Dr. Keith Lipinski Show Recap (ROHtastic Edition with Gabe Sapolsky & Nigel McGuinness)
By Brian Cooper of BigVanVader.com
Gabe Sapolsky Recap
Keith begins by asking the all-important question: who won the squad off at the Request Is Earned PPV between Tank Toland and Sara Del Ray? Gabe refuses to divulge such information and hints that it might still be going on. “That’s tremendous” adds a delighted Doctor who’s money is on Del Ray. Keith then asks if the purpose of the PPV’s is to appeal to the die-hard ROH fans or in attracting new fans to the product? Gabe answers with a bit of both. Gabe admits that there isn’t much indication at present about how the PPV’s are positively affected business although there has been some up-swing.
The Doctor asks if there will be a three hour pay-per-view down the line? Gabe replies that he is happy working with the two. Onto Morishima, Keith asks about the 25 August defense at the Manhattan Center against Bryan Danielson. Gabe reminds Keith that it might be Claudio or Albright defending against Danielson in a glorious display of kayfabe. Gabe says Bryan is holding up great with his shoulder since being back. ROH in Japan wasn’t even in Gabe’s wildest dreams a few years ago, gladly Gabe doesn’t parlay what was.
Keith compares the Japanese and American crowds, Gabe says that you can’t compare the two. Gabe was impressed with the more women and children than is synomynous in the States. Gabe goes on to say that their are less Japanese fans that try to get themselves over then their American counterparts. Gabe then compares the Japanese fans to a movie-goer. The Doctor demands Go Shiozaki in the US. Gabe says he will work on Shiozaki and numerous other guys for 2008. A technical fault leads to a must-hear “hello, hello” by the good Doctor and one in return by the booker-man. Gabe owns up to marking-out in Japan.
Onto Mike Quackenbush. Gabe puts over the Chikara guys and the relationship between ROH and Chikara, and scheduling permitting, ROH fans should see more of Quackenbush in 2008. Gabe says that Cary Silkin is PISSED that he is giving away $10,000 at the impending Tag Team tournament. Onto the UK, Gabe confirms that the October show won’t be going ahead but hopes to sort out a new date very soon.
Moving onto contracts, Gabe confirms that twenty ROH guys are under contract although he doesn’t answer Keith’s health insurance question.
Gabe says that he isn’t really actively looking for any new talent. What other wrestling does Gabe watch? Gabe says he doesn’t have much free-time but is always up to date with Dragon Gate and Pro-Wrestling NOAH. What would Gabe be doing if ROH had gone out of business during the Perverted-Justice.com scandal? Gabe replies that he’d probably be a cab driver as he’d always like to get behind a wheel. Gabe puts over the FIP product and suggests people to check out some FIP action. Keith asks if we’re going to see Necro Butcher in ROH again anytime soon? Gabe replies that he is happy with Necro Butcher in FIP.
Keith asks about the Earthquake and Typhoon in Japan (the actual natural disasters rather then the WWE Team of Lore). Gabe replies that it was the other side of the island although he felt the tremors. On the Straight-Shootin’ Series, “We have nothing lined up at the moment.” How would Gabe like fans to remember Ring Of Honor in 2007? Gabe says simply as a year of growth. The two the both agree that the Briscoes are the greatest tag team in the World. Gabe finishes by giving an update on Kobashi and says never say never on MISAWA IN ROH! Nigel McGuinness Recap
Nigel begins by showing some ROH love and talks of the first PPV. He tells the good Doctor when he was out-and-about in New York with Roderick Strong and Colt Cabana how a kid asked only for his autograph. Keith asks about Jonny Fairplay in ROH as seen on VH1 and the Supercard of Honor II show. Nigel says he had no problems with Fairplay although he has a bit of an ego. Keith asks about the pressure before headlining in Japan against Morishima. Nigel says he felt a lot of pressure for match quality. Nigel talks about the Japanese crowd and their “HORI SHIT” chant. Keith is most intrigued what match-ups and moves led the fans to chant Hori Shittings.
More Natural Disaster talk, Nigel talks about his experiences from the nineteenth (!) floor of his hotel. Nigel says he has done five or six NOAH tours at present. Keith asks about the Takayama KICK TO THE HEAD. Nigel says that Takayama could’ve taken him at any moment and the kicks hurt. On NOAH workers he would love to come to the states, Nigel would like to see Ricky Marvin who he puts over as being one of the greatest. Nigel says that Too Cold Scorpio was the guy who gave him the best advice in Japan.
