The Phenomenal Rockers: Marty Jannetty & Shawn Michaels
April 18, 2005 by Louie John Buluran

The Rocker reunion on
March 14, 2005 from RAW.

When you talk about guys who made an impact into your life especially in the wrestling world. The first thing that comes to my mind is Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michaels, the tag-team members of the legendary Midnight Rockers. They are my all time favorite among the wrestlers not name Bret Hart, Stonecold Steve Austin, The Rock, Mick Foley and Dave Batista. A phenomenal gifted athlete who combine showmanship with artillery of finesse and athleticism inside the wrestling ring. Marty Jannetty is a 6 ft 0, 226 lbs. of non-stop highflying daredevil buff dude who performs some fantastic stuff life Hurracaranna and Moonsault. The Legendary Marty Jannetty started wrestling in the NWA territory at St. Louis Missouri under the name of Marty Oates, he quickly became famous when he team with a young kid from San Antonio, Texas name Shawn Michaels a wrestler phenom groom by the legendary Jose Lothario to formed one of the greatest tag-team in the History of wrestling (although they did not win the WWF tag-team Gold officially) They became Tag-team champions in the defunct American Wrestling Association engaging in a bloody feud with the legendary Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers. Here Marty Jannetty shows his athleticism by being able to cross body and reverse the moves of his opponent via the move call the Hurracaranna. Shawn Michaels meanwhile became the master of the Side Shuffle Kick, which he made famous by calling it "Sweet Chin Music" his patented finishing move. The Rocker Dropper was used by both of these competitors to annihilate their opponent. This became the predecessor of moves like the Fameasser of Billy Gunn and Sidekick of Booker T.

In the summer of 1987 the Midnight Rockers sign a developmental contract with the WWF but fired 2 weeks later because of partying too hard. A year later they resigned with the WWF and became known as the Rockers. The most versatile and highly talented and gifted athlete ever to grace the WWF ring they combine strength with their highflying risk moves. Upon entering the WWF they engage in memorable feud with teams like the British Bulldog, Hart Foundation, Demolition brothers, Strike Force and Samoans like Barbarian and Haku. They made their Wrestlemania Debut in a losing cost against a team known as the twin towers, during the 1980's most of the wrestlers are flabby, but the Rockers are buff and talented. They showed tremendous work of art by double teaming and surprising their opponents with missile dropkicks and double suplexes. The Rockers became the predecessors of such great and talented teams like the Hardy Boyz who redefine gravity by their great aerial assault and great technical wrestling skills. This tremendous talent can be shown in one of the greatest tag-team matches in History at Wrestlemania VII they defeat the team of Barbarian and Haku, in this match both Michaels and Jannetty exemplified both of their skills and showmanship inside the ring. Jannetty would whip Haku in one corner of the ring and HBK will hit barbarian with a swinging neckbreaker. The aftermath of the match the Rockers end their feud with Haku and Barbarian by defeating them in Wrestlemania VII. The Rockers will finally soar their relationship when Shawn Michaels walk away during the final moments of their Survivor Series Match leaving Marty Jannetty to be pin by their prey. In January of 1992 their 5 years relationship came to an end in a WWE segment when The Rockers break up after Shawn Michaels throws Marty Jannetty through the window of Brutus Beefcake's "Barber Shop". HBK kicks Marty Jannetty sweet chin music over the windows bammmmm... as that phenomenal side shuffle kick will finally start one of the greatest run in WWE History as HBK became the first ever Grandslam champion in WWE history winning the World tag-team champion, 1995 and 1996 Royal Rumble, The Intercontinental Championship and the WWF World title. While Marty Jannetty became a thorns in the career of Shawn Michaels as they face each other once again on an Episode of Raw in1993 where Jannetty upset HBK for the Intercontinental Championships. They have their rematch a few months on Royal Rumble when HBK regains the Intercontinental championships by pinning Jannetty due to the interference of Sensational Sherri Martel who was caught on the line whom she will support in the match. The pointed shoe is really meant to HBK but he hit Jannetty when HBK reverse it. Shawn Michaels hit Jannetty with Sweet Chin Music and beat his former best friend. Shawn Michaels became a Single Wrestler and a Legend in the wrestling world and here are the summary of his accomplishment in the last 20 years of his wrestling career while Marty Jannetty reformed the Rockers with an unknown Leif Cassidy whom later known in this business as Al Snow. The Rockers made their reunion on February 14 2005 Episode of Raw as they defeated former 2 times WWE tag-team champion La Resistance. The WWE impressed with Marty signed Marty Jannetty on Raw to be a tag-team partner of HBK in the near future. Here is History of these wrestlers as they began their singles careers since they separated apart.

