WRESTLING COLUMNS

From The Trailer Park
One-On-One Matches @ Wrestlemania
March 8, 2004 by Billy Bob (debut Column on OWW)

In this weeks column I would like to address something that I don't think most people think about, how adding more people to Wrestlemania matches can water down the effect.

First of all, the Randy Orton and Mick Foley feud. This has been a great feud, I love it, and I love that Mick Foley has taken it so seriously, even to go to the lengths to instruct Orton to do some serious damage to his eye, the feud has been intense. Last week on Raw, The Rock returned, which I was excited about, but WWE did something that I think hurt the Randy Orton and Mick Foley feud, they threw 3 other guys into the mix, The Rock, Batista and Ric Flair. I understand this is a way to get all these guys on the card, and that Evolution has all been sort of involved in the Mick-Randy feud, but the main attraction I think has been the legend killer Orton and Foley. I was looking forward so much to an intense one on one matchup, this match has been building for so long between these two, and now WWE all of the sudden wants to throw The Rock and the rest of Evolution in the match, now instead of Foley putting over Orton in a clean match that would really do wonders for Orton, the match will be focused mainly on The Rock, who has had nothing to do with the feud. The Rock is a huge attraction, and should most definitely be involved with Wrestlemania, but not to steal the spotlight from such a great and intense feud between two men that have made it seem they hate eachothers guts. In my opinion The Rock should have took the opportunity to face John Cena at Wrestlemania, both with their great mic skills would make for an entertaining feud, and The Rock could put Cena over, and lets face it, Cena is fighting the Big Show, we saw this match on Smackdown not to long ago, im not exactly thrilled to see this match at Wrestlemania. The saying for Wrestlemania this year is...Where it all begins...again, which I think is great and should of been a perfect time for Rock and Foley to put Cena and Orton over.

Now, heres one I know alot of people are pissed about - Triple H vs Chris Benoit vs HBK. Wow, WWE really screwed this one up adding in Shawn Michaels to the mix, who the hell wants to see a triple threat match at Wrestlemania? I sure as hell don't. What happened to the classic one on matches for the title? Only one man will walk out the better man. Now with this triple threat crap, anyone can pin anyone, sounds like Triple H peaked in another creative meeting and gave his advice. On the Raw that I attended in Omaha a few weeks ago, Triple H said something like this - "Do you think im happy that I can lose the title without even being pinned?" I'm sure most people where thinking yes you are. The HBK-HHH feud has worn out its welcome in my book, there Summerslam match was great, and so was the one they had on the last Raw of 2003, but nothing else I can remember was to spectacular. I don't care to see them fight again. But, Chris Benoit on the other hand, this guy deserves it, he is an awesome wrestler who has been getting shoved in the middle to much of his life. Chris Benoit vs HHH would of been a great match for the heavyweight title, Benoit won the Royal Rumble, this was his shot at glory. But they throw old-timer HBK in there. Why? Because he still gets a pop every time he comes out on Raw? People like HBK, hell I like him, but the WWE ruined this great match by throwing him in when he certianly did not need to be in, he's past the prime of his career, he should of been putting someone over, not trying to relive the glory days.

Well I can't really complain to much about the rest of the card, it looks awesome. Goldberg vs Brock, I can't believe they're doing this match, its a dream match. Kane vs The Undertaker will also be awesome to see, and Jericho vs Christian should be good, being as its been building for quite a while. Eddy vs Kurt Angle I think will be one of those matches where you hear about it and you don't get to excited being that its a Wrestlemania main event, but when you see it you're glad they did it, both men are extremley great atheletes, and I dont think i'll be disapointed. I would also like to say im glad Hulk Hogan won't be at this years Wrestlemania, last year Hogan and Vince stunk up the ppv by promoting there matches about all others, I have to admit I was looking foward to seeing all the old legends show up this year, but with the new slogan for Wrestlemania, im glad no ones giving them a call.

Well thats about all I have for this week, thanks for reading and PLEASE, send your feedback, whether you agreed or disagreed with me, i'd like to hear your thoughts - [email protected]