Keith asks if he should call Nigel King Nigel after wearing the King Of Europe Cup? Nigel talks about wrestling for Brian Dixon and how he didn’t progress al that much wrestling for him. Keith asks about Nigel’s Observer comments about working for WWE and more importantly his Ultimate Warrior face-paint and ULTIMATE WARRIOR PANTS. Nigel talks about how he enjoys ROH; the pay, the schedule, and freedom to have great matches but says no-one should turn down a million dollar guaranteed contract. Onto TNA, Nigel doesn’t see him getting revenge against Shark Boy anytime soon, going further into his TNA dealings.
Â
Dr. Keith asks about wrestling Morishima with Nigel saying how much better looking he is than the ROH World Champion. Nigel says he has had three horrible concussions in his career and talks of hiding his vomit down the plughole after the Danielson hour match so no-one knew how bad-shape he was in. On the PPV match with Danielson, Nigel says Danielson has modified his style and is “more-to-the- point.” What wrestling does Nigel McGuiness watch today? Nigel name-checks Kenta Kobashi, Marty Jones and Fit Finlay as well as Steve Austin.
Nigel says his injuries are holding out reasonably well but says he ignored advice to have injections into his shoulder. Nigel then lists numerous other recent injuries that have occurred inside the ring. Keith asks what Nigel thinks of Kevin Thorn copying the Tower of London? Nigel jokes that it’s more like the Dungeons of London and repeats the old imitation line. Book talk. Nigel likens his book to the Chris Jericho book in telling his origins as a pro-wrestler. Keith asks when he can read the book? “When it’s published!” Nigel then talks about the screenplay with pop star Kylie Minogue in mind?!
Briscoe talk. Nigel can see the Briscoes doing for the tag titles what Samoa Joe did to the singles title and calls them “Good, honest people.” Keith then imagines a glorious community of Briscoes. On the future, Nigel talks about wanting to
wrestle the likes of Danielson, Morishima, Brent Albright, Roderick Strong and Austin Aries. Pro Wrestling Guerrilla talk as he will be working their incredible looking BOLA tournament and debuting for the group. On his first round match. “It’ll be a pleasure to lariat him in the face,” McGuinness says of Rocky Romero (note, now Austin Aries in quite the dandy match) Nigel finishes by giving Dr. Keith sight-seeing tips for his forthcoming trip to Blighty. Congressional Inquiry
July 30, 2007
The drugs in pro-wrestling story got a lot more interesting late last week. Congress of the United States, as part of their ongoing investigation into illegal use of steroids and other drugs in sports, has request WWE provide the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform with copies of their current and past drug testing policies, copies of all test results, and any other related documents and communications the company has had concerning drugs and or drug related deaths in the industry.
This is, to say the least, HUGE. The document I read was 7 pages and covers every possible drug or health related document or communication WWE has ever made. It also states WWE or WWF so they are intending to go back at least 7 years. From my understanding this is only a “request†and WWE doesn’t have to comply, but I would assume that if WWE did not cooperate pressure would be on to subpoena them and get these documents anyway. I’m not a lawyer so I don’t know if they would be able to get a subpoena, but from a public relations stand point, I would think WWE is going to have to comply with the request, to avoid looking guilty of trying to cover something up.
With all the Heat put on WWE following the Benoit family deaths, and their insistence that their wellness policy is working, refusing to submit documents to back up those claims are going to look very suspicious. As much as I feel that the Benoit tragedy and drug use in pro-wrestling are, for the most part, unrelated this inquiry could really shake up the industry.
Regardless of the end result of this investigation, assuming that it does take place, this industry is likely going to be changed forever. No one’s closet is completely skeleton free, and with the cloud of secrecy the wrestling industry is used to being under, having outsiders looking into WWE’s closets is going to be a very hard pill for them to swallow. With a publicly traded company perception and public image is very important so any dirt or even perceived dirt that gets dug up could have a profound impact on stock prices, sponsorship deals, and or TV ratings.
I think one of the toughest questions WWE will be facing is why testing slackened off or outright disappeared between the introduction of strict testing following Vince McMahon’s indictment for steroid distribution in late 1993 (he was acquitted of ALL charges) and the introduction of WWE’s current Wellness program, which was introduced in 2006 after Eddie Guerrero’s death. There is almost a 10-year span between the two policies where I don’t believe WWE did any testing. There may have been some testing during that time but certainly nothing like what was done initially in 1993 or currently now in 2007, and I can tell you first hand I was never tested, or even heard of anyone getting tested during my 5+ years with the company.
It should be a very interesting next few months. I hope this inquiry ends up doing the industry and those who work in it more good than harm, but only time will tell. I think public scrutiny is the only way to decisively make a difference and clean up whatever drug problems exist in the industry. Cleaning up these problems may end up hurting the business in the short term, but if it saves lives or improves the health of the boys in the long term, it could end up a huge positive for the industry.