Shawn Michaels: The Showstopper Entrance Music Lyrics

I think I'm cute,
I know I'm sexy!
I've got the looks
That drives the girls wild!
I've got the moves
That really move 'em.
I send chills
Up and down their spines!

(chorus)
I'm just a sexy boy! (sexy boy)
I'm not your boy toy! (boy toy)
I'm just a sexy boy! (sexy boy)
I'm not your boy toy! (boy toy)

I make 'em hot,
I make 'em shiver!
Their knees get weak
When I come around!
They see me walk,
They hear me talk,
I make 'em feel
Like they're on cloud nine!

(chorus)

Eat your heart out, girls! Hands off the merchandise!

(chorus repeats)

Shawn Michaels is the most flamboyant, resilient, charismatic WWF superstar of all time. He got his start in the WWF in 1987, with Marty Jannetty, as the Rockers. Their partnership ended in 1992, when Michaels threw Marty through a plate glass window. He took on Sensational Sherri as his manager, and beat Tito Santana at WrestleMania VIII for his first WM victory. He got into a feud with the British Bulldog, and won his first IC title from him. He lost an early WWF title match to Bret Hart at the '92 Survivor Series (Michaels's title was not on the line).

He lost his title to Marty Jannetty in Spring of 1993, but won it back two weeks later with the help of his new bodyguard, Diesel. He beat Crush at King of the Ring, and Mr. Perfect at Summerslam. Then he took a little vacation, which caused WWF President Jack Tunney to strip him of the title. Shawn with his 3 Knights made his return at the '93 Survivor Series, taking Jerry Lawler's place in a tag match against the Hart Family.

He wrestled Razor Ramon for the IC title in a thrilling Ladder Match at WrestleMania X, but he lost. He then took a vacation from wrestling and managed Diesel to win the title from Ramon. The day before SummerSlam, Diesel and Shawn won the tag titles from the Headshrinkers. At SummerSlam, Michaels cost Diesel the IC belt by accidentally superkicking him. This happened again and again up until Survivor Series where Diesel had enough and turned against Shawn. The tag titles were vacated, but that didn't bother Michaels.

He won the 1995 Royal Rumble, when only one of his feet touched the floor. He climbed back in and dumped out Davey Boy Smith who thought he had won. Michaels lost to Diesel in a classic match at WrestleMania XI. The next night his new bodyguard, Psycho Sid, attacked him. Diesel came to his rescue and Michaels heard the first cheers for him in a long time. He qualified for the King of the Ring but went to a time limit draw with Kama in the first round. At the July IYH, he beat Jeff Jarrett for his third IC title. Michaels defended it at SummerSlam against Razor Ramon in a Ladder rematch. This time, Shawn won. At the September IYH, he and Diesel beat Davey Boy Smith (filling in for Owen Hart) and Yokozuna in a Triple Header Match, and won the tag team titles. They were stripped of the titles the next day, however, due to a technicality. Nine thugs in Syracuse, a week before his title match at the October IYH attacked Michaels. He was forced to give up the belt to Dean Douglas, as he was unfit to wrestle. He made a brief comeback, but the day after Survivor Series, he collapsed in the ring. (WWF write this as a story line because he quickly returned to his injuries.)

He made his return at the 1996 Royal Rumble, winning the RR match. After beating Owen Hart at the February IYH, he wrestled Bret Hart in an Iron Man Match at WrestleMania XII, and won his first world title. Throughout his reign, he beat Diesel (IYH: Good Friends, Better Enemies), Davey Boy Smith (King of the Ring), Vader (SummerSlam), and Mankind (IYH: Mind Games). He lost the belt to Psycho Sid at the Survivor Series.

