From comedians to politicians to musical performers to professional athletes, Monday Night Raw’s weekly guest hosts are some of past and present’s finest entertainers. The WWE Universe, therefore, can expect this trend to continue as more and more of the most popular celebrities are hopping aboard to serve as Raw special host.

Nov. 23, 2009: Jesse Ventura
This week, WWE Hall of Famer Jesse Ventura will take the reins from Hershey, Pa., on a special Thanksgiving three-hour presentation of Raw. The illustrious Superstar’s role comes just more than one week before the debut of Ventura’s new truTV series, Conspiracy Theory, which airs on Dec. 2 at 10 p.m. ET.

Nov. 30, 2009: Verne Troyer
Best known for playing Mini-Me in the Austin Powers comedy series, Verne Troyer will serve as guest host on Nov. 30 from Baltimore. One of the shortest yet largely recognizable men in the world, the actor has more than 15 years of television experience.

Dec. 7, 2009: Mark Cuban
Instead of humoring the NBA Universe with his infinite antics and making authoritative basketball decisions for one night, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban will spend time delegating responsibility to WWE Superstars when he hosts Raw on Dec. 7 from Dallas.

Dec. 14, 2009: Dennis Miller
Comedian and radio talk show host Dennis Miller, meanwhile, will serve as the host of the 2009 Slammy Awards during a special three-hour presentation of Raw on Dec. 14 from Corpus Christi, Texas. The five-time Emmy award-winning comic is renowned for his improvisations and acerbic humor about pop culture and politics.

Be sure to tune in every Monday night when the biggest stars from all over the world take over as Raw’s special guest host.

ECW (11/17) Extreme Exam
Our resident philosopher looks at a Homecoming edition of ECW

It was a reunion show, on many levels, this week. ECW came from the home of Extreme, Philadelphia. Also, a former top star in ECW returned home for a one-night stand. In addition, Paul Burchill put his and his sisters’ careers on the line against the mask of The Hurricane.

This Week’s Episode: Sometimes you Can go home again.

C.M. Punk stepped in front of the ECW logo. He got a monster boo from the crowd. Punk talked about getting his start in ECW before becoming a three-time World champion. Punk expected a long, loud standing ovation, the loudest in ECW history. Don’t hold your breath, kid.

The main event was announced: C.M Punk and William Regal v Christian and R-Truth. After that, Zack Ryder and Rosa Mendes walked out together. Rosa and Zack took their own microphones. Zack wanted to introduce the newest Diva, Rosa. Zack just oozed about how great Rosa was. Rosa then went onto a bizarre shopping story that bored everyone, even Zack. Zack wanted Rosa in his corner for his rematch against Shelton Benjamin. Rosa went on another rambling story about Mexican food. Jeez.

Shelton Benjamin then came out to shut the Latina Loudmouth’s weird ramblings. Shelton said he would rather put Zack in the corner and wrestle Rosa. Zack got ticked off. Shelton told Zack he should change his name to “Black and Decker” because he was nothing more than a power tool. Oh, snap. Zack said he didn’t want to fight Shelton, right now. Zack said not to disrespect his girl. Zack then popped Zack and he and Rosa left the ring. Shelton grinned at Zack. Zack better be really worried.

Paul Burchill came out with his sister, Katie Lea Burchill. It was Mask v Career in this battle. Katie looked nervous. ECW ran Hurricane’s great intro. The Emerald Knight emerged from the darkness to bring his brand of justice to the ring.

The Hurricane d Paul Burchill
Mask v Career Match

The Finish:

The two started throwing hard fists. Paul with a kick to the ribs and a bounce off the ropes. Hurricane caught him with the Hurri-Press (Thesz Press). Paul reversed an Irish Whip but took a Back Elbow to the kisser. Hurricane whipped Paul to the corner and then came off the ropes with a Flying Clothesline. Hurricane could only get a two count. Hurricane tried for his Eye of the Hurricane finisher but Paul powered out and hit a off-center Pele Kick. hurricane barely kicked out and Paul screamed in frustration. Hurricane tried, again, for the Eye of the Hurricane but Paul twisted around into a Northern Lights Bridging Suplex for a two plus. Paul called for Katie Lea to help him. Paul sent Hurricane to the corner but got blasted as he charged in. Hurricane mounted the ropes for a Hurancanrana. Paul still kicked out at two. Katie Lea distracted Hurricane, which allowed Paul to shove the masked man into the corner. Paul Jack Hammered Hurricane to the canvas but only got a two count. Paul just couldn’t believe it. Paul set for the Dangerous Buster but Hurricane Floated Over. Hurricane unleashed the Eye of the Hurricane but couldn’t make the pin. When he did, Paul kicked out. Hurricane went to the top rope but got caught. Paul punched away and then climbed the ropes, screaming “I Got Him!”. Hurricane blocked Paul and then hit a Top Rope Flying, Spinning Neckbreaker!

Grade: A

Katie Lea was in total shock as the reality sunk in about her having to leave ECW, along with her brother. Katie seethed at her sibling. The crowd stated singing “Nah Nah Nah Nah Hey Hey Good-bye”. Katie Lea cried as Paul told her that he was sorry.

Jay’s Thoughts: I can only hope that The Burchills get to move over to Raw. Smackdown may have won the honor of being the Top Brand at Bragging Rights, but it still feels like a B-level show. Katie Lea deserves a chance to do something other than play valet to her “brother”.

In the back, Tiffany talked with C.M. Punk. Punk criticized Tiffany for her drinking. Tiffany said she wasn’t a prude. Tiffany told Punk to loosen up and try being a human being. Punk was not impressed.

Lance…sorry…Vance Archer came out for another squash. This week’s victim was Johnny Andrews.

