Shawn Michaels has told friends he plans to leave after Wrestlemania.
His contract expires soon and he has long talked about wanting to spend more time with his sons as they grow up. Of course there is always the chance he will change his mind and stick around on a very limited schedule, but right now that’s said to be a long shot. WWE has just produced a DVD, Shawn Michaels: My Journey, a 3-disc set billed as Michaels’ 25 greatest matches for his 25th year in the business. There is no documentary but a sit down interview between HBK and Michael Cole talking about his mindset over the years during those matches.

Mickie James was hospitalized a couple of daya ago for treatment on a staph infection in her right leg. She is back at home convalescing and is expected back in time for Wrestlemania.

Stephanie McMahon is pregnant again with her and Triple H’s third child.
Marissa McMahon, wife of Shane, also recently gave birth to the couple’s third child. There is no new update on Shane other than is looking at possible business opportunities.

There has been talk of another gimmick Battle Royal this year at Wrestlemania. The first one took place a few years ago in Houston that was won by the Iron Sheik.

Former Playboy model Jillian Beyor, 24, is gone from developmental.

Ata Maivia, mother of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, was in attendance at the FCW tapings on Thursday. Sarona Snuka, daughter on the Superfly, made her debut in a new faction with G-Rilla, Donny Marlow (son of Haku), and Jimmy & Jules Uso (sons of Rikishi).

Charlie Haas at http://tinyurl.com/y8v27nl thanks WWE for the opportunity but says he won’t miss working for the company due to the backstage politics. He said he didn’t fit into WWE’s creative formula but is looking forward to the future. He also mentioned that wife Jackie is expecting the couple’s third child.

Paul Burchall, who was just released, and his wife are also reportedly expecting a child later this year.

The 2010 Royal Rumble pay-per-view did 490,000 buys, according to company estimates. 268,000 buys came from North America down slightly from 2009 but overall they comfortably exceeded last year’s number
(462,000) with the five dollar price increase and the addition of new international markets specifically Mexico.

ESPN radio in St. Louis has a great feature on Randy Orton at http://tinyurl.com/ybluao2. The feature is narrated by Brian Stull who is a huge wrestling fan who covers Randy’s his childhood and college years, his military stint, developmental in Louisville, becoming a WWE star, drug abuse suspensions, and much more. There is archive commentary from Bob Orton, Jim Ross, Rey Mysterio, Irv Muchnick, Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase, and Randy himself.

Rob Van Dam at www.robvandam.com posted a new blog touching upon a number of subjects including the the death of Edward “Ugama” Fatu. He
wrote: “Umaga’s toxicology report came back and to the surprise of no one, he was quite medicated. The one that gets them every time is a muscle relaxer called soma…or technically referred to as carisoprodal.
OH- the boys are hating reading this, but I’m not giving up any secret to success, I’m just telling it like it is, like I always do. I’m not rehashing old news that was just bad publicity and better off left alone. I’m talking about current life. It’s really good and I’d like my friends to continue enjoying it, so please, stay the fuck away from soma abuse. If anyone does the research on the dozens of my deceased brethren and finds that my claim that 75% or more of the drug-related deaths is inconsistent with the truth, please tell me. I bet you’ll learn something during the research.”

Bret Hart wrote a blog noting that one of the things he’s enjoyed the most about returning was meeting some of the Raw gest hosts: “I have to admit that the biggest thrill was to finally meet my teenage heroes, Cheech and Chong. I finally met up with them immediately following the Divas Pillow Fight when their heart rates had just started to come down (not so easy when you’re watching the likes of Kelly Kelly and Alicia Fox battling in their pajamas). I was surprised to hear Tommy Chong recall, in detail, his fond memories of Stampede Wrestling. Chong, who was Calgary-born and bred, took me back when he said, ‘I used to watch you when I was a kid.’ I thought to myself ‘C’mon, give me a break.’
Maybe my dad or my older brothers, but not likely me. The more we spoke, I realized that it wasn’t impossible that this one-time Calgary-kid managed to blend in with the local throngs of fans who once sat riveted to their benches taking in the world’s best pro wrestling at that time.”