Shawn received a title match at the Royal Rumble in San Antonio Texas, and won it back from Sid. However, he was forced to give it up due to a knee injury just a few weeks later. He returned in June, teaming with rival Steve Austin to win another tag title from Davey Boy Smith and Owen Hart. He soon reinjured his knee, and was again forced to relinquish one of his titles. He was the referee for the Bret Hart/ Undertaker match at SummerSlam, where he cost the Undertaker the title by accidentally hitting him with a chair. The next night on Raw, the fans booed Shawn Michaels.

"Let me get this straight... You (McMahon), The Undertaker, and the best that I can tell, the fans of the World Wrestling Federation, are dumping this in my lap."

When he wrestled Mankind, Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Chyna came down and distracted him while Rick Rude bashed him with a chair, allowing Michaels to get the win. This formed the first version of D-Generation X.

Shawn and the Undertaker wrestled to a no contest at IYH: Ground Zero, which set up the first ever Hell in a Cell match at IYH: Badd Blood. Before that match took place, Shawn won the European title from the British Bulldog at One Nite Only in England. Shawn won the brutal cell match with the Undertaker due to interference from Kane. At the Survivor Series, Shawn made Bret Hart submit to his own hold, the Sharpshooter. (In the Infamous Montreal Screw job where Bret do not inadvertently tap-out when referee Hebner saw Mr. McMahon and he signed to ring the fucking bell, HBK leave the ring holding the belt high, at the backstage Bret Hart confronted HBK and ask him if he ever now about this set-up Shawn Michaels swore to God if he ever know a thing) He won his third WWF title, which he defended against Ken Shamrock at IYH: D-generation X. He lost by DQ, and shortly thereafter, Rude went to WCW. Shawn lost the European title to Triple H in a faux match, which was ordered by Sgt. Slaughter. Michaels simply lay down, and Triple H mocked the Ultimate Warrior by running around the ring and then pretending to splash Michaels for the pin.

Shawn then won a Casket Match against the Undertaker at the Royal Rumble, again, because of interference from Kane. He finally lost the WWF title to Steve Austin at WrestleMania XIV, injuring his back in the process. The back injury turned out to be career ending. Shawn returned months later to be the WWF's Commissioner, but once he got married, he chose a family life over wrestling. He started his own promotion in San Antonio, and wrestled his retirement match on April 4, 2000.

He returned to WWE full time in May of 2002, as an advisor to the nWo, headed by his friend Kevin Nash. He tried to recruit Triple H to their side, but the nWo disbanded after Nash tore a muscle in his leg, putting him out for an indefinite period of time. When Raw and Smackdown got GMs, they both tried to sign Triple H to their side. Michaels persuaded HHH to join Eric Bischoff on Raw, but was upset when HHH named him as a manager. Triple H told him not to worry, and they returned later that night, clad in DX shirts. However, as Triple H did his old mic routine, he suddenly turned on Michaels and gave him a Pedigree. The next week, HHH was explaining why he turned on Shawn when a stagehand informed him that Shawn had been put through the window of a car in the back. HHH was remorseful and vowed to find out who did it. The next week, Shawn appeared on Raw from his home, and showed everyone some footage that showed a security camera catching Triple H attacking him. HHH admitted to the crime, and said it was to protect Shawn, to show him he was too vulnerable to get in the ring with him. Shawn broke his retirement by challenging HHH to a street fight at SummerSlam. Shawn's return was triumphant, but HHH attacked him after the match with a sledgehammer. Shawn was stretchered out and didn't appear again until October, where he revealed that his rehab was complete and he was coming after HHH. He returned at Survivor Series, against HHH, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, Kane and Chris Jericho in the first ever Elimination Chamber match for the World Title. He won the match and the title, but HHH was relentless, and defeated Shawn in a Three Stages of Hell match at Armageddon to win the title back.