Vance Archer d Johnny Andrews

Vance slapped the taste out of his victim’s mouth and then Power Whipped him into the corner. Vance shoved Johnny into the ring post. Vance slid out of the ring and kicked at Johnny. Vance got back in the ring and punched away at his opponent. Vance hit his version of a Spinning Face Plant. Vance then finished off his poor foe with the Inverted Power Driver DDT.

Grade: C

Jay’s Thoughts: Vance is going to end up in mid-card Hell, I just know it. He just doesn’t have the right feel to become a top star in the WWE. He’ll likely be back in TNA before Wrestlemania.

Josh Mathews and Byron Saxton talked about Survivor Series. Byron pushed how unpredictable the yearly PPV always is. They then ran down the card.

Christian was lacing up his boots when Punk showed up. They talked about both holding the ECW title. Christian wanted to know if Punk was allowed to hold hands with a girl. Christian said Punk wasn’t straight-edged, he was a nerd. Punk got upset at the insult. Punk bragged about being a three-time World champion. Christian reminded Punk that Punk was a champion, while Christian still was. ECW went to break.

Josh sent it to another look at the relationship between the WWE and MSG (Madison Square Garden).

C.M. Punk came out for the main event. He got a less than warm reaction from the Philly crowd. He was joined by his partner, William Regal. It seems strange to see him team with Regal, considering Regal’s past Wellness Program issues. I’m just saying… The two shook hands as Christian’s theme rang out. Christian showed respect to his title by actually wearing the strap. He was joined by the rapmaster of the WWE, R-Truth.

William Regal and C.M. Punk d Christian and R-Truth

The Finish:

Christian tagged in and went to town on Punk. Christian came off the ropes with a Fore-arm Smash and then ran Punk into the corner. Christian nailed the Tornado DDT. Christian turned to pop Regal. Christian with the Morningstar. Christian tried for the KillSwitch, which Punk reversed into a Go-To-Sleep attempt. Christian got free from that and tried for the KillSwitch, again. Punk powered out and shoved Christian to the corner. Punk hit the Elevator Knee on the ECW Champ. Punk tried for the Running Bulldog but Christian stopped and hit the Slop Drop. Regal prevented the pin. R-Truth rushed in and took out Regal with fists and a Dropkick. Christian went for the KillSwitch but Regal nailed a Knee Trembler on the trapped Christian. Punk connected with the GTS to take the win for his team.

Grade: A-

Jay’s Thoughts: Could Punk be heading “home” to ECW? Punk v Christian for the ECW title would definitely raise the interest of fans. Punk would have to see that as a backwards step. ECW really needs a revamping of the top stars. WWE should maybe consider a bi-annual Draft.

Final Grade: B

Final Thoughts: The Burchills are gone. Sheamus is gone. Tyler Reks hasn’t been seen in months on the Black Brand. The WWE couldn’t try harder to kill ECW if they used a machine gun. I really think it’s time for ECW to combine with FCW. When Superstars gets a bigger push than ECW, something is seriously wrong. ECW is turning into a serious joke, which is sad for the poor guys who are doing their best to make the program work.

The Katz Files – Arnie Katz
My Turning Point Preview & Predictions!
The Kingfish Arnie Katz breaks out the crystal ball to get you ready for TNA’s November pay per view, Turning Point.

Turning Point, coming in the wake of Bound for Glory and a week before WWE’s Survivor Series, is not going to be a major show. That’s especially true this year, with Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff waiting in the wings to assume (apparently) creative control as of the next set of tapings.

The knowledge that change is coming actually adds a little life to this show. TNA probably expects to break continuity when the new guys take over, so they could do about anything.

And you have to wonder how a couple of seemingly marked men, Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara, will choose to book what might be their last major TNA event.

Let’s look at the card, match by match, and see what we can expect at Turning Point….

Team 3D & Rhino vs. Matt Morgan, Hernandez & D’Angelo Dinero
The Story: Rhino claims there’s a conspiracy and now, suddenly, Team 3D is buying it. This match pits Ray, Devon and the War Machine against three of TNA’s rising stars.

My Prediction: This match is something of a mystery. It is unclear why Dinero is aligned with the two babyfaces and why TNA gas set up this mini-cluster schmazz. The young guys need to win, or at least not lose. One possible way is that Rhino could go nuts and get his team disqualified. The virtually promised that The Pope would not turn traitor. One viable scenario would be to have Ray pull Rhino off someone for using excessive force, only to leave himself open for a pin, which Dinero would execute. This, in turn, would cause friction between Dinero and the two faces,
Predicted Grade: B

Bobby Lashley vs. Scott Steiner
The Story: Scott Steiner has conceived a mad, delusional lust for Lashley’s wife Crystal. They both plan to take out their mutual hatred in the ring.

My Prediction: Bobby Lashley won’t win this match. That may seem incredible, but consider this: the feud ends when Lashley wins. It would be wasteful to do that, so Lashley must look like he could win after dominating the match, but a distraction involving Crystal will either get him pinned or cause him to be disqualified. The only real alternative I see is the referee disqualifying Steiner when he lays hands on Crystal. That’s still not what I would call a real, convincing win, though.
Predicted Grade: B-

British Invasion vs. Beer Money Inc. vs. The Motor City Machine Guns
TNA World Tag Title Championship
Triple Threat Match
The Story: The re-emergent Machine Guns, having veered to the babyface, have taken dead aim at the TNS tag team title. Beer Money wants the belts, too, and earned their way into this match with a non-title victory over the British Invasion on iMPACT.

