  3. The Armpit Wrestling Quiz for the Week of February 13, 2017

Welcome to The Armpit wrestling quiz for the week of February 13, 2017.

This past weekend was the annual Elimination Chamber event. For longtime fans, the Elimination Chamber first brings to mind similar matches of the past, such as the horrid Chamber of Horrors match from Halloween Havoc over 25 years ago. And who can forget the classic NWA WarGames battles, or even the Thunderdome and Tower of Doom. As such, the theme of this week’s quiz is “Specialty Cage Matches.”

Congratulations to last week’s winner: Josh Dionio

Last week’s answers:

1) AJ Styles wrestled for the WWF, WCW, TNA, XWF, and ROH.  But he never wrestled for any incarnation of ECW.

2) AJ was the first every TNA X Division champion.

3) The special referee for AJ’s match with CM Punk at ROH At Our Best was Rick Steamboat.

4) The famous ***** match at TNA Unbreakable in 2005 was AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe.

5) In 2014, British wrestler Lionheart unfortunately broke his neck when he took a Styles Clash incorrectly.

6) AJ won the IWGP Heavyweight title twice, once from Hiroshi Tanahashi and once from Kazuchika Okada.

7) At the Royal Rumble in 2016, AJ debuted and drew #3.

8) Chris Jericho and AJ called themselves Y2AJ.

9) AJ turned heel after WrestleMania and aligned himself with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson.

10) AJ was the WWE title in September by defeating Dean Ambrose.

This week’s questions:

  1. WarGames was one of Dusty Rhodes’s greatest creations. Two rings surrounded by a giant cage, and one by one team members would enter the ring until it was 5 on 5. It started in 1987 as a house show tour, but obviously wasn’t on every show because of the physical demands of the match.  Dubbed “The Match Beyond,” the first WarGames matches took place on which 1987 tour?

  1. a) Starrcade
  2. b) Great American Bash
  3. c) Bunkhouse Stampede
  4. d) Clash of the Champions

  1. WarGames continued in 1988, but a different cage match was held on the Great American Bash PPV that year. It was called the Tower of Doom, with three levels, and the structure made the match very limiting in terms of what the wrestlers could do. The goal was to obtain the key, which was held by whom?

  1. a) JJ Dillon
  2. b) Missy Hyatt
  3. c) Baby Doll
  4. d) Precious

  1. The first WarGames to be held on PPV was on the 1989 Great American Bash, one of the all-time great shows in modern history. They skipped 1990, and in 1991 it was the main event of WCW WrestleWar (another one of the all-time great PPVs). The 1991 WrestleWar was very famous, both for being a great match and also because one of WCW’s top stars was legitimately injured.  Who was injured in that match?

  1. a) Brian Pillman
  2. b) Sid Vicious
  3. c) Arn Anderson
  4. d) Rick Steiner

  1. My favorite WarGames was probably the 1992 version, at WrestleWar. It was a ***** match, highlighted by a star-studded Dangerous Alliance (Austin, Rude, Eaton, Arn, Zbysko) on one side. Sting led the babyface side, but the big question was the tension he had with one of his teammates, and how they’d get along in the match.  When this person entered the ring, he high-fived Sting for one of the biggest pops on the show.  Who was this man?

  1. a) Rick Steamboat
  2. b) Barry Windham
  3. c) Lex Luger
  4. d) Nikita Koloff

  1. After 1992, the WarGames became an annual event on PPV. Unfortunately the matches were largely forgettable. On which annual PPV were the later WarGames held?

  1. a) Great American Bash
  2. b) Fall Brawl
  3. c) Starrcade
  4. d) Uncensored
  5. e) Slamboree
  6. f) SuperBrawl

  1. Halloween Havoc ’89 was headlined by a specialty cage match called Thunderdome. So many legends in that ring, including Ric Flair, Sting, Terry Funk, Ole Anderson, Great Muta, and Terry Funk. But the match was held in Philadelphia, and before that city became synonymous with Terry Funk in ECW, it was the old stomping grounds of the special referee in this match.  Aside from Flair, he was the most legendary person on the card that night.  Who was it?

  1. a) The Crusher
  2. b) Pedro Morales
  3. c) Bruno Sammartino
  4. d) Bob Backlund

  1. Two years later, it wasn’t the Thunderdome, but the Chamber of Horrors at Halloween Havoc ’91. The less said about this match, the better. It’s only notable for what became known as “wrestling’s most famous electrocution.”  Who got fried that night?

  1. a) Abdullah the Butcher
  2. b) Cactus Jack
  3. c) Van Hammer
  4. d) Diamond Studd (Scott Hall)

  1. Thunderdome made one last appearance, but was called Thundercage, at the final WCW show under Bill Watts. It was also the final show called by Jim Ross, and the first WCW singles match by Chris Benoit (he had already wrestled for them as a tag team). The match wasn’t very memorable except for one thing: the long-awaited babyface turn by what cult favorite WCW wrestler?

  1. a) Big Van Vader
  2. b) 2 Cold Scorpio
  3. c) Vinnie Vegas (Kevin Nash)
  4. d) Cactus Jack

  1. The Elimination Chamber is now an annual WWE event. It started all the way back in 2002, and in storyline, which authority figure created the match?

  1. a) Vince McMahon
  2. b) Stephanie McMahon
  3. c) Eric Bischoff
  4. d) Shane McMahon

  1. Finally, we can’t have a quiz on cage matches without mentioning Hell in a Cell. Jim Cornette claims he came up with the idea, while his arch nemesis Vince Russo claims he came up with the name. While everyone remembers Undertaker vs Mankind as the most famous Hell in a Cell (in 1998), it was not the first.  That’s because the first, at Badd Blood 1997, was overshadowed by the unfortunate and tragic death of Brian Pillman before the show.  This first Hell in a Cell involved the Undertaker as well; whom did he wrestle?

  1. a) Kane
  2. b) Shawn Michaels
  3. c) Steve Austin
  4. d) Bret Hart
