WRESTLING COLUMNS
Happy New Year
from Online World of Wrestling
January 1, 2002 - By Brad Dykens
Well whatta ya know.. another year is behind us, and in terms of wrestling, WHAT A YEAR IT WAS!
For insiders like me and some of my staff, it was an incredible ride full of the good, the bad, the ugly and the disgustingly ugly..
The Year 2002: 100 words or less. (Please don't count)
WCW Turmoil, Stone Cold wins the rumble, Jericho & Benoit turn it up, Angle loses title to the Rock, byebye Chyna, Triple H & Austin get intense, Dudleys dominate, Lawler & Kat fired, WCW folds, Austin wins WWF Title at Wrestlemania and joins McMahon, WWFe purchases WCW, Austin & Triple H dominate the WWF, Triple H serious injury, Edge wins KotR, DDP stalks Taker's wife, WCW invades the WWF, Rock wins WCW title, titles change on a weekly basis, Rob Van Dam dominatd hardcore & some main events, Saturn goes bonkers, Eddy Guerrero released, Edge & Christian separate, Jericho finally establishes himself, WWF eliminated WCW, Mick Foley resigns, Nature Boy Ric Flair turns WWF upside-down, The Hardyz break up, Undertaker turns heel, Jericho wins undisputed title.
Online World of Wrestling "Comeback of the Year" & "Most Valuable Player" Awards.
The beginning of the year saw Steve Austin begin huge triumphant return, winning the WWF Royal Rumble, then anialiating nemisis Triple H at No Way Out, capturing the WWF Title at Wrestlemania, joining Vince McMahon in the process. By this time, Austin was at the top of his game and locked himself in as the World Wrestling Federation's MVP, consistantly putting on 5-star performances night after night and giving the fans their money's worth, even though unentertaining times.
Online World of Wrestling "Assclown" Award.
The story of the year had to have been Vince McMahons aquisition of World Championship Wrestling from Turner Broadcasting. The real story here is how Vince (the evil Genius) fumbled the idea of WCW vs WWF horribly, the angle that wrestling fans had been waiting for decades to see. .
Online World of Wrestling "Injury of the year" Award.
An unfortunate happening this year saw Triple H fall to a major injury, missing the last 7 months of the year, and completly bypassing the WCW/WWF fiasco. Some would say the injury was more fortunate than unfortunate.
Another injury was to the Canadian Crippler Chris Benoit, whose neck had finally sucumbed to the pressure of the WWF schedule. Amidst this biggest push of his career, Benoit disappeared just after a remarkable performance at King of the Ring and hasn't been seen since.
Online World of Wrestling "Most Improved Wrestler" Award.
Chris Jericho finally got a shot at the top, and handed the ball, big time.. Jericho became the undisputed World Champion at the conclusion of the year..
Online World of Wrestling "Same ol Same ol" Award.
The Rock was his same old self all year long and the fans ate it up.
Online World of Wrestling "Stuffing" Award.
The McMahons shoved themselves down our throats time after time after time, and the fans hated it, but the McMahons failed to see it. They would take themselves off TV and feed us some other crap and then put themselves back. When WCW was abolished for good, Shane & Stephanie's roll was greatly reduced, but we seemed to get a triple dosage of a Vince McMahon's "Kiss My Ass Club".
Online World of Wrestling "Diva of the Year" Award.
Lita gets the nod for her consistant in-ring work, not her poor acting skills. The perfect roll model for girls she has a great look and actually has talent, something most of the WWF Divas lack.
Online World of Wrestling "Tag Team of the Year" Award.
The Dudley Boyz dominated the tag team division this year and is actually the only team to survive the year without breaking up! Edge & Christian and The Hardy Boyz both had bitter break ups due to one jealous partner.
Online World of Wrestling "Heel Turn of the Year" Award.
1) Steve Austin at Wrestlemania.
2) Triple H the day after Wrestlemania.
3) William Regal joins the Alliance.
4) Chris Jericho's gradual heel-turn late in the year.
5) Kurt Angle joining the Alliance.