Hart has a book signing at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, AZ on March 27. Hart is also doing signings with John Cena at the Wrestlemania Fan Axxess.

The inspiration for last Monday’s segments with Cheech and Chong is at http://tinyurl.com/yf3ut96.

Gerald Brisco was scouting on behalf of WWE this past weekend at the Division 3 college wrestling tournament in Iowa. Jim Ross at www.jrsbarbq.com writes in his latest blog, “As I wrote this week, if the independent wrestling scene becomes the primary source for the stars of tomorrow then the business is in trouble. Same theory applies for those brands who are trying to catch a quick fix using older stars as the thrust of their shows. Using bona fide legends to gather viewers to only see the younger guys featured is a viable concept but if the younger wrestlers aren’t made to be perceived as special then success will be hard to achieve.”

Ross also noted that his friend was on the same flight as the Iron Sheik traveling from Las Vegas to Atlanta this past weekend. Apparently Sheik was in good spirits. He was actually returning home from a bong convention at Mandalay Bay. RVD was also at the convention and noted that Sheik was entertaining people with rants on Bob Backlund and KoKo B. Ware.

WWE camera crews have shot a lot of footage in Tampa for NXT that will air over the coming weeks. They filmed some ‘day in the life’ stuff that is said to be very good. Most of the filming took place at the FCW training facility.

FCW runs on March 31 in Punta Gorda, FL, at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center. The show includes a meet and greet with Kofi Kingston. Tickets are available online at www.fcwwrestling.com. The first 500 fans in the building will receive a free FCW beach ball plus there is a Norman Smiley “Big Wiggle Contest”.

Max Damage, real name Matthew Wilson, a wrestler from New Zealand, will be getting a tryout soon. He is 6-5 and 260 pounds and was trained by former Sheepherder Rip Morgan.

Steve Austin has been answering questions from followers on his Twitter account. He said that he watches Ring of Honor and noted he recently watched, “a Joe vs. Kobashi match on a ROH DVD that was damn good.” …
Austin was announced as the Grand Marshall of the Food City 500 at Bristol, TN,  Motor Speedway on March 21.

WWE announced the main events for the UK tour in April. Raw in Liverpool, Newcastle and Glasgow has John Cena & Triple H vs. Sheamus & Big Show, and Christian vs. Randy Orton. Sheffield has Triple H vs.

TNA WRESTLING NEWS

Morgan, The Machine Guns & Generation Me in a four-way tag team match;

Ric Flair & AJ Styles in the main event and Scot Hall & Sean Waltman vs.
Kevin Nash & “some dude” (Eric Young), according to Hall via YouTube
account.

Unadvertised surprises scheduled include Rob Van Dam, Jeff Hardy, and
Sting. They also debut new opening music and credits.

Impact on Thursday night did a 1.1 rating and 1.5 million viewers.
That’s a weak number for what was largely labeled by critics as a
terrible show that featured just 14 minutes of bell-to-bell wrestling
and a bunch of promos and backstage segments. The disturbing trend of
viewers tuning out as the show progressed continued. Hour one averaged
1.26 down to 1.02 for hour two. From the opening credits every single
quarter hour decreased, aside from one, and the final quarter hour did
0.93. The biggest drop came during a quarter that featured Bubba the
Love Sponge. He actually cut a half decent promo but I guess the TNA
audience didn’t want to give him a chance. Eric Bischoff blamed the
ratings drop last week on the Olympics, but this week’s show did a worse
number building to one of the most important shows in company history.

