Martyn Russell wrote: Wrestler Jackie Pallo, one of British wrestling’s biggest stars in the 1960s, died at the age of 80 on 11th Febuary 2006. Pallo, who fought before the Big Daddy/Giant Haystacks era, died at his home in Ramsgate, Kent, after battling with cancer. Jackie Pallo was born Jack Gutteridge on June 12 1926 above a gym at Islington, London. His father, also Jack, was a boxing trainer who worked alongside his twin brother Dick. Jackie had a number of fights as an amateur boxer, then went into wrestling. Pallo appeared on This Is Your Life in 1973, attracting many celebrities of the day. Guest appearances in TV shows included Are You Being Served? and The Avengers, during which he was famously knocked out by actress Honor Blackman during a fight scene. He was 5 ft 6 in tall and 11½ stones in weight. Pallo had no difficulty presenting himself as a convincing “bad guy”. His nemesis in the ring was Mick McManus. Mark “Rollerball” Rocco, Kendo Nagasaki and Big Daddy also proved worthy opponents in the ring. Pallo was known by his fans as Mr TV. Former commentator Reg Gutteridge – Pallo’s cousin – described him as “a great performer and a lovely guy”. His son Jackie junior, who fought tag-team matches with Pallo, said he had been “a bombastic character right to the end”. Pallo is also survived by his wife Trixie who became known for watching her husband at ringside.