My Prediction: The Guns sorely need a title run and this could be the time they get it. They would then battle the British Invasion and, as the true tweeners they are, could also fight Beer Money. (Or Beer Money could try to revert to heels.)
Predicted Grade: A-

Tara vs. Awesome Kong
Six Sides of Steel Cage Match
The Story: Whether they were teamed or opposing each other, Tara and Awesome Kong have never gotten along very well. Both women have designs on ODB’s Knockout Championship, which has only intensified the rivalry. Recently, Kong has crashed Tara’s matches, treating Tara and sometimes even her opponent most rudely. They’re inside the cage, one against one.

My Prediction: There are so many possibilities, a lot of them pretty bad. For instance, having Tara worry about what Raisha Saeed or Alissa Flash or Someone Else is doing with that spider outside the cage and lose the match is totally unacceptable. Awesome Kong needs a quality win and this match should provide it.
Predicted Grade: B+

Amazing Red vs. Homicide
X-Division Championship
The Story: Homicide has harassed Amazing Red since the sensational flyer won the belt from Samoa Joe. The time for hit-and-run attacks and gang-style beatdowns is past. Now, two of the most athletic, acrobatic wrestlers will settle the core inside the ring.

My Prediction: This could be the show’s most exciting match. Amazing Red will have to overcome some interference from World Elite, but he is likely to go back to the dressing room with the strap. A DQ victory in which Bashir and Kioshi join Homicide is possible, but I think they’ll give Red a clean win in a hard=fought match..
Predicted Grade: A

ODB & Taylor Wilde & Sarita vs. The Beautiful People
All Knockout Titles on the Line Match
The Story: Taylor Wilde and Sarita have successfully defended their recently won tag team title against The Beautiful People, but this time TNA’s bad girls will get to demonstrate their group’s full ability. Of course, the tag champs have an ally, too, in the Knockout Champion, ODB. The unique feature of the match is that the titles are all up for grabs. A title-holder who gets pinned will no longer have the gold.

My Prediction: Once this stip is in place, there’s got to be some expectation that someone will lose a title. Of course, as veteran wrestling fans know, that can be a signal that everybody will keep their titles. My prediction is that The Beautiful People will emerge with the tag team championship. There are many possible scenarios, but I believe it will be something like ODB gets sprayed in the face and Sarita tries to go to her aid. This leaves the Latina open to attack and she gets pinned.
Predicted Grade: B-

Kurt Angle vs. Desmond Wolfe
The Story: Wolfe, a newcomer to TNA, as vowed to replace Kurt Angle. And if that means putting him out of commission, the Howler is not afraid to do that, too. The Former Olympian says he won’t let anyone make a reputation at his expense. That’s sure to be a volatile combination!

My Prediction: This is an intriguing match-up, because it doesn’t seem like either man can take a loss. Wolfe is new and Angle’s status would suffer if he took a loss to someone who just got to TNA. That points to an inconclusive result. A Double Count-Out would work well, since it would also set up the next match in the series.
Predicted Grade: B+

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe vs. Daniels
TNA World Championship Match
The Story: Samoa Joe has cleverly undermined the friendship between Styles and Daniels. His attempt to set them against each other has, at the very least, sown the seeds of mistrust. That means they won’t be ganging up on Joe, whose size and power could be a decisive advantage in this free for all for TNA’s top title.

My Prediction: Samoa Joe will prevent Daniels from winning the title, but the Fallen Angel and Styles will be set for a program. The Phenomenal One will retain the championship.
Predicted Grade: A

Predicted Grade for Turning Point: B

That’s all for today! I’ll be back on Monday with my recap and analysis of Turning Point on Monday. Hope you’ll join me then – and, please, bring your friends.

ECW (11/10) Extreme Examination
Our resident philosopher looks at the pond-jumping edition of ECW

William Regal was home in England for his final shot at the ECW title. He was joined by several of the top stars of the Tuesday Night Delight.

The show opened with a touching tribute to the troops. I grew up in a military family. My grandfather and step-father both served this great country of ours. Health issues kept me from joining them in service but I always support those who lay their lives on the line for their beliefs and their country.

Tony Atlas came out to introduce Abraham Washington for the Abraham Washington Show. Abe came out to talk with Yoshi Tatsu. The crowd was dead for the annoying talk show host, at least at first. They started booing when he began to speak. Tony mentioned how the people in England talked funny. Abe then made fun of the people’s teeth. The crowd were both irritated and bored with the whole segment. Abe then called out Yoshi Tatsu. Yoshi was in a suit and tie. Yoshi mentioned that his English was not very good, but he was nervous. They got into that silly “Thank You” back and forth thing. Abe wanted to know who Yoshi thought would win. Yoshi said Christian would retain his title, despite Regal being really tough. Yoshi called Abe “Chris Tucker” which annoyed Abe. Yoshi made fun of Tony’s goofy laugh. Abe said only he got to make fun of Tony. Abe ended the painful segment and left with Tony.

Segment Grade: D-

Jay’s Thoughts: I didn’t think Abe could get any worse. He flubbed more lines that a junior high drama student. Rather pathetic.

ECW looked at Regal’s desire for the ECW title. Regal, along with Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson, made Christian’s life pure Hell over the past few weeks.. Tonight’s match was Regal’s last shot at gaining the platinum and leather strap.

Paul and Katie Lea Burchill came out for the opening match. Next week, Burchill will face The Hurricane. If Burchill loses, he and Katie Lea will leave ECW. If he wins, Hurricane must unmask. This week, Burchill faced Goldust.

