WWE event an eye-opener for reporter
Posted 10/10 @ 7:06pm by Allison Grant

If someone told me a couple of weeks ago that I would be attending a pro wrestling event, I would have laughed. Then I would have refered that person to Matt Bishop, the State News hockey reporter who loves wrestling.

I guess the joke is on me however, as I attended WWE Smackdown at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday night.

I’ll try anything once, so when a friend offered up a free night in a suite at Joe Louis Arena during this coveted wrestling event, you better believe I took it.
Honestly, it was fun. Everything about it is fake – from the bad acting to the nicknames (The Undertaker?), to the moves and hits – but it was still fun to see how the wrestlers pulled it off.

Also, seeing the type of crowd that the WWE pulls rivals any country concert I have ever been to. Quality/hilarious people watching is always a good time in my book.

The only wrestler I had even remotely heard of, The Undertaker – who stands at almost seven – feet tall and weighs 305 pounds – faced off with a wrestler who didn’t even come up to his chest, and probably weighed around 220 pounds. Who the heck came up with that matchup? Obviously The Undertaker won the fight, without really trying, and with a whole bunch of acting involved.

That was the only match I really remember, because The Undertaker was the only name I semi-recognized. I was distracted the rest of the time by the deli and desert trays and the endless supply of beverages.

All in all, while I don’t plan on going out of my way to attend another pro wrestling event, or to even watch it on TV, I am glad I got to experience it once. The over-the-top theatrics and ostentatious set displays were something only a bunch of steroid filled men in tights could pull off.

Nic Cage rolling around with grown men
Date : October 12, 2007 Writer : Kirby Kegar

Nicolas Cage is set to bounce from the ropes – heh – in a new wrestling pic from screenwriter Robert Siegel (“Homeland Security”).

Ol’ Ghost Rider will don the shorts of Randy “The Ram” Robinson, a 1980s-era star pro wrestler who has become a burnt-out shell of his former self. After he has a heart attack during a small-time match, a doctor tells him he could die if he fights again, says The Hollywood Reporter.

In an effort to build a new life, Robinson takes a job at a deli, moves in with an aging stripper and tries to build a relationship with her son. But the prospect of a rematch with his old nemesis the Ayatollah proves too tempting to resist, even if it means risking his life.

The pic, called simply “The Wrestler”, is in development at Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures.

Life, death of a ‘Bruiser’
By Alex Marvez, South Florida Sun-Sentinel
October 12, 2007

The murder/suicide of World Wrestling Entertainment star Chris Benoit and his family was pro wrestling’s biggest news story ever.

But almost two decades earlier, the stabbing death of Frank “Bruiser Brody” Goodish by a co-worker received scant media coverage. That is a shame, considering such attention could have influenced what followed legally.

Goodish died in July 1988 after a locker-room confrontation with fellow wrestler Jose “Invader” Gonzalez in Puerto Rico. Two recently released Brody biographies cast a negative light on the police investigation and trial that followed.

Bruiser Brody (Crowbar Press, $24.95) and Brody (ECW Press, $19.95) include damning claims against Gonzalez, who successfully argued he acted in self-defense. Some of Brody’s co-workers believe the stabbing stemmed from decade-long animosity that began when Gonzalez and Brody worked in World Wrestling Entertainment.

Both books detail witness intimidation and character assassination that created a favorable courtroom atmosphere for Gonzalez, who was cleared of murder charges.

Bruiser Brody author Emerson Murray said the murder investigation and Puerto Rican legal process “would have been looked at much more carefully” in the post-Benoit world. Murray said he unsuccessfully tried to reach Gonzalez for his side of the story.

“Things were so skewed with the murder investigation,” said Larry Matysik, who penned Brody with Brody’s widow Barbara. “All Barbara wanted to know is why this happened.”

Brody was an international superstar, having established himself as a Japanese headliner in the early 1980s.

Some promoters had problems dealing with Brody, especially when it involved match finishes and payoffs. Brody was extremely protective of his in-ring image to remain “strong” in Japan, which is why he was rarely pinned in the U.S.

The 6-foot-6, 285-pound Brody would sometimes bully and embarrass inferior opponents. He did that to Gonzalez during one WWE match that may have laid the groundwork for their fatal encounter. But Brody also was known as being loyal to his friends and savvy enough to thrive in an unscrupulous industry.

Highlighted by a spectacularly gory photo collection, Bruiser Brody features interviews with more than 100 Brody associates.

Brody takes a different approach. Matysik serves as a sympathetic biographer who worked professionally with Brody as a St. Louis wrestling promoter. Barbara Goodish tells a love story that began during Brody’s Australian tours in the 1970s.

“Barbara and I both agreed we had to deal with how Frank died, but the story really should be as much about how he lived,” Matysik said. “He entertained thousands of people and lived life the way he wanted to.”

NEWS AND NOTES: Total Nonstop Action Wrestling star Kurt Angle was arrested Sept. 28 on a drunk-driving charge. Angle is slated to headline Sunday’s Bound for Glory pay-per-view vs. Sting.

• Five months after undergoing knee surgery, Shawn Michaels has resumed his feud with new World Wrestling Entertainment champion Randy Orton.

• Rikishi is now wrestling in TNA as Junior Fatu.

• Former National Wrestling Alliance President Howard Brody has started a fantasy wrestling league at slamaddict.com.

Wrestling great Tony Atlas still thinks he’s relevant. Nah.
By Matt Deuerlein
For the Pocono Record
October 11, 2007

Many remember Tony Atlas, a former WWE Tag Team Champion better known these days for his blundering on MTV’s “True Life: I Am a Pro Wrestler,” as his independent show was being shut down for not having the proper licensing.

He has since faded from the limelight, and actually, hasn’t been heard from for years.

Until this past week, that is, when Atlas was attending an Ohio Valley Wrestling show. OVW, for many years now, has been what a Triple-A baseball team is to the major leagues – the final stages of development before being called up to the main roster. Atlas was, according to 1wrestling.com, evaluating matches, and approached current ECW World Champion CM Punk and said the amount of wrist tape he used was not “what the office was looking for.”

Punk, who as a main eventer (even though it’s a C-level show, it’s still a main event slot) may know a thing or two about what the office is looking for, went out to the ring with his tape done the same way as it’s always done.

There was then a backstage altercation between Punk and Atlas, where Atlas commented on the attitudes of certain workers, all the while staring at Punk. Punk, of course, took exception to this, and asked Atlas if he even knew who he was. According to reports from the Wrestling Observer, Atlas then said that even though he’s over 50, he could still kick Punk’s ass. This is just another shining example of class from the man who witnessed the murder of Bruiser Brody in Puerto Rico, but refused to testify.

This, of course, will all blow over, but it’s funny to see how even Tony Atlas thinks he’s relevant in today’s wrestling scene.

In local news, there’s a string of big shows coming to the area at the end of October and beginning of November. Northeast Wrestling will be presenting two big nights of wrestling action, starting Oct. 27 at Delaware Valley High School in Milford. TNA World Champion Kurt Angle is scheduled for action, as well as Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart and Abyss. NEW will be attempting to restore the glory of Scranton’s Catholic Youth Center the following Saturday night, Nov. 3, with Angle taking on Christian Cage in the main event and Samoa Joe taking on AJ Styles in the undercard.
