John Proulx wrote: Eadie’s first WWF appearances were not as one of the machines. In fact, he did appear in WWF in the early ’80s as the Masked Superstar. One of my earliest memories of the WWF is of the Masked Superstar taking on Eddie Gilbert (at the time, Gilbert was either teaming with Curt Hennig, which would make it sometime around 1981-82) and putting a clawhold on Gilbert’s head. I remember Gilbert bleeding, and the WWF put a big red “X” over the screen to protect us youngsters from the horrible sight. This was, to my knowledge, Gilbert’s last appearance in the WWF.

Dave Barton wrote (In Response to John Proulx’s comments): This is incorrect. As the Superstar, he did face a young Eddie Gilbert in the WWF around 1982-1983, but the angle is all wrong. It was Blackjack Mulligan who would use the Claw, drawing blood on his opponents, requiring the large red “X” on the screen. Superstar delivered his WWF finisher, the neckbreaker, to Gilbert on the concrete floor “breaking Eddie Gilbert’s neck”, as a means of sending a message to WWF Champ Bob Backlund (as Backlund was Gilbert’s “mentor” at that time). Superstar was pencilled in to defeat Backlund for the WWF Title, but a number of circumstances changed the plan, leading to Iron Sheik winning the belt instead. Either way, the plan was to have an interim champion just to put the belt on Hulk Hogan.