Goldust d Paul Burchill

The Finish:

Goldust worked over Paul’s knee to get free. Paul immediately went back to work on the ribs. The crowd was getting bored, again. Paul stomped on the ribs. Goldust began to punch away at Paul and dropped him with the Goldustin Uppercut. Goldust hit a pair of Clotheslines and set for his Bulldog. Paul shoved out of the move and Goldust landed awkwardly. Paul hit a Running Field Goal on Goldust’s ribs. Suddenly, Hurricane’s music rang out. The Emerald Knight rushed to the ring. The distraction allowed Goldust to hit his Final Cut finisher on Burchill.

Grade: B+

Jay’s Thoughts: I’m wondering if the WWE is planning a union between Paul Burchill and Drew McIntyre on Smackdown. I can’t imagine that they would unmask Hurricane.

ECW looked at the issues between Zack Ryder and Shelton Benjamin. Zack was distracted by Rosa Mendes. Zack and Shelton will square off on Superstars. Zack ran into Rosa, in the back. Rosa started rambling about her abilities. Zack said he liked her and couldn’t stop staring at her. She invited him to come out to the ring with him. Zack went into a fantasy vision of himself and Rosa getting all romantic and skipping backstage. He had a silly grin on his face as ECW went to break.

Regal chatted with Tiffany in the backstage area. Regal wanted to clear the air with the GM because he got a title shot without her knowledge. Tiffany was ready for a fresh start, whether Regal won the title or not.

Vance Archer stomped down to the ring. The former Lance Hoyt had a near demonic grin on his face. His opponent was local guy, Jason Blackwell.

Vance Archer d Jason Blackwell

Vance cut a quick little promo threatening his opponent. Vance threw Jason to the mat and kicked Jason. Vance with a Clothesline. Jason got a shot to the face and grabbed a Headlock. Vance threw the kid to the mat and then picked him up for a Spinning move that was a cross between and F5 and a Chokeslam. Vance stomped the kid’s head and choked him in the corner with the boot. Vance with a Rolling Belly to Belly Suplex. Vance hit his Powerspin Inverted DDT.

Grade: B

Jay’s Thoughts: I have a really bad feeling that Archer is going to end up alongside Matt Morgan, Test, Berserker, Mike Knox and a dozen more grapplers that just stayed at mid-card status. I don’t see him ever taking the ECW title and doubt seriously if he’d get a run at any of the four other singles titles, either. His best shot is to find himself a partner and get set to go after tag team gold.

Christian walked backstage. He would defend his title…next.

William Regal got a respectful pop from the crowd. Some booed him but many more cheered for their countryman. Just a fun little trivia fact…William Regal did a bit of acting not far from Sheffield. He played a German officer in a couple of episodes of the long-running British Comedy “Allo Allo”. He was in the 8th season under his given name, Darrin Mathews. Regal just grinned at the love from his fans. He then went back into character and scowled. Christian then came out to screams from his British Peeps.

Christian d William Regal
ECW Championship Match

The Finish:

Christian rallied the crowd and hit the Slider Elbow Drop on Regal. Regal kicked out of the pin at two. Christian ran Regal into the corner and tried for the Tornado DDT. Regal blocked it and shoved Christian off the top rope. Christian fell to the outside. Christian fought his way back into the ring and then took down Regal with a middle rope Missile Dropkick. Christian then went back to the corner and hit a top rope version of the Missile Dropkick. Regal still managed to kick out. Christian went for a second KillSwitch but Regal spun around and decked Christian. The count seemed a tad slow. Regal missed with the Knee Trembler but came back around and nailed a weaker version. Christian kicked out at 2 and a half Christian went for another KillSwitch but Regal converted it into the Regal Stretch. Christian was able to break the hold and Dropkick Regal. Regal sat on the top turnbuckle and waited for Regal to get up. Christian hit the Morningstar (Spinning European Uppercut) to drop Regal onto his pompous posterior. Christian went for a third KillSwitch but Regal turned it into an Exploder Suplex. Regal set for the Knee Trembler. Christian avoided it and finally pulled the KillSwitch to retain his title.

Grade: A

Jay’s Thoughts: So, where the heck does William Regal go from here? I have to imagine that he will turn to full time management. There is a possibility that he could pull off a coup and take over for Tiffany. I would have almost bet my pitbull, Molly, that Regal was going to take the strap, only to drop it to Tatsu or Ryder. I personally think it was bad booking. The match, however, was phenominal. Both men were allowed to show just how good they are. The finish felt a touch weak, which is which I knocked a half point off my grade.

Final Grade: B

Final Thoughts: I’ve dissed Abe Washington to death, so let’s not go there. I want to talk about the action. One word…solid. The main event was given plenty of time. Burchill and Goldust really gave a good showing, as well. I’m also glad to hear that several ECW stars will be in action at Survivor Series. After the slap in the face from Bragging Rights, it’s nice to see everyone get to play.

Peace

Nobody Asked Me , But…
The Kingfish Arnie Katz continues a “Katz Files” tradition with answers to some ticklish questions that no one asked him and some observations about things that stuck in his mind as he watched a whole lot of wrestling..

I was watching wrestling this week and Nobody Asked Me, But…

… Shouldn’t whomever came up with the lame Chavo-vs.-Hatton fight deserve a rap on the knuckles for spoiling an otherwise pretty decent “guest host” shot on the 11/9 EAW from Sheffield, UK? The ex-champion stirred the crowd and, in the opening scene of the show, insured that fans would not cheering Chris Jericho and Big Show

… Doesn’t it seem strange that Hulk Hogan didn’t appear on the 11/5 iMPACT in any way? Talk about an inconsistent push! Even though Hogan may well have been concentrating on hawking his book, he could’ve done a remote, another pre-taped interview or even a telephone conversation.