Shawn was confronted the next night by Chris Jericho, who said he no longer had any respect for Shawn. He told Shawn to prove that he was still the same HBK that drew number one in the 1995 Royal Rumble and volunteer for the number one position in the 2003 Royal Rumble. Shawn did so, and Jericho subsequently won a match that gave him the right to choose his number for the match. Instead of going for number thirty, Jericho chose number two. He eliminated Shawn quickly, with help from Christian and a steel chair. Shawn caused Jericho to be eliminated later on, and continued to plague Jericho. They met at WrestleMania XIX, with Shawn picking up the victory. He teamed with Kevin Nash and Booker T to lose to Triple H, Ric Flair and Jericho at Backlash. He supported Nash in his chase for HHH's World Title until after Judgment Day. When Triple H could choose any challenger he wanted, he chose Flair so that he could lie down for him. Shawn convinced Ric that he could take the title, and the next week requested a match against him to see how high he was on the Ric Flair measuring stick. Flair accepted, but GM Eric Bischoff made the match a handicap match, with Flair and Shawn teaming against HHH. Flair turned on Shawn during the match, showing that he still was the same old Flair. Shawn met Flair at Bad Blood, and lost. He then became the target of Randy Orton, who fashioned himself a Legend Killer after beating down Mick Foley. He cost Shawn a rematch with Jericho, and both men were entered into an Elimination Chamber match at SummerSlam for the World Title. However, Goldberg defeated both in the match. They finally met at Unforgiven, and Orton won after Flair handed him some brass knuckles. Shawn was chosen by Steve Austin to be the last member of his Survivor Series team. If Shawn's team lost, then Austin would be fired as co-GM of Raw. Shawn teamed with RVD, Booker T, and the Dudley Boyz to take on Jericho, Christian, Scott Steiner, Mark Henry and Randy Orton. Shawn was the last member on his team against Jericho, Orton and Christian. Shawn managed to pin Christian and Jericho, but Orton pinned him thanks to Batista. Shawn confronted Batista the next week, and they had a match at Armageddon. Shawn pulled a super kick out of nowhere and managed to beat the big man.

Shawn Michaels challenge HHH for the World Heavyweight title on Raw that ended in an amazing double pin as referee Hebner call it and HHH retains the World title by tie. In the Royal Rumble 2004 he face his nemesis Triple H once again for the World title in a last man standing match which again ended in a vicious 50 minute bloody draw. The next night on Raw Triple H & Shawn Michaels argue over who the better man is, until they are interrupted by... Chris Benoit! Benoit goes on to let them know he doesn't care which of them is champion; he's going to take it at Wrestlemania! In the grand daddy of them all Wrestlemania 20 Chris Benoit defeated HHH and HBK in a Triple Threat match to win his first WWE title. At Backslash 2004 Shawn Michaels and HHH once again being defeated by Chris Benoit when Shawn Michaels taps-out in a Sharpshooter in front of the Canadian crowd. The classic rivalry of HHH and HBK reach its pinnacles at Badd Blood when the Game defeats Shawn Michaels in a 50 minute bloody Hell in a Cell match. The next night on Raw Jim Ross initiate a Handshake between HHH and HBK when Kane appear out of nowhere and crushes the larynx of HBK with a steel chair. Shawn Michaels return at Unforgiven2004 and defeated the 7 ft. tall Monster Kane with sweet chin music out of nowhere. HBK develop a rivalry with Captain Charisma Christian when Christian attacks HBK the past two weeks on Raw and claims that he is the Show Stealer and he will dethrone the Show Stopper Shawn Michaels. In an Episode on Raw last October HBK defeated Christian. At Taboo Tuesday 2004 Shawn Michaels put an amazing effort despite being injured only to lose to HHH. Shawn Michaels need some time of and a few months later he return on WWE's New PPV. The New Years Revolution as a special guest referee, He forced to eliminate Edge when he was accidentally spear and HBK reacts with that spear and hit Edge with a sweet chin music as Chris Benoit pin Edge.

