WWE SmackDown 05 22 2009

May 22, 2009 – Cincinnati, Ohio
Announcers: Jim Ross & Todd Grisham

World Heavyweight champion Edge + General Manager Theodore Long + Jeff Hardy: Edge came out grinning over his victory at Judgment Day over Jeff Hardy. Edge said if there was any doubt on who the face of SmackDown! was please end the debate now! Edge said he didn’t want to hear any other Superstars declaring themselves the face of this show. Edge said Judgment Day has come and gone and he is still the face of this brand. Edge said Jericho lost to Mysterio, and C.M. Punk lost to Umaga, while he (Edge) embarrassed Jeff Hardy. Edge said Hardy wasn’t in his league, adding that he is a WINNER, while Hardy is just like his legions of fans – a LOSER! Theodore Long came out and said what happened at Judgment Day was a travesty but the referees decision is final. Long said since Matt Hardy interfered in that match, he was booking Edge in a rematch with Jeff Hardy at Extreme Rules. Edge said he was better than Hardy, and bragged about bring out his Top Rope Edgecution for that match. Edge said that Jeff Hardy was a FAILURE. Jeff Hardy came out to defend himself, and suggested that they have a match tonight where the winner gets to choose the stipulation at Extreme Rules. Edge tried to weasel out of it, but Hardy said the WWE Universe wanted to see it. To prove his point, Hardy went around the crowd asking fans if they wanted to see Edge vs. Hardy tonight. Everyone said “YEAH!” Long prides himself on listening to the fans, so he agreed to make the match!

John Morrison & Cryme Tyme (Shad Gaspard & JTG) defeated Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas & Ricky Ortiz: I wasn’t sure, but this confirms that Ricky Ortiz has turned heel for absolutely no reason.

Josh Mathews & WWE Women’s champion Melina Perez + Alicia Fox: Melina said she was a competitor and she came to SmackDown! to be the best. Melina said she has the opportunity to show the WWE Universe that she is the most dominant Diva in WWE history.. Alicia Fox showed up with a message from Michelle McCool; that Women’s championship, will soon be hers……….. Melina told Alicia to go tell Michelle not to send a little girl to do a woman’s job! Melina slapped Alicia across the face!

Michelle McCool defeated Gail Kim after interference from Alicia Fox: Michelle McCool used the stolen Styles Clash (whatever they call it) to finish off Gail Kim..

Jim Ross & WWE Intercontinental champion Rey Mysterio: Rey Mysterio said Chris Jericho was talanted in the ring, but he’s also talanted at running his mouth. Rey said he was proud that he used the 619 on Jericho after Jericho said he would never hit it. Rey got the fans to chant “6! 1! 9!” Rey said he was moving on from Jericho cause he knows there are a lot of hungry guys on the SmackDown! roster looking for an opportunity. Rey said he wants to carry on the great tradition and history like former Intercontinental champions Pedro Morales, Tito Santana, and Eddie Guerrero.. Rey said he would love to honor them by being considered one of the greatest IC champions of all-time. Jim Ross asked why Rey Mysterio wrestles wearing the mask. Rey tried to claim he was not a good looking dude, but then said just kidding. Rey gave a brief history of the mask in professional wrestling. Rey said he had to earn the right to wear his mask training with his uncle (Rey Misterio). Rey said he wears the mask with pride and will never take it off during competition because being unmasked is the biggest dishonor. Wow, can you guess where they are going with this? Rey finished by saying “without my mask, I am not Rey Mysterio.” Very suddenly, Chris Jericho’s pyro went off and Jericho made his way to the ring..

C.M. Punk defeated Chris Jericho by DQ: The match ended in a DQ after Umaga attacked C.M. Punk. Umaga tied Punk up-side-down in the corner and grabbed the microphone. Umaga told Punk (yeah, Umaga speaks!) that if he thinks he’s hurt now, wait until Extreme Rules! Umaga challenged Punk to a Samoan Strap match!

Dolph Ziggler defeated R-Truth: After the match, the Great Khali (w/Ranjin Singh) chased Ziggler back to the ring, where R-Truth levelled him with a spinning for-arm. Ziggler quickly bailed out of the ring and retreated through the audience..

ANNOUNCEMENT: They showed clips of the Brooklyn Breakdown Dance-off, then the Arm-wrestling contest, and of course the backstage catfight between Layla El and Eve Torres – which has gone down for the last three weeks. Todd Grisham announced that Layla would finally wrestle Eve next week on SmackDown!

Theodore Long & Chris Jericho: Chris Jericho demanded a rematch with Rey Mysterio at Extreme Rules, and when he gets that then then he will have nothing to complain about. Theodore Long said the match has already been made and it will be No Holds Barred..

Jeff Hardy defeated World Heavyweight champion Edge: As a result, Jeff Hardy was able to choose the stipulation for their match at Extreme Rules. Hardy decided to make it a LADDER match. Editor’s Note: Is that REALLY all that smart? Since the ladder match is one of Edge’s specialties as well, and I’d guess that Edge has won more ladder matches in his career than Hardy..