… Isn’t it pretty arrogant for WWE to increase the price of its pay per view? The decision to ax the 13th pay per view of the year and make up the difference in revenue at the expense of the fans is a particularly noxious move in a period of rampant unemployment and forced belt-tightening. His company, which has grown fat on the support of its fans, might have considered that before just grabbing for the bucks. Raising prices when the product is weak, as it is now, is probably not the best idea, either.

… Did something happen to all the calendars at TNA headquarters? Just in case they don’t know, it is currently 2009, not 1989.

… Hasn’t Superstars built up nicely? The last rating was 1.8, which is both respectable and higher than any episode of iMPACT.

… Is Sheamus the whitest man in the world? He did a good job riling up the crowd, which might otherwise backed him as a favorite son.” His squash match would’ve been a tiny bit more impressive, though, if they had mentioned the name of the guy he beat from turnbuckle to turnbuckle.

… Did you notice that iMPACT’s rating went down for the 11/15 show? Some may argue that this occurred because Hulk Hogan wasn’t on the program. Another way of looking at it, though, is that a mere week after all the hoopla, Hogan has not attracted new viewers.

.. Wasn’t it a “feel good” moment when Evan Bourne ended Jack Swagger’s winning streak? Now we don’t have to listen to the “no defeats until the end of the year” stuff every week on RAW.

That’s all for today. I’ll be back tomorrow with a fresh installment of the Internet’s fastest-rising wrestling column. I hope you’ll join me then – and, please, bring your friends.

ECW (1/3) Extreme Exam!
Our resident philosopher looks at an action packed hour of ECW.

ECW unveiled Sheamus’s replacement on the roster. (He’s a transplant from TNA by way of FCW). William Regal also made another bid to earn a title shot.

This Week’s Episode: Sharp as an Archer’s arrow

The show opened with highlights of Christian v Yoshi Tatsu, from last week. Tatsu really came close to taking the title. The match was filled with great moves and the crowd was on their feet for the whole match. After the match, William Regal had Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson take out Christian.

Speaking of Christian, the champ stormed down to the ring. He was not a happy camper. He didn’t even recognize his fans, like he normally would. he called for the stick. Christian demanded that Regal come to the ring, immediately. Regal made Christian wait. Christian decided to go looking for the leader of the Ruthless Roundtable. He was stopped by Tiffany, ECW’s General Manager. She strolled down to the ring as her annoying music blared. Tiffany said she owed Christian an apology. Tiffany wanted to handle this situation, since Regal’s actions were because she wouldn’t give him a title shot. Tiffany tried to explain that if Christian gave Regal a title shot, he would be playing into Regal’s hands. Christian said he didn’t care.

Regal, Kozlov and Jackson then strolled from the back. Christian urged Regal to come to the ring. Regal wanted to know why he should give Christian what he wanted? Regal wanted to know if Christian would put the ECW title on the line. Christian was ready to scrap his other match to face Regal. Christian reminded Tiffany that he was in the same arena where he won his first ECW title. Regal refused to face Christian, right then. Regal said he would only face Christian, on his terms. Regal wanted to face Christian, next week, in England. Christian said he would see “Bill” in England, next week. Tiffany said Kozlov and Jackson would be banned from ringside. Tiffany then told Regal he would fight, next. Christian waited in the ring. He drilled Regal with a Baseball Slide Dropkick to the chest. ECW went to break.

Regal was nursing a sore neck as ECW returned. His opponent was Goldust. The Bizarre One got a huge pop as he arrived.

William Regal d Goldust

Goldust danced around to throw Regal off his game. The two locked up and moved to the ropes. Goldust and Regal exchanged fists, with Goldust coming out on top. The two fought out to the floor, where Goldust dropped Regal. They got back in the ring and punched away. Regal threw Goldust to the outside and they started fighting on the floor, again. Goldust rolled Regal into the ring and hit an Atomic Drop. Goldust mounted the turnbuckles and punched away. regal came back and threw Goldust into the corner and punched away. Regal Irish Whipped Goldust to the corner and hit a Fore-arm Shiver to drop Goldust. Regal slapped on a Rear Chin Lock. Goldust turned and got to his feet. he punched at the ribs and hit the Goldustin Uppercut. He hit Running Clotheslines on Regal but ate a boot. Goldust hit a weak Powerslam. Goldust nailed a Bulldog and went for a Splash. When he missed, Regal nailed the Knee Trembler to take the win.

Grade: B-

Jay’s Thoughts: ECW goes to England, next week? I smell a serious title switch. It could open the door for Yoshi Tatsu to follow up with a title shot to gain his first gold.

Rosa Mendes chatted with Zack Ryder. Zack was smitten with the lovely Latina. ECW went to break.

Rosa was introduced as the guest ring announcer. Rosa rambled about practicing her ring announce duties. She called out Zack Ryder, after a cameraman told her to get on with it. Rosa was absolutely gorgeous, other than her legs are way too thin. She then introduced Shelton Benjamin

Shelton Benjamin d Zack Ryder

The Finish:

Shelton got to his feet but Zack used a Back Heel Trip to take Shelton back down. Shelton worked over the ribs to get free. The two got into a slugfest. Shelton came out on top in that little exchange. Shelton with the Back Body Drop and an Irish Whip. Shelton nailed the Stinger Splash and sent Zack to the ropes. Zack got a shot in on Shelton but then fell victim to the Belly to Belly Overhead Suplex. They ended up on the floor, again. Zack flipped Shelton into the ring but stopped to stare at Rosa. That let Shelton hit Paydirt on the distracted Zack Ryder.

Grade: B

Jay’s Thoughts: I have to think this match was a thank you to Shelton for making Sheamus look good in the last few weeks. I’m hoping he finally gets brought up to championship matches.

