Samoa Joe trained at the UIWA West Coast Dojo by Johnny Hemp, Cincinnati Red, and occasionally John Delayo.
Samoa Joe had his first match against veteran masked wrestler Uncle Jess Hansen three months after beginning training.
Samoa Joe wrestled Cincinnati Red VERY regularly on the independent circuit before getting hired by UPW.
