WRITING WRESTLING TELEVISION WITH J.J. DILLON IS THE TOPIC IN LATEST INSTALLMENT OF BREAKTHROUGH DVD SERIES, GUEST BOOKER.
Though most likely remembered for his tenure in front of the camera as the shortcut-taking manager of the venerable Four Horsemen, JJ Dillon held a very important role in the WWE after that, behind the scenes. Dillon, along with Pat Patterson and Vince McMahon, wrote the WWE’s television product during his tenure there, which spanned from 1989-1996. Therefore, it is most appropriate that the latest edition of the Guest Booker DVD series, titled “Writing Wrestling Television,” features Dillon as the booker of note.
This edition features Dillon revealing the tricks of the trade for wrestling TV production. He reveals many tidbits about the process – from the writing, to the booking, to the actual production, culled from his firsthand experiences in the WWE. Dillon also performs the trademark live booking session that has come to make the DVD series noteworthy with fans of the wrestling business.
After taking the viewer through an overview of the writing process, JJ is given a fictional, interpromotional Supercard consisting of a lineup of early 90s talent. Dillon’s task is to then write one month of weekly television to illustrate a proper lead-up and advancement of the angles. In closing, Dillon then books the Supercard.
KayfabeCommentaries.com co-owner Sean Oliver says although important, the Supercard is not the “main event” of the disc. “Unlike our other editions, here the final Supercard is just a tool to allow JJ to illustrate the craft of weaving storylines through a four week TV schedule,” he says. “We put together a great card for him to use, mind you. But this edition is spotlighting specifically the use of a syndicated ‘A’ and ‘B’ show as well as a Saturday night network special over a four week period, to advance the pay-per-view angles.”