Paul and Katie Lea Burchill waited in the ring for The Hurricane. Hurricane’s cool intro ran and the Emerald Knight same tot he ring with his new green and black kendo stick. Hurricane got a Halloween shot at Katie Lea. Paul was tired of the fraud that Hurricane put over on the fans. Hurricane said the fans loved to fly and “chicks dig super-hero types”. Paul had a proposal to end it all. If Paul wins, Hurricane will unmask. If Hurricane wins, Paul and Katie Lea will leave ECW. Hurricane accepted with a modified Green Lantern rhyme.

Jay’s Thoughts: So where will the Burchills go when they lose? (Which they will).

In the back, Tony Atlas and Abraham Washington grumbled about William Regal tearing up his Rent-a-Center furniture, last week. They started talking about the new set they waned from Tiffany. The newest ECW superstar, Vance Archer (Lance Hoyt/Rock), walked past Washington and Atlas. Tiffany said Archer was “intense”.

The Raw Rebound looked at all the fun and silliness of the Osbournes on Raw. They brought out Great Khali for a segment called Raw’s Got Talent. Chris Masters flexing pecs thing was the funniest darn thing I have seen on wrestling in years. My daughter, Jess, was impressed.

Vance Archer d Logan Jones

Vance grinned/smirked at his victim. Archer shoved Logan out of the ring. Jones, like Triple H, was trained by the late, great Killer Kowalski. It didn’t help him much against Vance. Vance slapped Logan and then hit a Rolling Hip Toss/Slam combo. Vance took the win with a Inverted Powerspin DDT (The Final Touch).

Grade: Big D, actually a solid B

Jay’s Thoughts: The long hair did wonders for Lance/Vance. He sure as heck ain’t no pretty boy. I hope he doesn’t get lost in the shuffle like he did in TNA, but I kind of expect it to happen.

The main event was next. Kozlov and Jackson would face Christian and Yoshi.

The Ruthless Roundtable waited in the ring for the ECW champ and the Japanese Superstar. Christian came out, wearing his title belt. This time, he showed love to his “peeps”. Christian waited at the base of the ring for his partner, Yoshi.

Christian and Yoshi Tatsu d Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson

The Finish:

Kozlov with the Locked Arm Headbutt. Kozlov with the Belly to Belly Suplex. Jackson tagged back in and pounded the ribs. Jackson slapped on a different version of the Double Underhook. Jackson pounded Yoshi in the back of the head. Jackson threw Yoshi into the corner but missed the Splash. Yoshi crawled to his corner and brought in Captain Charisma. Christian went after Kozlov with hard fists to the head. Kozlov Irish Whipped Christian to the corner but ate a boot on the run-in. Christian with the Morningstar (Flying European Uppercut off the middle ropes). Christian Dropkicked Jackson off the apron. Christian scampered up the turnbuckles but got caught. Kozlov threw Christian into the ring. Kozlov with a Gut Wrench into a Body Vise. Christian slipped free and put Kozlov down with the Slop Drop. Jackson prevented the pin. Yoshi rushed in and joined Christian in an attack on Jackson. They flipped him out of the ring and to the floor. Yoshi then hit a Flying Crossbody over the top rope, onto Jackson. Back in the ring, Kozlov used a Fallaway Slam on Christian. Kozlov missed a Charge into the corner. Christian went to the corner for a Tornado DDT. Christian pulled the KillSwitch to take the win for the team.

Grade: B

William Regal rushed the ring and tried to Pearl Harbor Christian. It led to a serious slugfest between the two. Jackson then jumped Christian from behind. Jackson stomped on Christian. Christian was dragged into the ring post. His ribs hit the steel. Regal then locked in the Regal Stretch, on the floor. Regal shrieked like a Banshee as he twisted the ECW Champ’s body.

Jay’s Thoughts: Did ECW just kill all possible momentum with Kozlov and Jackson? Those two powerhouses were upstaged by a team that is almost half their size. This is why Kozlov bombed over on Smackdown. To think, I was looking forward to Kozlov/Jackson v JeriShow. Never mind.

Final Grade: B

Final Thoughts: So Regal gets yet another shot at the title. Tyler Reks is still MIA. Sheamus leaves and Archer becomes teh latest Goldberg wannabe. Yes, it’s pretty much status quo in the Land of Make Believe err.. Extreme.I’m wondering how ECW will get left out of Survivor Series. It’s going to happen. I’d just about bet the farm on it.

Sunset Flip Presents: Survivor Series

It is that time of the week again. Another week, another edition of Sunset Flip Presents. I’m Jim Boy Star and I hope everyone had a great Halloween.

This week, I will take a look at Survivor Series. Not the current card of this year’s Survivor Series, but the event as a whole.

Survivor Series was a concept heavily influenced by elimination tag team matches. However, in recent times, the tag matches do not seem to be a focus.

I am going to be honest with everyone. I am not “IN LOVE” with the tag team elimination concept but I understand most people are. I certainly don’t hate the concept and also realize that it makes the PPV that much more unique compared to the other 12+ PPVs a year.

One of my favorite Survivor Series ideas was apparently what was originally scheduled for Bragging Rights. It was supposed to be matches throughout the night, where the winners of the matches would be added in the big Raw vs Smackdown tag team match. I liked this idea. Instead, we just got a 7 on 7 non elimination tag team match with no qualifiers.

That is right, we did not get that cool idea, instead we got a 60 minute Ironman match that I must say, anyone, under that format, could pull that off. But that’s another story for another column, maybe even next week’s column.

Another idea that was used in the past was the Wildcard match. This is a survivor series match, but “randomly” put people together. It was only done once before and although one guess would the reason it only happened one time is because it was terrible, I would like to see it happen.

