  3. GUEST COLUMN: “WWE WrestleMania 30 Match Card and Rumors” by Eric Gargiulo

We are only a few months out but it appears that the dust is starting to settle around WWE WrestleMania 30. A new report indicates that the company have their top matches in place, some you expected, and one that is a bit of a shocker.

Dave Meltzer breaks down the card as it stands today in the latest Wrestling Observer newsletter. Meltzer is quick to point out that these matches could change between now and the event, yet this is what the company is working with today. The biggest question up to this point has been around John Cena and his match. Big Dave says that the company has a working plan in place.

“As of last week, Cena vs. Bray Wyatt, believe it or not, was the main event planned for the show. Vince McMahon stated to the writers and producers that “Cena is the main event until his time is clearly up. That man feeds us!”

Wow! I was stunned as anyone to read that report in the Observer. Bray Wyatt in the Mania headliner against Cena doesn’t even seem plausible at this point. It is certainly an intriguing match, I’ll give them that. I could easily see the match at Mania 31 if Wyatt was pushed hard in 2014 but it just seems way too soon at this point.

All of that said, I was probably even more surprised when the company pushed The Miz to the top spot at Mania 27 so in that respect, this isn’t out of the question. I liked Wyatt initially but I just don’t see “top spot” in the guy just yet. The WWE will have to push Bray hard over the next few months if they expect fans to buy in.

This match could be a diversion or a backup plan. Hulk Hogan has remained awfully quiet the last several weeks. Many believe that Hogan will have some part in Cena’s match at Mania. I think the working plan is for Cena vs. Hogan. However, most don’t expect Hogan to be able to physically work a match. I think that this is the B-plan if Hogan can’t work.

Meltzer also reports that CM Punk vs. Triple H is on the books as well. It’s funny because I was almost certain that this match would have wound up on last year’s show. Recent actions would certainly indicate that this is the plan. I don’t think anyone would have a real problem with it. Now Punk can get his win over Hunter and people can stop complaining about Night of Champions 2011. Meltzer does note that Punk’s spot could wind up going to Roman Reigns.

Daniel Bryan vs. Shawn Michaels is another highly rumored match. Meltzer reports that the Heartbreak Kid has told friends that he is not wrestling. On the other hand all of the interactions between Bryan and HBK in recent months would lead you to think that something is brewing. This is a match right here that could go down as one of the all-time Mania best if it happens.

Randy Orton vs. Batista for the WWE world championship would be the headliner. Batista will be coming back and the plans as of now are for him to win the Rumble and challenge Orton. I think they could have used Batista a lot better than this. Batista and Orton have wrestled numerous times and I don’t recall being blown away by any of their matches. It’s one of the weaker WWE title matches to headline Mania in recent memory in my opinion.

Now the WWE did throw out a curveball this past Monday when Brock came out and announced his intentions to be WWE champion. My gut feeling here is that Brock’s program for the title comes after Mania. Quite frankly it wouldn’t surprise me if this was all set up as swerve to get people thinking, yet nothing changes at the end of the day.

Finally, Brock Lesnar is expected to wrestle The Undertaker. This one is a couple of years in the making going back to the confrontation that Taker and Brock had at a UFC event. I still find it hard to believe that Taker would wrestle such a physical match at his age. The Undertaker has had a streak of great matches in recent years at Mania. Until that changes I would expect nothing less from him or this match.
