WRESTLING COLUMNS

In Defense of the Internet
April 18, 2005 by Johnny LaRue

Most people have a strong opinion of the wrestling news/spoiler sites. Either you hate them or you love them. One group of people who hate these sites are wrestlers. I can't understand for the life of me why wrestlers would shun these sites. Granted some sites deal in rumors and delve into personal issues. Then again how is this any different than picking up any tabloid or "People" magazine and reading about celebs" I am not condoning such behavior but you have to realize it comes with the territory of being famous.

Also, most sites report newsworthy events and hold the wrestlers (and promoters) accountable for their actions. Perhaps this is why most wrestlers dislike these sites. If a wrestler is causing trouble backstage or keeping another wrestler down the public will hear about it. Which in turn may affect their fan base and as most people know the less the fans care about you the odds of you getting a contract extension decreases. Personally I feel that having fans in "the know" forces the wrestlers to try harder. Gone are the days of a wrestler being able to wrestle a half assed match and still shock the crowd by the unknown outcome. Now the wrestlers have to actually put on a show and impress the fans. The argument that the fans know the end result which ruins the match falls flat. Most (real) fans could care less about the outcome of the match. What the fans want is an entertaining match.

One would think wrestlers would be happy for wrestling sites since if a wrestler gets fired, injured or leaves the company the real reason is known. The promoter can no longer go on TV and lie about the reason the wrestler is no longer with the company. Nor can a promoter slander a wrestler by spewing falsehoods since the wrestling sites will tell the truth. Either that or the wrestler can go online and set the record straight.

Yes, there are bad journalists out there but most savvy people get their news from more than one source. In my dealings there are plenty of reputable journalists (and wrestling sites) out there. Remember that these journalists work with little or no pay, get zero name recognition and have numerous wrestlers that hate them. For that I say "thank you" for all the work you do. To the wrestlers (and fans) who hate these journalists I say "they are not the enemy"!