Hulk Hogan has been all over the place promoting tonight’s show. He’s
been saying that he feels he can beat Flair, because Flair’s own wife
kicked his ass. Perhaps some irony there because didn’t Hogan’s ex wife
just kick his ass? He made it clear he’s not out to compete with WWE
just prodice a better product. He called into Peter Rosenberg’s Hot 97
radio show this morning. You can listen to the audio at
http://usershare.net/i4ha7fztcqdh.

Dixie Carter wrote on Twitter that she signed Sting to a new deal.

Sean Morley and Nikki Roxx were both removed from the TNA website
although some are claiming Roxx was never there to begin with. Both were
working on pay per appearance deals. Morley has confirmed he’s leaving
to work for CMLL in Mexico. Roxx has been off television since an ankle
injury in December. She told people over the weekend that she was
unaware of any change to her status with the company. Obviously that
means she may or may not be brought back.

Awesome Kong is still under contract and is said to be at an impasse in
regards to a full release. She has said that her much publicized legal
issue is with AT&T, and not Bubba the Love Sponge, as she wants the
phone company to release the number of the person who left a threatening
message on February 10. Her attorney wants a judge to issue a subpoena
so they can pass the information on to authorities.

AAA in Mexico officially announced the new working agreement with TNA on
it’s television show. Hector Melendez is working as an intermediary
between the two groups.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan alluded to future work with the company during a
recent interview. TNA has been contacting legends for the upcoming
Lockdown fanfest in St. Louis.

There will be another Before the Bell special starting this week on
DirectTV to promote the Destination X pay-per-view. It’s a good job
because they didn’t promote the show during Impact.

Shelly Martinez has been writing blogs of late saying she would love to
return to TNA.

Bischoff-Hervey Entertainment, Eric Bischoff and Jason Hervey’s
production company, taped a midget wrestling show pilot called Micro
Championship Wrestling at the Impact Zone in Orlando this past week. The
pilot was reportedly funded in part by TruTV. We didn’t hear much about
the taping other than they had a women’s match where they used Socker
Boppers. Pat “jobber to the stars” Tanaka was used as a referee. Jeremy
Jackson, a friend of Hervey and Bischoff, who played Hobie — the son of
David Hasselhoff in Baywatch, was planted ringside as a celebrity fan.
Not sure what TV he’s done in the last 15 years but apparently he’s the
new face of a premature ejaculation treatment in Australia. Seriously.
More on MCW at http://mcwusa.us.

Tracy Brookshaw sent out an email that was also posted on her MySpace
saying that the writing team had nothing for her and thanked her fans
and everyone at TNA for supporting her over the years. “Looking forward
to what life has in store for me,” she wrote. “God bless… and please
watch TNA Monday nights as I will still be cheering on my family
including my husband,”

Alex Marvez has a story on Dixie Carter at http://tinyurl.com/y9frdld.

Ken Anderson… Anderson at http://tinyurl.com/ybwcxet says he feels
reborn with TNA and blames John Cena and Randy Orton for conspiring
against him in WWE. “I wouldn’t say that’s what got me fired because
there were so many other things before that. It was like they were
looking for a reason to get rid of me,” he said.

Bill Goldberg did an interview pushing his upcoming projects at
http://tinyurl.com/ylr2bcp. He says that Hulk Hogan is “full of crap”
regarding talk of him returning to wrestling with TNA, adding, “I’m
putting together chicken nuggets that are shaped like dinosaurs for my
kid and I’m watching ‘SpongeBob’ as opposed to sitting up at the gym,
thinking about myself. I’ve just kind of moved on, and I don’t see it
happening.” He also noted he will be working with Jay Leno on the DIY
network show Garage Mahal.

