the WSU World Championship and what that belt means. Orsini said she didn’t kill herself, giving up a year of her life as champion to see someone like Rain walk in and just try to weasel her way in as champion.
 
Martinez then grabbed the mic and backed up Orsini, giving a fiery speech about the WSU World Title and what it represents. Martinez says she knows Roxx is booked all over the world these days since she’s left TNA, but only in WSU will Roxx get the beating of her life. Martinez challenged Roxx to a match anywhere anytime, whether it’s on 10/3, at NWS, at ACE, CZW or wherever.
 
Orsini challenged Rain to a match on 10/3. Orsini made it clear that she’s beaten Rain before (Finals of 2009 J-Cup Tournament) and now will rip Rain from limb-to-limb.
 
As the show was coming to a close, and with Roxx/Rain in the back, the entire WSU locker room, sans Rain/Roxx, came to the ring with a birthday cake for Angel Orsini. Orsini, who’s 29th birthday is in two days (She says she’s 29, and WSUWrestling.com didn’t have the stones to challenge her on that claim, as we did not want the “Kiss of Death”) was sung happy birthday by WSU fans and the wrestlers.