We already have two triple threat matches for the WWE Title and World Heavyweight Championships. Some have said, to keep with the Survivor Series theme, they should make it elimination. While I’m not against it, I’m not really for it either. I feel that if they do that there may not be any elimination matches. In WWE’s mind, they keep with the Survivor Series theme by doing this and are not required to do anything else. And for those that say I am wrong, WWE has been making terrible decisions across the board and this would actually make WWE consistent.

The ECW (10/27) Extreme Exam
Our resident philosopher takes a look at an exciting edition of the Tuesday Night Delight, ECW

Sheamus made his final appearance on ECW. The main event had Christian defend his ECW title against Yoshi Tatsu.

ECW debuted a new announce team, this week. Matt Striker has taken over for Jim Ross on Smackdown, at least for the time being. JR has had another severe attack of his Bell’s Palsy and is unable to work the announce table. I want to send out my very best wishes to the Hall of Famer for a speedy recovery.

Tony Atlas was introduced by Lauren, the new ring announcer. Tony then brought out (sigh) Abraham Washington and The Abraham Washington Show. Abraham had Tiffany as his special guest. The crowd was overly hostile of Abe. Abe finally accepted that there were “haters” in the crowd. Abe said he would shut his mouth, this week. Tony started laughing. Abe threatened to fire Tony. Abe then brought out Tiffany to new music and video package. Abe started flirting with Tiffany, as did Tony. Abe talked about the criticism that Tiffany has received by ECW being left out of Bragging Rights. She countered that several members of Team Raw and Team Smackdown got their first break on ECW, including John Morrison and Kofi Kingston. Abe asked about Sheamus leaving ECW. Tiffany said she didn’t want anyone in ECW that didn’t want to be there. She said Sheamus would have one final match against Shelton Benjamin before leaving.

As Abe started to talk about Tiffany’s banged up arm, William Regal and the Ruthless Roundtable came out. Regal pleaded for another title shot. Tiffany said her answer has not changed, it was still no. Regal said he was losing his temper with her. Tiffany said Regal might never get another title shot. She dismissed him and left the set. Regal snapped and completely trashed the Abraham Washington set. Regal screamed like a maniac as he tossed furniture around.

Segment Grade: D

Jay’s Thoughts: Why the heck did ECW just waste so much time with a segment that went absolutely nowhere? Poor Tyler Reks and Zack Ryder have to take the night off so this no-talent Arsentio wanna-be can rattle off his boring tripe. I thought ECW got rid of that albatross.

Josh Mathews introduced his new announcing partner, Byron Sexton. Byron has been working down in FCW, recently. Byron has a feel of a young Jonathan Coachman. They sent it to a video package about Yoshi Tatsu.

Sheamus arrived for his final ECW match. The crowd was less than pleasant towards the Celtic Warrior. ECW looked at Shelton Benjamin’s attack on Sheamus, last week. Savannah chatted with Shelton before he went to the ring. Shelton was offended about Sheamus’ comments that he was mediocre. Shelton thought, at first, that Sheamus might be right. After rethinking it, Shelton felt that Sheamus was nothing but a coward. Shelton was determined to give Sheamus a parting gift. Shelton then arrived for the battle.

Sheamus d Shelton Benjamin

The Finish:

Sheamus cinched in a variation of the Rear Chin Lock. Shelton rolled under to break the pressure. Sheamus pounded Shelton’s neck and went to the ropes. Shelton launched Sheamus with an Over-head Belly to Belly Suplex. The two men started exchanging brutal fists. Shelton got the better of it and went for an Irish Whip. Sheamus reversed the move but Shelton took advantage with a Springboarrd Crossbody. Shelton hit a pair of Clotheslines and sent Sheamus to the corner. Shelton hit a Stinger Splash on Sheamus. Shelton missed the 360 Enziguri but did catch Sheamus with a Bridging German Suplex. Sheamus was able to grab the bottom rope. Sheamus dropped Shelton over the top rope and then hit the Bicycle Kick to leave on a high note.

Grade: B+

Jay’s Thoughts: I’m glad to see Sheamus go to Raw but he might be making the jump just a little too early in his career. He really didn’t deal with the top level talent in ECW. He got bogged down with feuds against Goldust and Shelton Benjamin. Shelton should get a chance to move up the ladder, slightly, now that Sheamus is gone. I just hope that don’t go with a rip-off of the A.J. Styles “feeling sorry for myself, I think I should quit” storyline. That was annoying in TNA and it would be just as bad in ECW.

Rosa was still happy to be in ECW. She talked with Gregory Helms about all her shopping and such. Gregory said he was just trying to say hello. Paul and Katie Lea Burchill walked up to Helms. Paul said that he had plans to end the feud with The Hurricane, next week. Paul wanted Helms to be sure that Hurricane would be there. Helms said that there was no doubt that Hurricane would be there.

Byron and Josh sent it to a video package of the 7-on-7 tag match. It felt like rubbing salt in the wound. Big Show turned on his partners to hand the win to Team Smackdown. Savannah then talked with Christian. She mentioned that Christian has really talked positively about Yoshi Tatsu. Christian said that Yoshi earned his way to this title shot. Unlike Regal, Yoshi actually won some matches. Christian said tonight was a lesson in losing that he had to teach Yoshi.

Christian arrived for his title defense. The crowd was hot for “Captain Charisma”. Christian showed respect to those who came before by actually wearing the championship belt, instead of just slinging it over his shoulder. Christian soaked in the adoration of his “peeps” as his music rang out. Yoshi Tatsu then came out in gold and red.

