WRESTLING COLUMNS
Week in Review - First Ever Report
April 12, 2003 - by Darryl Craven

So another week another chance for my to get my two cents in (sorry Droz not ripping off your column man).
Trish Stratus. Hmmmmm. What can be said about Trish Stratus that hasnt already been said. Putting the Womans Strap on her is a huge mistake and a kick in the teeth to people like Jazz, Victoria, Molly Holly and Jacqueline (not Jackie Gayda definitely NOT Jackie Gayda). Sure she's pretty to look at, and yes the girl has worked hard to become a wrestler and not just a ringside floozy. But after all the hard work, come reports of very stiff in ring action from the WWE locker room. She has about three moves, two of which are crap, the "chick kick" (god I hate that name) and the turnbuckle hurricanrana. And that entrance music makes me cringe with that inane clown style laughter. I'm gonna get slated on this one, feel free to email me your views. So anyway she fought Jazz and won again on RAW.

Speaking of Jazz, she seems to have joined Teddy Long and Rodney Mack in the racism angle. I'm not exactly sure why yet but when I figure it out, I will let you all know.
Rock seemed to be everywhere on Monday. He's turning slowly into Triple H and I'm not sure why they had him refuse to Goldberg's challenge and accept on the same show. Surely the idea should have been to refuse this week and next week and then in the final week before the PPV accept it. It could have created a bit of tension and a bit of anticipation. But hey, nevermind.
Let's see what else relevant happened. Oh yeah Kevin Nash, who was supposedly going to be returning as Deisel, (well they played the Deisel music so they were half way there) returned. Looking like he was going to fall over on his way to the ring Nash managed to stay un-injured for a whole two and a half minutes which in his book is a resounding success.

Is JR annoying anybody else? I never thought I'd ever get annoyed with JR, but his overacting on the Austin thing is ridiculous, Austin had his dreams for 6 great years, he has held more titles than you could shake a stick at, and it seems to me that Austin will end up coming back in an administration sort of role like Foley did, a commissioner-esque character, and JR "will get his job back".
So RAW wasn't the greatest show, but it wasn't too bad, the standard of RAW IMHO has improved somewhat recently, here hopes it can get even better.
RAW SIDE NOTE: Did anyone else see the irony in HHH, Jericho and Flair's locker room conversation. Hunter wouldn't stop talking about burying people, how fitting.

Smackdown!, what can be said for Smackdown!? Since Paul Heyman was taken of the creative team the show has begun to show a few minor but costly flaws. The #1 contenders tournament has rattled down to John Cena v Chris Benoit, and we all know who will win, dont we.......?
Of course it will be John Cena, the writing makes it so obvious. This was meant to be the feud back last year when Cena emerged from nowhere. Now the WWE Head honchos, and by that I mean Stephanie and.....erm.....oh yeah Stephanie, have decided that now is the time to once again push that feud. Well I for one dont buy it. Yes Cena shows a lot of promise, defintely one of the rising stars, but he's not even close to the title shot he's being pushed for yet. There are the little known guys like oh Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Undertaker. Kurt's gonna get his rematch and there's a few others well ahead in the pecking order......
|
One of those said guys happens to be Matt Hardy who is actually outdoing Jeff in singles competition which is the wrong way round if you are looking at it from two years ago when Jeff was going to be the new HBK. Well I want to go on record in saying that the "lesser" Hardy, Matt, will be the new Shawn Micheals. I love the V1 gimmick, it has really given Matt the chance to sound wooden on the mic and yet sound so convincing at the same time which not only boosts his mic skills but his confidence too. He happened to put on a hell of a match on Thursday night, showing just how far he has come in the last year. Now all he needs to do is get rid of Shannon Moore who I cant help think looks like a smaller version of Christian.
OK, so we hoped that we all had seen the last of the lesbian angle, until Sable walked in to Torrie's dressing room on Smackdown!. I for one would love this angle to die a horrible death within the next two weeks before it actually starts proper. I mean, Sable isnt the freshest cookie in the box, take that how you want, and she's not the bombshell she was a few years ago. She could do some other job perfectly well, like bring back Marc Mero. OK OK, a lot of people are going to be shocked and appauled at what I just suggested but Mero was a hell of a worker and he had charisma in abundance which is something Smackdown! is currently a little short on.
Side Note: I wish the Vince/Hogan story would dissapear just as quickly as the Lesbo angle. The only decent thing to come out of it aside from WM XIX is the return of Jimmy Hart, I can't wait for him to get into full swing. I'm such a mark sometimes.
Nathan Jones, crap. I mean come on did you see his "debut". I'd rather forget it. The WWE are so scared of putting him in there with their top performers hence the match at WM XIX was changed at the last moment and the reason his first proper in ring performance was against Bill DeMott. I can hear it now:
~~~Vince: 'Take I want you to go into a fued with Jones
~~~Taker: I've seen him and no way, he's clumsier than Goldberg
~~~Vince: Oh Well, lower lower mid card should do it then
~~~Taker: Yeah and leave him there too.
I really can't see Jones making it, after all that hype, he wrestles.......Bill De-freakin-Mott. Great debut Nathan.

Piper's Pit is back (not much of a "pit" but....) and Rikishi got his head smashed in with a coconut, brillant.......oh hang on........did that useless peice of crap try and compare himself with the legend that is Jimmy Snuka, did I hear that correctly or is it my overactive negative side coming out. It was great to see Rowdy Roddy Piper in full swing again, it's like nothing ever changed..... ahhhhh the 80s. Quite what Sean O'Haire has to do with all this god only knows.
OK. So that just about wraps up another weekly review, a few issues have been dicussed, feel free to email me your points of view on what Ive mentioned or neglected to mention.
Till next week
