A sell out crowd was on hand as New England Championship Wrestling presented the 5th Annual IRON 8 Championship Tournament, Saturday night, May 31 at the National Guard Armory in Quincy, MA.The evening began when all 8 competitors were announced to the ring and posed together as a group with the 2008 IRON 8 Championship trophy. The competitors were Gran Akuma, “The Golden Greek” Alex Arion, “The Real Deal” Brandon Locke, “Japanese Nightmare” Kahagas, “Exotic” Kristian Frost, Julio Dinero, “The Natural” Scott Osbourne, and defending champion “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards.
In the opening semi-final tournament contest, Gran Akuma defeated “The Exotic” Kristian Frost with a cross-arm pinning combo to advance to the IRON 8 Final.

In the second semi-final match, “The Golden Greek” Alex Arion hit a flying body-press to defeat the “Japanese Nightmare” Kahagas in a hard-hitting battle to advance to the IRON 8 Final.

In the third semi-final match of the tournament, “The Natural” Scott Osbourne with Brian Cairo scored an upset victory by pinning Julio Dinero with a back slide and his feet on the ropes.

The last semi-final tournament match was contested between two IRON 8 finalists from last year. “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards with Sean Gorman pinned “The Real Deal” Brandon Locke following a deep schoolboy.

After intermission, a special “Champions Challenge” mixed tag team match took place. The team of NECW Triple Crown Champion “The Mohawked Enforcer” Max Bauer and his partner “The Gorgeous Greek” Elektra Arion faced off with Big Rick Fuller with Brian Cairo and WWW Champion “Portuguese Princess” Ariel with Brendan Michael Thomas. As the match reached its final moments, Fuller cornered Elektra Arion. Cairo tried to get Fuller to chop “The Gorgeous Greek”. Fuller shoved his manager only to be clotheslined from the ring by Bauer. The WWW Champion charged her rival, Arion, only to be pinned following a schoolgirl roll up. Bauer and Arion were awarded the contest.

In the 5th Annual IRON 8 Championship final, “The Golden Greek” Alex Arion defeated “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards, “The Natural” Scott Osbourne, and Gran Akuma by pinning Edwards with the go ahead fall with 15 seconds left in the 45 minute regulation to win the match and the IRON 8 Championship.

After the match, Edwards uncharacteristically took the IRON 8 Trophy and gave it to Alex Arion shaking his hand.

Special note: Scott Osbourne had a rib cracked by a kick only about 15 minutes into the match and completed the match regardless, despite being in tremendous pain.

This past Sunday, June 1, New England Championship Wrestling and World Women’s Wrestling combined for a super show as part of Eddie Andelman’s 19th Annual Hot Dog Safari taking place at the Suffolk Downs racetrack in East Boston, MA.

Approximately 50,000 fans came through the turnstiles at Suffolk Downs to be part of a unique event to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s The Joey Fund, which funds medical research seeking to cure this horrible disease.

The Hot Dog Safari us the brainchild of legendary sports radio host, Eddie Andelman. Andelman is also noted for being one of the nation’s great connoisseurs of hot dogs. 19 years ago, he created this event where he got a group of people together to search the area for the best hot dog. The proceeds from the event went to The Joey Fund. Over the years, the event grew to where dozens of vendors supply a variety of hot dogs, sausages, ice cream sundaes and other treats. For a small admission price ($12 in advance, $15 at the gate, with kids under 6 free) you can eat as much as you like (no extra charge for the food) and the entire gate proceeds go to The Joey Fund.

The event draws tens of thousands each year, and for the past three years, New England Championship Wrestling has presented the featured entertainment at the event – a live professional wrestling card which was free as part of the event. This year fans were treated to a super card consisting of nearly 5 hours of action. Some of the matches from this year’s event will be broadcast in the coming weeks on NECW TV.

Congratulations to the organizers on another hugely successful event and thanks to everyone who came to enjoy it!

NECW returns to live action on Saturday night, July 12 at the National Guard Armory inb Quincy, MA for RED, WHITE & BRUISED. Tickets are on sale at all FYE locations, K.C.’s Sportscards, 33 Temple Street in Quincy Center, and online at www.NECWwrestling.com
