WRESTLING COLUMNS

A Rebirth of Tag Team Wrestling
April 18, 2005 by Jason Miles

By now, most of us have heard that Matt Hardy was released by the WWE. We know the possibilities for a young and talented wrestler like him now that he is a free agent. One of the more likely possibilities is that Matt will join his brother Jeff in NWA:TNA. This could be a dream come true for many wrestling fans. Of course, we get the reunion of the Hardy Boys, but it does not end there. A Hardy reunion could end up leading to a feud that could measure up to some of the greatest in wrestling history.

For those of you that don't know much about NWA TNA, there is a lot of young talent that one-day could find fame and fortune in the WWE. Two such stars of TNA are the current tag team champs, America's Most Wanted. Chris Harris and James Storm, affectionately known as AMW, are two up-and-comers in the business. They have won the titles together 5 times in two-and-a-half years and have held the belts since January. Now, while they may not have the belts when and if Matt arrives in TNA, but they will definitely be around and hopefully still together as they are exciting to watch when they are together. I would compare them to many of the great finesse tag teams like The Midnight Express and The Andersons.

Of course, we all know about the Hardy Boys escapades in WWE. They helped to revolutionize the tag team ranks, not just in WWE but also in all of wrestling. The antics of the Hardy Boys made them wildly popular around the world. They helped to rebuild tag wrestling in the WWE. To compare them to any other tag team in the world would be a bit unfair seeing as they helped to change the face of tag team wrestling. A tag team like the Hardy Boys comes around once in a blue moon. It would be great to see them team together again.

For those of us who have been wrestling fans for as long as I have will remember some of the greatest tag feuds happened in the 1980s. Who will ever forget battles between The Midnight Express and The Rock and Roll Express" The Road Warriors (LOD) and Demolition" The Powers of Pain and The Road Warriors" The Koloffs and The Rock and Roll Express" I still sit around and watch the old videos in amazement. These were some of the greatest feuds in wrestling history. Some of them have found there way into video games. I miss the days of true tag teams feuding it out with each other to see who truly is the best tag team. There are very few true tag teams left in wrestling. Many of them are thrown together now a day. And if they are a true tag team, they didn't start out that way. The days of great tag team wrestling are something that I miss dearly.

Now, Matt is still a few months from full recovery and there is no guarantee that he is going to go to TNA, but please, allow a man to dream. Imagine the day that Matt and Jeff finally do reunite. If it were under a TNA banner, the possibilities would be endless for them. Matt and Jeff helped to revolutionize the game of tag team wrestling, but AMW has truly taken the game in a completely different direction. They are two teams on kind of opposite ends of the spectrum. While The Hardys are the high fliers, AMW are more of a finesse tag team.

These are two tag teams that have helped build a new phase in tag team wrestling. You have a tag team of the new age like The Hardy Boys and you have a tag team that is reminiscent of the great tag teams of the past with a new twist in AMW. Will we only ever see these two titan teams collide" Only time will tell. I for one am hoping Matt joins his brother in NWA TNA. If he does, we could see a resurrection of the great tag team wars of the past. I for one, look forward to that possibility!