Shawn develop a rivalry with Edge as they faced each other at Royal Rumble 2005 in a singles competition and later in a 30 man Battle Royal. Edge wins via cheating as he holds on the tights of Shawn Michaels. On the 2005 Royal Rumble HBK enters the ring and eliminated Kurt Angle who re-enter the ring and eliminated HBK also. Kurt Angle snaps and beat HBK in a bloody pulp and forced him to tap-out with the Ankle lock. Edge and HBK continues their rivalry on Raw as HBK also has something to settle things down with Smack down's Kurt Angle. GM Bischoff announces a Street fight between HBK and Edge at Monday Night Raw. HBK busted open defeated Edge guess what with Thunderous Sweet Chin Music. Shawn celebrated for a while Angle sneak from behind and assaulted HBK he Angle Slam the bloody Shawn Michaels. As Jim Ross and The King Jerry Lawler was disgusted by the wrong acts of Kurt Angle. Shawn Michaels made an appearance in Kurt's turf, he surprise Kurt Angle in an Episode of SmackDown. As he dresses up as a cameraman not knowing that his agenda is to attack Angle and pays for his dues. Shawn Michael's attack Kurt Angle and hit a policeman with Sweet Chin Music. On February 14 2005 Shawn Michaels reformed the Rockers with Marty Jannetty as they teamed up for 1 night only to defeat La Resistance. At the grand daddy of them all Wrestlemania 21 Kurt Angle defeats HBK who puts a tremendous effort but his effort is not enough as he tap-outs with Kurt's finishing move the Ankle Lock submission. The next night on Raw he tells the fans he vowed to face Angle again in a rematch and thank the crowd for cheering him last night, The Music of Muhammad Hassan was heard as he enters the ring and adhere was happened last night when the Immortal Hulk Hogan Leg drop him and Daivari. He wants to prove to the fans that he can defeat an American Icon like HBK by being forced him to tap-out with the famous Camel-Clutch. HBK was being double team by the two Arab-Americans as Hassan forced HBK in a camel clutch submission. The following week on Raw Shawn Michaels was being defeated by Daivari with the interference of Muhammad Hassan and on Backlash Shawn Michaels announces that Hulk Hogan will be his tag-team partner for 1 night only, as the Hulkster will team with the Showstopper to end the winning strict of Muhammad Hassan and Khroskow Daivari.

Marty Jannetty: The Rocker Dropper

Marty does not have the colorful and larger than life career of his contemporary Shawn Michaels but he has accomplished something's normal wrestler could not accomplish in their entire career. He became a tag-team champion with Sean Waltman after his split up with HBK. (But the feeling is not the same). He also became an Intercontinental Champion when he upsets HBK. In a rematch he loses the title due to the interference of HBK's bodyguard Diesel. Marty was an athletic guy who uses his talent and speed more than his size. He jobbed mostly to incoming wrestler and quit the WWF for the 2nd time. In 1996 He again returns with the Rocker gimmick with a new partner the Teen Idol Leif Cassidy. They became terrible heels in my eye as they jobbed mostly to teams like the Smoking Gunn's, Heavenly Bodies and Body Donnas. Marty disappeared to WWF television and signed a contract with WCW. He was greatly misused there as he continuously became a jobber, I will over-looked the fact that even the great Manager Bobby Heenan defeated him in a singles match. He left WCW and rejuvenated his career with such Independent Wrestling promotion.

He was once called back by the WWE to do a program with Kurt Angle who is in feud with his former tag-team partner Shawn Michaels. In an Episode of Smackdown he take Ankle to the limit as he deliver a PPV caliber type of a match only to lose to Kurt Ankle after preventing the Ankle Lock submission for nearly 1 minute. On March 20, 2005 Marty Jannetty was signed by WWE for an exclusive contract to train wrestlers and be a partner of Shawn Michaels. The Rockers has evolve to be one of the most dominating duo of all time as one of them will became a future Hall of Famer and the other is still searching for winning the big one. I think Mr. McMahon is very genius enough to signed Marty Jannetty despite being 43 years old he moves like a 23 year old inside the ring. We will see how WWE will use the Rockers once again. They are really the two most phenomenal athletes to ever grace the WWF/e square circle. Shawn Michaels became the athlete that most people will remember for the rest of their lives while Marty Jannetty will always be known as a great competitor how much they have different career paths. Many people say that Mary Jannetty has been more talented and athletic more than Shawn Michaels during their time with the Rockers but HBK outgrow Jannetty and develop a personality of his own the "Sexy Boy Gimmick" that will propelled him to new heights into a main eventer in WWE while Marty Jannetty simply does not evolve and stay a Rocker up to this day because the script writers does not catapulted his talent and growing potentials, because HBK has more mic skills than Marty Jannetty. I guess that the reformation of the rockers will finally succeed. They have the chance now to improve the tag-team division on Raw, as I think they will have a chance to finally win the World tag-team title.