There is of course the possibility that like the past inquires into baseball; absolutely nothing productive will come out of this. When all is said and done, much like in baseball where Barry Bonds is still hitting those home runs, steroid enhanced physiques, may continue to dominate wrestling, and a lot of time and money will be spent accomplishing nothing.
Here’s hoping that is not the case and something productive happens,
Lance Storm

King to visit Akron in the Raw
WWE’s talented Booker thrived on a tag team, now shows much flair working alone in ring
By Scott Fishman Miami Herald
Published on Thursday, Aug 02, 2007
After taking off time to recuperate from nagging injuries, World Wrestling Entertainment’s King Booker left the SmackDown! kingdom with Queen Sharmell to invade Raw.
He was sent to Raw during the show’s 3-hour draft special. A talented wrestler who made a very successful transition from prominent tag-team glory to singles’ stardom, he is ready to conquer new quests.
”I’m a soldier,” said Booker, who will battle Jeff Hardy when WWE presents the Biggest Party of Summer at the James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron.
”Just give me my gun, and I’ll go into battle. It doesn’t matter if I’m on Raw or SmackDown! I really don’t want to be on ECW. If I got drafted to ECW, I probably would have resigned to be honest.
”Being drafted back to Raw is a great thing. I’m looking forward to going in there and just continuing what I do, and that’s wrestle, performing and giving the crowd what they want to see.”
At 42, King Booker has done just about everything he set to accomplish and more. However, having his off-screen wife and on-screen Queen Sharmell by his side has reignited the competitive fire within him.
”Her and I are a team,” said Booker, who married Sharmell, a former Nitro Girl dancer and performer for World Championship Wrestling, in 2005. ”Business is always business, and personal is always personal. When we are at our job, we know we have a job to do. We do it, leave it at the job and don’t take it home with us.
”When we’re at home, it’s totally different. It is from a different standpoint.”
Along with his constant road schedule, Booker helps run a wrestling school with his brother and former tag-team partner Stevie Ray near his home in Houston. The training academy runs events under the Pro Wrestling Alliance banner.
Students not only obtain needed and necessary experience in front of crowds but also watch first-hand WWE superstars like Matt Hardy, past superstars like Too Cold Scorpio and TNA’s Team 3D (formerly ECW and WWE’s Dudley Boys).
King Booker wants to give back.
”Wrestling took me places I never imagined,” said Booker, the youngest of eight children who didn’t let growing up in a rough neighborhood deter him from his goals. ”I never dreamed of being a wrestler. It was just something that worked out for me. I was just a neighborhood kid and nobody around was wrestling.
”It was like a hobby and an escape where I could be a different person at the moment. It wasn’t about the money. It was just about having fun. Next thing you know some people call me and offer me a contract. Then it became a job, and then it became a career.
That is the way you have to look at it because you never know where it’s going to take you.”
Booker’s career began to take off in WCW as a member of Harlem Heat with his brother Stevie Ray. The two enjoyed 11 reigns as world tag team champions.
Women’s wrestling trailblazer Sherri Martel, born Sherri Russell, helped lead the charge as their manager during successful times. Martel, a WWE Hall of Famer, passed away at age 49 on June 15.
”It’s a tragic event,” said Booker, who gave away Sherri, the bride, at her wedding. ”My mother passed just about the same age as Sherri.
”She was great. She was the catalyst and the one who made Harlem Heat who we were. She made us bigger than life. It was like she was my sister. We called her Sister Sherri, and that is pretty much what she was to us. We know Sherri is in a better place.”
As the superstar moves along to another phase of his career, the King Booker persona remains.
”I don’t ever think I’ll be Booker T again,” said the king, who began his monarchy by winning the 2006 King of the Ring. ”I’m King Booker in the ring, and the people want to see me as King Booker. That character has really taken off. It has really gotten over the top that I think we’re just going to keep on rolling with it and see where it goes. It’s always good to have royalty around.”
Also at the Akron event, John Cena and Randy Ortonwill battle in the WWE Championship Match; Lashley will take on Umaga in a Special Challenge Match and Paul London and Brian Kendrick will fight Lance Cadeand Trevor Murdochin in a World Tag Team Championship Match.
Candice and Mickie James will face Melina and Jillian in a RAW Diva Tag Team Match; Santino Marella will take on Snitsky; Val Venis will battle Sly (Maryse) and Cody Rhodes will fight William Regal.
Those who can’t get enough of King Booker can listen to his radio show Tea Time with King Booker online at the 790 Sports Animal Web site.
