WRESTLING COLUMNS
Week in Review - First Ever Report
April 5, 2003 - by Darryl Craven

So Another week of WWE TV coming off the back of the years biggest PPV has thrown up a couple of surprises but nothing to shake the ground.
Firstly we have Steve Austin's six hundredth firing on RAW on Monday night, where exactly this ones going is an open debate, there seems no real plausible reason unless he's injured. I know his neck, back and knees are pretty much shot but seeing as though he has only wrestled a couple of times in the last 7 or 8 months this doesnt seem the likely reason. As Brad told me earlier in the week its probably to get the internet talking. Oh and look it has.......

A Rock Appreciation night, give me a break. I actually think that The Rock is the best thing on RAW right now, but for gods sake stop cramming him down our throats past the acceptible level. I just get the feeling that Rocky is overplaying a little much and that's making his character annoying and not hateable, but what the hell do I know I'm just a guy with a PC.
Sidenote: Wow Hunter didn't exactly squash Hurricane, he actually let the match go back and forth a little, shocked as me anyone?
If anyone has read the RAW report on this site you will come across a sidenote from Brad - "Editor's Note: Rosey is the worst wrestler ever in WWE history.. " Kind of sums it up really. Made Maven look really bad when the kid has talent, I just dont think he will ever make it, the whole Tough Enough debacle really doesn't help him either.
Good match between Booker and Jericho this week bit confused however as to how and why this match came about but it did, probably just signalling the end of Bookers title aspirations (surprise surprise) and more than likely he will go back to midcard.
As a huge Kane mark, the people who know me thought I would be jumping for joy when he won his umpteenth tag title. Nuh huh, I hate him getting the tag straps, it means he ain't gonna be pushing for a title shot any time soon, mind you, he was buried by Mr Levesque a few months ago wasnt he so I suppose Vince has to keep him happy to some sort of degree.

And finally Gold"turd" as Brad puts it made his WWE debut Monday night, great huh? Been looking forward to that one, Ive been sooooo looking forward to it, it nearly compares to sticking ten pineapples up my arse. I just hope we see the big clumsy fool jobbing to Steve Lombardi next month on Velocity, having said that we dont want Steve Lombardi in hospital do we, lets just leave him alone altogether.

Onto Smackdown! now and the "big" news of the night wasn't Sable's return, I'll come to that in a moment, or that Piper's Pit is returning, no, it was that both Kurt Angle, who really shouldn't have fought at WM XIX and Brock were ok and at home nursing their injuries. If anyone did NOT see Brocks Shooting Star Press at Wrestlemania, and I'm pretty sure you will have by now, it was sickening, I for one, literally jumped out of my seat and sat back down with a huge sigh of releif once it was apparent he was ok. Very similar to Hayabusa's botched Shooting Star a couple of years ago Lesnar landed on his face instead of his chest, in what could be a matter of centimeters from Brock sitting around with a concussion at this moment from Brock laying in a morgue right now. Scary stuff to watch, so it was good news he was OK.

As for Kurt Angle, the news this week that his experimental spinal surgery could cut his recovery time from 1 year or more to six to eight weeks is a blessing as I don't think I could sit and watch for an entire year without our Olympic Hero on TV. Good luck Kurt we all wish you a speedy recovery.
So theres a tournament being held for the number one contenders match. Just what A-Train was doing in there in the first place is a mystery to me. I have tried to give A-Train a chance when I watch him but I just cant see him doing anything major in the WWE, but Vince apparently loves the guy so what can you do. Anyways next week will see Benoit face Rhyno and Undertaker square off against John Cena, in which will probably end up with Benoit winning the thing outright, about time too.

So Sable is back eh? Why? Sable was both hot and decentish in the late 90's and is despised by many in the WWE locker room due to her selfish demeanour and her attitude. I can't actually see the point of bringing her in other than a very cheap very crappy attempt at a ratings boost. Over at WrestleCrap, RD summed it up perfectly:
| |
"Look, I enjoy seeing the old stars as much as anyone. I got a kick out of seeing Piper once again. But I don't want to see him, or Hogan, or Sable, or anyone else I got sick of seeing before just because they haven't been on TV in a while. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, but it doesn't block out the memories of how tired I was of these characters before they left"

And finally, Hulk Hogan is fired - AGAIN!!! I think he's been fired more than a blast furnace. Another angle that doesn't actually make any sense. If the tension of the Wrestlemania match of Hogan having to win so he didn't have to retire was a nothing point then why did they make it a retirement match only for him to "leave" four days later? Surely they could have just had Hogan do the job at Wrestlemania instead of wasting all that TV time on Smackdown!. No doubt we will see Hogan again sometime soon, when and under what circumstances remains to be seen.
All in all a weird week of WWE programming, and not a bad way to start off this brand new weekly column. Let's just see what Austin does this week, if anything, who Goldberg knocks out, who Triple H will squash and ultimately bury and what hilarities Goldust, who by far is the most entertaining man on RAW, comes out with next.
Till next week
