Rob Freeman wrote: On the ‘In The Beginning’ section, it states: “Darren Mathews performed under his real name for 2 years before adopting the name, Steven Regal..”. In fact in his first ever TV match (in the UK on the Wrestling segment of ITV’s World Of Sport program) he made his debut as Roy Regal, against his trainer Marty Jones.
David (from Wednesbury, near Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, West Midlands) wrote: Hi I read you Regal Bio, and with the release of his biography, has cleared. many a argument over the years on various Forums etc, about Regal. What I mean is I was told 5 years or so ago, by one of my best friends, that his Granddad who lives in same Street as me just 15 doors down. Grew up and knew Regals Dad, my friend said he grew up with him, near a Town 3 miles from me called Willenhal Near Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. He said later he moved to Codsall just 5 miles north, of Wolverhampton where he had a son, Darren Mathews. So my Friend told me Regals Dad grew up in Willenhall, Regal was really called Darren and lived outside Wolverhampton near Codsal. I was always called a liar and I sometimes doubted my friend, as many sites said Regal was Born 1965 Darren Mathews in Blackpool, many Top site webmasters said that was the case, funny how he does not have a Blackpool/Lancashire Accent, but puts on a Commonly used when portraying Englishmen in Film old British Accent, but you can still make out a Black Country/Midlands Accent in him. After his release of his Biography Confirms he is indeed from the West Midlands Near Codsall, my friend was right all along. Any way just wanted to add that he recently said that his Granddad said Regal Started Wrestling at Willenhall Baths and also Venus in Wolverhampton such as Civic hall, at 15-16 yrs age, he was a huge Big Daddy Fan, and his reason for going to Blackpool was that was where Wrestling was big in England, you wanted back then to become a Success in Wrestling, then all the big names and promoters where in Blackpool. Just like in the 70s and 80s if you was in the US you would go south to the southern Territories to get work. Just thought I would pass that on in case you never knew that. The only 100% way to confirm this would be to ask Regal to Break Fabe and ask him the truth. As his Career Story was he was brought up on the rough back Streets of Blackpool, which was not the case, mind you the £10 a night Back Street B&B’s in Blackpool could be classed as rough accommodation lol.