Christian d Yoshi Tatsu
ECW Championship Match

The Finish:

Christian crawled to the corner. Yoshi hit the Flying Double Knees into Christian’s chest. Yoshi then went for his Rolling Bulldog. Christian dodged the Buzzsaw Kick and then took down Yoshi with the Slop Drop. Yoshi still kicked out at two. Yoshi kicked out at Christian and then whipped Christian to the corner. Christian hit the Back Kick and went for another Springboard Sunset Flip. Yoshi rolled through and nailed Christian with a brutal Mafia Kick to the chest. Christian was still able to kick free. Yoshi was getting frustrated. Yoshi missed his finisher kick and Christian tried, again, for the KillSwitch. Yoshi shoved out of the move and Christian ended up in the corner. He slid through the ropes to deliver the Pendulum Kick. Christian with the Morningstar (Flying European Uppercut). Christian got the crowd clapping along with him as he stalked Yoshi. On his third try, Christian finally hit the KillSwitch to retain his title.

Grade: A

Jay’s Thoughts: What a great main event! Yoshi is growing into quite a good wrestler. He will hold either the Intercontinental or US title within 18 months, count on it. I was hoping that Yoshi would take the title, but it wasn’t meant to be. Both men should be proud of their performances

After the match, Christian checked on Yoshi and showed respect to his foe. Suddenly, Ezekiel Jackson and Vladimir Kozlov hit the ring and attacked Christian. They hit the Double Uranage on the ECW champ. Regal then picked up the ECW title and stared at it. He got down into Christian’s face and talked trash to the knocked out champ. Regal held the belt aloft as ECW faded to black.

Final Grade: B

Final Thoughts: Despite a lousy start, ECW turned out to be a pretty good show. I was glad to see that Regal and his goons waited until after the match to attack. I would have given the show a failing grade if they had pulled a typical “Dusty Finish”. It looks like Regal is going to face Christian at Survivor Series, if WWE doesn’t screw over ECW again. It will likely open the show. I’m thinking that Edge, who is already in FCW, will be back on the main roster by Royal Rumble and joining forces with his “brother”, Christian, to face JeriShow.

Peace

Bragging Rights Analysis!
The Kingfish Arnie reports the major happenings at
Bragging Rights and delves into what it all might mean.

As a show, Bragging Rights added up to less than the sum of its parts. There was nothing truly horrible, but it was a B- package – and a PPV should rate at least a B+.

It turned out pretty much the way it looked on paper. The matches were all right, but ultimately not very meaningful.

One thing that hurt is that the theme tanked. If WWE does Bragging Rights in 2010, they’ll have to overhaul the whole thing.

They can begin with the supposed signature match of the pay per view. The seven-on-seven contest had some good moments, but I predicted Big Show’s treachery after watching the RAW on which Triple H formed his team. The only part of the formula the writers missed was that Show didn’t take off his RAW shirt to reveal a Smackdown one underneath.

A last-minute attempt to bolster the theme had the opposite result. The claim that a roster had to win two of three Bragging Rights matches just cheapened the seven-on-seven.

The design –if you want to call it that – needs re-thinking, too. Ending it with a single pin or submission turned it into just another cluster schmazz tag team mess. Who wants to see 12 guys standing around while two fight? This should’ve been an elimination match in which pins and submissions whittled down the teams.

A longer “Bragging Rights” match would have bumped the Iron Man match off the card, but WWE could’ve put it on a different pay per view. As it was, the Orton-Cena showdown was decent, a B/B+, but it had quite a bit of laying around on the mat and general stalling.

That’s it for today. I’ll be back tomorrow with another installment of the Internet’s fastest-rising daily wrestling column. I hope you’ll join me then – and, please, bring your friends.

Bragging Rights: Preview & Predictions!
The Kingfish Arnie Katz has plenty to say about WWE’s 10/25 pay per view.

Maybe WWE shouldn’t brag.

This is a very weak show built around a gimmick that didn’t generate any fan excitement. One, of many, reasons is that WWE couldn’t promote it very well since they didn’t know the rules. It started out as an imitation of WCW’s WarGames, but it seems like WWE has decided instead to imitate WCW’s habit presenting pay per view matches that had not been thoroughly thought out and tested.

The basic concept of Bragging Rights is deeply flawed. It means little to the fans and actually hurts WWE’s business.

The fundamental problem is that the RAW and Smackdown rosters have exchanged and shared talent so often that there is no sense of true rivalry. Fans know that WWE shuffles the rosters periodically and reassigns talent whenever it feels like it, so there’s no separation.

Another problem with the premise is that there is no logical connection between one of the teams winning the match and deciding which show is better. A win in the match simply doesn’t relate to which show is better, because it doesn’t actually evaluate the two shows.

The Bragging Rights gimmick hurts WWE’s business, because it creates an artificial separation between fans who like RAW and those who prefer Smackdown. The hype for the pay per view makes it sound like you can’t be a fan of both shows – and isn’t that what WWE wants? They wantmore audience overlap, not less. Hearing fans in the arena on the19/19 RAW boo Smackdown should’ve triggered one of those celebrated Vince McMahon backstage rants.

Normally, I do a very elaborate preview. I give the kayfabe back-story of each match, a detailed prediction of the outcome and a predicted grade for the latch.

That approach works with Bragging Rights. Frankly, Bragging Rights probably doesn’t deserves that much attention. Most of the matches have little or no motivation and the outcome doesn’t matter much, either.

Bragging Rights isn’t totally devoid of interest. It will see the end of the Cena-Orton and, perhaps, the Undertaker-Punk feuds and, more importantly, will start a number of story lines that will evolve and develop through the fall and winter.

That’s it for today. I’ll be back on Monday with another installment of the Internet’s fastest-rising daily wrestling column. I’ll have the recap and analysis of Bragging Rights and you’ll be able to laugh at my predictions.
