Career Highlights

In The Beginning:

Getting into the Business:

  • Greg Valentine began his career wrestling as “Johnny Fargo” a member of the Fabulous Fargos family.
  • 1972: Johnny Fargo and Don Fargo captured the NWF Tag Team titles together.
  • Greg was also sometimes announced as Johnny Valentine’s younger brother (to de-emphasize the elder Valentine’s age).

Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling:

  • 1976: Greg Valentine arrived in the Mid-Atlantic area after his father had been severely injured in a plane crash.
  • 1976: Valentine immediately won the Mid-Atlantic Television title and formed a tag team with Ric Flair.
  • 1976: Greg Valentine and Ric Flair began a year-long feud against the Anderson Brothers, Ole and Gene Anderson.
  • 1977: Greg Valentine and Ric Flair defeated Gene and Ole Anderson to capture the NWA World Tag Team titles.
  • 1977: Greg Valentine had a brutal feud against Wahoo McDaniel over the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight title.
  • ~~~This feud included Greg Valentine wearing his infamous “I BROKE WAHOO’S LEG” t-shirt.
  • 1977: Greg Valentine and Baron von Raschke captured the Mid-Atlantic Tag Team titles.
  • 1979: Greg Valentine won the NWA Canadian title.
  • 1980: Greg Valentine defeated Ric Flairfor the NWA United States Heavyweight title.

World Wide Wrestling Federation:

  • Greg Valentine was a top contender to Bob Backlund’s WWWF title.
  • Greg Valentine also feuded with Chief Jay Strongbowand broke his leg, just as he did to Wahoo McDaniel.

National Wrestling Alliance:

  • Greg Valentine later went back to the National Wrestling Alliance.
  • 1979: Greg Valentine won the NWA Canadian Title, as the Mid-Atlantic promotion’s roster also competed in Toronto.
  • 1980: Greg Valentine won another World Tag Team title with Ray “The Crippler” Stevens.
  • 1980: Greg Valentine turned against Ric Flair (who had become a fan-favorite) in a tag team match and broke his nose.
  • July 1980: Greg Valentine defeated Ric Flair for the NWA United States title but he lost it back to Flair in November.
  • 1981: Greg Valentine formed a tag team with Roddy Piper, and continued his feud with Ric Flair.
  • Greg Valentine swapped the Television title with Sweet Ebony Diamond (Rocky Johnson).

World Wide Wrestling Federation:

  • 1981: Greg Valentine re-entered the WWWF and was managed by the Grand Wizard.
  • 1981: Greg Valentine apparently won the WWWF title from Bob Backlund when the referee erroneously raised the Valentine’s arm
  • ~~~The WWWF title was announced as being held up (only in New York) until Backlund defeated Valentine in a rematch.

National Wrestling Alliance:

  • 1982: Greg Valentine renewed his feud against Wahoo McDaniel, this time with the United States title at stake.
  • 1983: Greg Valentine began feuding with Roddy Piper, and engaged in a series of dog collar matches on the Great American Bash tour!
  • 1983: Roddy Piper took the US belt from Valentine, but Valentine soon regained it by destroying Piper’s ear.
  • 1983 – Starrcade: Roddy Piper beat Greg Valentine in a Dog Collar match but it was a non-title match.
  • 1983: Greg Valentine actually became a fan-favorite when he was betrayed by Bob Orton Jr. and Dick Slater.
  • 1984: Greg Valentine finally left the NWA and began his eight-year stint in the World Wrestling Federation.

World Wrestling Federation:

  • Greg Valentine returned to the World Wrestling Federation and was managed by Lou Albano.
  • September 24, 1984: Greg Valentine defeated Tito Santana to win the WWF Intercontinental Title.
  • July 6, 1985: Tito Santana defeated Greg Valentine in a thrilling steel cage match to recapture the Intercontinental title.
  • Greg teamed w/ Flair (NWA), Beefcake (WWF), Honky (WWF), Terry Taylor (WCW), Dick Slater (WCW), Tommy Rich (AWA).
  • Greg Valentine moved to Tag Team division, teaming with Brutus Beefcake as The Dream Team managed by Lucious Johnny V.
  • August 24, 1985: The Dream Team won the WWF Tag Team titles from The US Express (Mike Rotunda and Barry Windham).
  • April 7, 1986 – WrestleMania II: The Dream Team were defeated by the British Bulldogs for the Tag Team titles.
  • The Dream Team eventually broke up, and Brutus was replaced by Dino Bravo and the team was renamed The Dream Team II.
  • Greg Valentine later formed a tag team with Honky Tonk Man, known as Rhythem and Blues managed by Jimmy Hart.
