10 COMMANDMENTS FOR RESEARCHERS
you must read this page before starting your research
The Online World of Wrestling Website is happy (and proud) to be a website for wrestling fans and by wrestling fans. Sure we get imput from the workers themselves but really everything on the site is for you, the average mark. As you have likely discovered by now, the OWW project is a mission with unlimited tasks that cannot be undertaken by a single person. That is why I enlist the passionate fans of the world to help out by tracking down rare pieces of information to make the site more complete. With over 5000 profiles and counting, there sure are plenty of blanks that need to be filled and everyone should be encouraged to contribute a little bit to help the cause. Even the tiniest piece of information such as a hometown, or a real name, makes a big difference. I, the puppet master of OWW, personally add the information to the website to make it neat & tidy.
Researchers come and go, some longer than others, and I am grateful to everyone who helps. But sometimes I find myself giving a speech about what to do, what not to do, what is encouraged, and what is discouraged. So I figured I’d play God again and create a 10 Commandments for Researchers (Similar to the 10 Commandments for Columnists). Here we go.
01. COPY & PASTING: First and most important rule of researching for OWW is DO NOT COPY/PASTE information from another website or send something in word for word as it appears in other publications. Unless it’s a direct quote and that should be a rare instance. Before you hit that send button, try to format the information as close as possible to the way it will appear on OWW. Become familiar with how things are laid out. More on that later.
02. SEND IN BULK: This is a minor request. Instead of sending each piece of information in a separate email and filling up my inbox, perhaps you could save and compile a list of information and send it at the end of the week, or every two weeks. A lot easier for me.
03. OFFICIAL RESEARCHERS: Obviously we cannot add every single person who contributes as an official researcher. We do try to list people who make significant contributions on the Content Contributors page. However, if a researcher’s contributions become consistantly impressive and adhere to the guidelines, we have no problems adding you to our official crew of researchers. Do not ask if you can be an official researcher. It’s more like “don’t call us, we’ll call you” scenario. You have to earn it and we will recognize it when you are ready for it and you will be rewarded.
04. BECOMING ANAL: The reason OWW is so popular is because it’s neat, tidy and easy to navigate. That’s all due to one thing.. I’m Anal! For those of you who may not have heard that term before, you should know that it just means I pay extreme attention to detail. I try to make the website look as uniform and professional as possible. So here are some examples of how to format the information that you send in:
Tips for Researchinga) Dates. This is how you should send in dates “January 10, 2005″ — NOT 01/10/05 or 10/01/05 (I can never tell if you mean January 10th or October 1st).. Also don’t use 10th or 1st just put a comma.. and don’t put Jan 10, 2005 — it only takes a milisecond to type the whole word “January 10, 2005″ b) Results. Don’t bother sending in results for WWE, TNA, or ROH because that’s pretty well taken care of (except for WWE house shows, you can send those). For indy results, we don’t require a lot of detail; All we need is a date, location, winners and losers, managers, title ramifications, and very basic storyline information. Here is an example: January 10, 2005–Obsession Wrestling Federation in Somewheresville, Texas: Jeffrey Simpson b Fred Taylor w/Psycho Sam, Killer Kowboy vs Jim Bob ended in a draw after Giant Abdullah interfered, Harry Amps b Tick Toc Ted to win the Television title, Assassin #10 vs Greg Schits ended in a NO CONTEST, Dale Thunderfoot b Cowboy Gary Todd in an Indian Strap match, Captain Tredmill & Loverboy Simms b Bill & Ted (Ted turned on Bill).. c) Title History. When compiling a title history for a specific wrestler. Here is how I like it: I’ll add more as I think of them, but my advice is to just become familiar with the profiles and how they are layed out. Take some time to notice how mostly every page has uniform qualities. I, as the Puppet Master, appreciate your efferts a great deal. Thank you. |
