WRESTLING COLUMNS

A Tournament Of Independents
January 17, 2006 by D.E. Cooper

To start things off, this is my first column here at OWW. I've been a long time reader and always wanted to contribute but never had the time. So, I have finally decided to sit down and give it a try. I hope everyone likes it and in a few weeks I'll do another.

Every year since 2002 the International Wrestling Cartel, based out of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, has held their Super Indy Tournament. A tournament featuring the best of the best independent wrestling stars, in an 8-man single elimination style tournament for the IWC Super Indy Title. The winner defends the title for a year and then is offered a spot in the tournament to prove that he is still the best.

In 2002 the Super Indy Tournament consisted of: CM Punk, Chris Hero, Super Hentai, Orion, Christopher Daniels, Colt Cabana, Low-Ki, and Kid Sensation. Super Hentai was the first man to win the annual tournament and prove himself among the Indy elite. Hentai was trained in Hayabusa, Japan and has remained a regular in the IWC. Hentai lost the title to AJ Styles in March of 2003.

The 2003 Super Indy Tournament consisted of: Sterling James Keenan, BJ Whitmer, Colt Cabana, Super Hentai, Matt Stryker, Ikuto Hidaka, Christopher Daniels, and Raven. Colt Cabana defeated Matt Stryker in the final round to win the 2nd annual Super Indy Tournament. Cabana would go on to lose the title to AJ Styles in March of 2004. Colt still makes special Appearances in the IWC every now and then.

The 2004 Installment of the Tournament consisted of: Chris Sabin, Glenn Spectre, CM Punk, Sonjay Dutt, Onryu, DDT Pro Star "Soldier", Alex Shelly, and Super Hentai. After a hard fought final match, Chris Sabin arose victorious. In December of 2004, Sabin had to vacate the title due to injury. Chris Sabin had a long winning streak in IWC, with his first loss coming at the hands of Samoa Joe in Late 2005

In 2005 The 4th Annual Super Indy Tournament contained such stars as: John McChesney, CM Punk, Glenn Spectre, Christopher Daniels, Homicide, Shiima Xion, Low-Ki, and Jason Gory. McChesney defeated Low-Ki in a brutal finals match. Winning the Super Indy Tournament catapulted McChesney to such success as a debut in ROH, a WWE Try out match and he was voted IWC's 2005 Wrestler of the year. McChesney remains champion to this day.

2006 is a new year for IWC, and another tournament is scheduled for April 15th. Four Superstars have already been signed to compete, they are: Ricky Reyes, Matt Sydal, Shannon Moore, and Petey Williams. Three Qualifying matches are also scheduled for the next few events. John McChesney has yet to announce if he'll be re-entering the tournament.

Super Indy 5 should be another great event from the International Wrestling Cartel, and I'd like to thank all of the people involved in the company for all of the great times. I would also like to thank all of you for reading this column. For more information about IWC, you can visit www.iwcwrestling.com
