Barend headlined throughout the world, but was something of a 60s cultural icon in Hawaii where he, King Curtis Iaukea, Lord James Blears and Gentleman Ed Francis were household names as the Saturday television show used to get a 50 market share. Barend played a crazy character and was known for outlandish interviews which were among the best of their era.