Brian Fritz has a Q&A with Brother D-Von at http://tinyurl.com/yksdmlq
who is clearly drinking some type of kool-aid, which is fine, or just
doesn’t watch his own show. He said, “Some people thought it would be a
bad idea to bring [Hogan] in. I think a lot of us were iffy about it
because we didn’t know what he could bring to the table. Since he’s been
with TNA, he’s done nothing but good things in my opinion and I think
the ratings are showing it lately.” … “Young talent is being pushed.
Young talent is being made from stars to superstars and what better
person to do that than Hulk Hogan. A lot of people thought he was going
to come in and try to still be Hulk Hogan, try to go in there and run
the show the way Hulk Hogan wanted to. Well, Hogan proved a lot of
people wrong. He’s in there pushing young talent.”

There is a story on TNA staffer Ross Foreman at
http://tinyurl.com/ydpxesz who ran the El Paso Marathon on Sunday in
honor of his late friend Tom Essex, a high school football coach, who
passed away last year.

Mick Foley, Colt Cabana and Bruce Prichard are doing stand-up during
Wrestlemania weekend on March 27 at the Gammage Auditorium at Arizona
State University.

Foley’s fourth memoir, Countdown to Lockdown, will be released on
October 1 from Grand Central Publishing. The synopsis reads: ‘The
fierce, fearless, and sometimes self-destructive man behind the personas
of Cactus Jack, Mankind, and Dude Love, Mick Foley remains the
undisputed literary king of the ring. In this mesmerizing memoir
(hand-written, no ghost writer), Foley chronicles the heart-pounding
buildup to his TNA debut, Lockdown, one of the most important matches of
his long and storied career. His every limit is tested as he comes out
of retirement and overcomes a host of injuries to get back in the ring
with one of his most formidable opponents. He also dishes previously
untold stories from his remarkable life, including his transition from
the WWE to TNA, his stint as a ringside announcer, his tumultuous
relationship with Vince McMahon, his thoughts and feelings on the use of
steroids in wrestling, the tragic story of Chris Benoit, and his
soul-saving charity work in Sierra Leone. Raw, frenetic, and
adrenaline-fuelled, Countdown to Lockdown charts Foley’s rebirth and
rise to heights that his fans thought he would never see again.’

Jeanie Clark Williams, the ex-wife of Steve Austin who once worked as
Lady Blossom in WCW, was scheduled this week to undergo a hip
replacement in England. She has suffered from osteoarthritis in her back
and hip for many years stemming from what she believes was a bad bump
during a wrestling match years ago. She is credited with helping Austin
develop his “Stone Cold” persona; While he was contemplating a change in
gimmick from “The Ringmaster,” in WWE she told him to drink his tea
before it got “stone cold,” inadvertently inspiring the nickname. She
has two daughter’s to Austin as well as another daughter to the late
Chris Adams who was legally adopted by Austin.

Rip Hawk (Harvey Evers), 88, who wrestled all over the world during five
decades, was reportedly hospitalized last week after he took a fall and
broke three ribs. He is also battling pneumonia. Hawk was best known for
teaming with Swede Hanson as the Blond Bombers, and he was also a booker
for Jim Crockett Promotions in the 1970s. A little known story is that
he was encouraged to wrestle professionally in the late 1940s by
legendary boxer Jack Dempsey. Another is that he’s the co-inventor of
microwave popcorn on the cob.

Orange County Weekly at http://tinyurl.com/ylbyavz has a story on
Matthew Castaneda, 33, an independent wrestler from Anaheim, CA, who is
accused of raping a 12-year-old girl. Castaneda, who wrestles as Chippy
Sanchez, reportedly first made contact with the girl on MySpace in
November 2009. They exchanged messages and eventually met near the girls
home in Santa Ana before taking a bus back to Anaheim. He took the girl
to a motel where the alleged rape took place. During this time the girls
parents had reported her missing. Castaneda left the motel soon
afterwards, and the girl wandered out of the room and flagged down a
traffic officer. With help from MySpace, Anaheim police soon identified
Castaneda and arrested him on suspicion of lewd and lascivious behavior
with a child under the age of 14. According to the OCDA, Casteneda was
on parole at the time of his arrest for a 2007 prior conviction for
felony domestic violence and violating a restraining order. He was
charged with two felony counts of lewd act on a child under 14 and
sentencing enhancement allegations for violating parole and sexual
conduct with a child. He is currently held without bail and faces a
maximum sentence of 11 years in state prison. Police believe there may
have been other young victims because the staff at the motel told them
Castaneda was a frequent guest.

Gail Gagne is scheduled to go to trial on July 12 relating to two counts
of third-degree criminal-sexual conduct. Gagne, 27, the granddaughter of
wrestling legend Verne Gagne, is accused of having sex with a then
16-year-old student during the summer of 2008 while working as a high
school substitute teacher and assistant basketball coach in St. Paul,
MN. Her attorney, Earl Grey, insists Gagne has done nothing wrong.

Jose Estrada, 28, an independent wrestler from the state of Nuevo León,
Mexico, is currently in custody facing the equivalent of a first-degree
murder charge in connection with the death of Jerome Angel Urbina
Gutierrez, 59, a wrestling fan, who was found wrapped in a blanket the
apparent the victim of a knife attack. It’s believed the murder took
place on February 20 following a wrestling show in Monterrey. Estrada,
who wrestles as Black Diamond, had kissed a valet working the same show.
The valet was Gutierrez’ boyfriend. Local newspaper reports speculate
that Gutierrez went after Estrada and there was a fight that had deadly
consequences.

The U.S. Supreme Court this week ruled against Hustler magazine over
it’s attempt to throw out a lawsuit filed against them by the estate of
Nancy Benoit. The magazine had published nude photos of Nancy after she
and her son Daniel were murdered by Chris Benoit. The photos were taken
more than 20 years ago. It’s claimed that Nancy never gave her
permission for the photos to be published and had asked the photographer
to destroy the images immediately after they were shot. A federal judge
initially ruled in the magazine’s favour in October 2008, dismissing the
lawsuit and concluding that the magazine had the right to publish the
photos because her death was of public interest. Last year, the U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta reversed the judge’s ruling, saying
the magazine had no right to publish the photos.

http://tinyurl.com/yjlzh2f. He talks about staying healthy and wrestling
the late Owen Hart and Brian Pillman many years ago in Calgary. “This is
the most important thing, to keep in good condition,” he says. “I train
every day and keep in good condition and after go to the ring for a good
fight. I have no idea after I am finished wrestling. Right now I fight
in the ring and will continue for a long long time.”

WRESTLING GLOBE MAILBAG

The following is a rebuttal from Jim Cornette to recent comments made by
Eric Bischoff about the possibility of Cornette retuning to work for
TNA:

Just read Bischoff’s comments. I would like to respond: Eric got a
little wordy. I’ll keep it simple–that horse has left the barn, Cowboy.
They’re not going to ask me to work for them, I wouldn’t accept if they
did, and at only 48 I am not old enough to be an asset IN TODAY’S TNA
MARKET. I am too busy helping the future of wrestling, ROH, to worry
about the seniors tour with the same tired old sports entertainment BS.
I also don’t work for people that lied TO me or ABOUT me, and TNA fits
both categories. Glad to know Russo feels as I do, since his new book
quotes him as saying having Hogan wrestle Flair just for ratings was
“desperate”–IN WCW IN 1999, ELEVEN YEARS AGO. They all deserve each
other. I wouldn’t believe a word anyone in power in TNA says if their
tongues were notarized.

JC

MA: To add some context, Cornette is referring to page 32 of Vince
Russo’s new book. Here is an excerpt: “A few weeks prior to signing with
WCW, I witnessed Hogan wrestle Flair on Nitro. Now strictly from a fan
perspective, it was very hard to watch. What I witnessed that night was
two legends that were shells of their former selves still trying to do
it. Watching Hogan and Flair that night just wasn’t right. In my opinion
the bookers were just exploiting them to try and pop a number. It was a
desperate situation and that’s exactly the way it came across on TV.”
